For me my MMO excitement is at its lowest in 10 years. Though I'm cautiously looking forward to Elder Scrolls Online and looking forward to trying Wildstar despite the artistry and cartoony humor I wasn't looking for in an MMO, I'm no longer going crazy waiting for open beta like I used to. I can now patiently wait for gameplay videos to be released and after TOR (though a solid game) I doubt I will ever get a special edition pre-release again.

The PS4 and Xbox One info is finally trickling in, but with the Powerful PC I already have and can obtain at will, a more advanced TV Hub isn't that exciting to me either.

The only thing I'm very excited about is Occulus Rift. If they really do this right and with the technology that is now available, this has the potential to be more than a novelty like 3D gaming was for PCs. Can you imagine playing Skyrim in a virtual reality setting? Or an online sports game? Maybe a few years from now we will even see an good MMO in a virtual reality setting. Or travel around the world without leaving our homes (just don't forget to exercise :-) lol. I really am excited about the 'potential' this has for so many forms of gaming and so far everything I read, people that get lucky enough to try are being amazed.

What are you most excited about and why?

Not to thrilled about wearing a huge piece of hardware on my head.  I have TRACKIR head tracking and love it with my simulators.  Clips on to your headset and is very small.  Granted, I dont have 3D, but I dont care.

I'm actually worried about the effects such a thing will have on people's eyes over long term use. Is there any information on that?
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

Yea I agree about the size of it, but this is the alpha developer version including the current resolution. One would hope that the consumer version will be pretty light in comparison I hope :-)

No not yet. I think that study will come out after the one where they find out that eating chocolate instead of vegetables is actually good for you :-) lol.

Because the thread led me to, I of course chose the Occulus Rift.

I'm not especially looking forward to any upcoming MMO because I'm happy with the MMO I'm currently playing.  I didn't buy any of the previous generation's consoles (I still use my PS2 as a supplement to my PC), and I'm not looking forward to any of the future consoles.  Like seriously couldn't care less.  I'll definitely enjoy my next PC upgrade, but that's on the distant horizon, and I'm content with my current PC right now.  So that just leaves the thread's primary choice: the Occulus Rift, which actually has the potential to be a revolutionary addition to the gaming world - and an affordable one at that.  I've been intrigued since I saw a demo of it on Jimmy Fallon.

Combine the Rift with the Virtuix Omni Treadmill (and possibly other hardware like Razor's Hydra) or a Kinetic (which is coming to the PC) and you can get a very good affordable VR experience and a nice workout.  The potential in Simulators and FP Horror games is especially nice, but it could potentially be a decent experience in any First Person style game.  Here's a video of TF2 using the Rift + Omni.  This could very well be the future of gaming if this hardware starts to sell well.

Somebody, somewhere has better skills as you have, more experience as you have, is smarter than you, has more friends as you do and can stay online longer. Just pray he's not out to get you.

I'm by no means an expert on the subject, but I remember asking my optometrist if frequently having my eyes close to screens caused my vision to be bad, and the optometrist told me that things like staring to close to a television and computer screen is a myth and does not cause permanent damage to the eyes.  On the other hand doing quick research does indicate that other effects from staring too long at a screen such as inadequate lightning could cause harm to the eyes such as strain.  (Source:  http://www.pasadenaeye.com/faq/faq08/faq08_text.html).  I would assume the Oculus Rift is setup in such a way that there shouldn't be any long term harm to the eyes.

It will give you serious motion sickness if you are prone to that, especially if you didn't calibrate the Rift to your vision.  I've seen several early impressions of the Rift that mentioned that, even to some people who don't normally get motion sickness from playing games.

@Mibbs comparing it to the Virtual Boy wouldn't be accurate as the Rift displays things at a much higher resolution and with significantly more color so it should feel more natural to the eyes and cause less strain I would assume.  Using the Virtual Boy for a few minutes could cause eye strain, but I haven't heard any reports of eye strain caused by the Rift yet and several people have used it for long periods of time.

I'm similar to you, but I'm not playing any MMO right now. I'm still playing Skyrim and want to dive into Witcher 2 next :-).

Personally I wear glasses and I don't know how good or bad the quality of the Oculus Rift is. I'm also curious if they've done any long term tests with it for eye strain. To me it seems as though the Oculus Rift is exactly like the Virtual Boy from Nintendo back in the day. Which use to cause severe eye strain on the person playing with it.

In the little I've researched this I know this is a primary concern of theirs and they are ensuring that prescriptions won't be in issue. Whether that really happens is another story :-). I think this is more game changing than normal 3D which had been around since the 70s with red and blue glasses. I'm not sure how people might feel that being completely enveloped in the fantasy world you are in wouldn't be special, but I guess to each his own :-).

Then you're where I was a little over a year ago, before GW2 went into its first beta.  I hadn't really played any MMO since wotlk WoW, and was really enjoying a bunch of single player RPGs, including both of those games you mentioned :)  I do need to go back through Witcher 2 before the 3rd one comes out, and I've been meaning to get back into Skyrim, but every time I do, I get lost in browsing mods for 2-3 hours and get tired before I ever actually log into the game lol.

I agree, Occulus Rift looks very promising, if it delivers i am sure that it will bring a fantastic experience in certain game genres.

LOL, thats so funny. I have done EXACTLY the same thing. Sometimes I go crazy with the Mods, only to uninstall them, and then find out I havent even played Skyrim that day lol. Thats funny. yea I was thinking the same thing about Witcher 2 prior to Witcher 3 :-), especially now that for those like me who haven't played it, they made it more newbie friendly :-).

I am most excited about the upcoming Steam Box from Valve software as it fills the needs of a game player with just the right functionality options, easy upgradability, cheaper and more accessible games, includes streaming and is portable, better than ANY of the next generation all in one entertainment center consoles. A shame you left it out of the poll.

I am a mixed on Occulus in that its a big honking blindfold thing attached with wires to my PC in a modern world that puts enough demands on my time that pauses are likely. Heck man, my cat might even ninja me while using that thing. I am reminded of what happened with joysticks in that its a nifty sounding extra I don’t “really” need. If the thing was a self contained portable gaming unit with wireless I might be more for it.

    Funny you should post that.

Just today they posted on youtube a short video of the Omni, Rift, and the Hydra. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvODo6E8B30

They're also shooting for a kickstarter on June 4th of this year.
