My son was banned for 3 to 4 days this Friday. The GM accused my son of using a hack. One thing I cannot stand is a cheater on a MMO or a multiplayer game, they are below navel lint. My son knows this and would never do it, much less know how (only 11).
First my son tells me that he is banned. I look at his email and sure enough, there was a email from SOE. Before I wrote the support I done a scan, nothing.
My son swears up and down that he never even done it. I believe him without question. So he is banned for 3-4 days, without him doing anything.
I am only putting this here as a warning to you guys. I know some of you may be skeptical (hell I would too). But we as a family are getting rid of our SOE accounts. For a company to do this and show no proof or even say what he was doing, is a company I will not support any longer. We both were subs...........

Before you write them off you should ask for some kind of proof, or verification, not so much to prove they're wrong/right, but to verify that your son didn't possibly put something on the computer that enabled someone else to either tunnel through your ip, or keylogged his user-name and password.
Your best bet is to present the question to them in a manner of a fact-finding father wanting to ensure his son is safe in his surfing, and playing, instead of from a "screw you for accusing my son of cheating when I know he didn't do anything, now give me proof or we quit". That latter choice will get you nowhere, but you may actually get somewhere with the first option. Give it a shot, and good luck.

As mentioned before, inquire to see if they can give you more information.
If it was a false positive, hopefully any additional information may help you get rid of any potential software that would be causing it.
Second, kids are pretty savy these days. It is possible your son intentionally or even unintentionally installed a hack.
This seems like the soundest approach to take at this point.
I hope you don't take such an oblivious approach to all your parenting methods.
I was using Netbus to hack friends computers and cheating all over the place in Counter Strike when I was 10, and that was 15 years ago, when technology was far less accessible to 10 year olds than it is today, before you could type the question into Google for your answer.
I had also discovered online porn and how to hide my access from my parents, how to cheat on homework, and chat rooms via the internet by that age. Just because he is a good kid, doesn't mean he isn't impervious to the temptations around him, especially considering how easy they are to obtain.
This.
You were someone on a computer. My son plays football, Xbox, takes guitar lessons (why I have no idea). But he or his friends have no clue about computers, none. I understand being skeptical, i really do.
It doesn't matter anymore. He is pissed because I view it like the company called him a cheater. So he isn't going to play anymore and neither am I (SOE games). My intent was not sympathy or a SOE bash. Just watch out, simple enough. There are many good MMOs out there to take this kind of crap, imo. I will call them Tuesday to file a complaint if it helps or not, I have no idea!
As did I, but your entire post is about him being banned from an MMORPG that he's presumably playing on what? The same computer you're claiming he knows nothing about? If he posses the skill to understand an MMO and what it entails, and has any remote amount of social ability, he already knows more than enough of this mystical computer you speak of.
Here I'll help you.
Your son is most likely a cheater and a liar. As a parent of 2 children myself I understand that you "want" to believe that your kid would never lie or cheat. Take this as a reality check and realize that your children aren't perfect and they do the same shit that we did as kids.
Don't take this as anything personal kids will be kids. Or are we still going to keep believing that the boogey man that is SOE is targeting you child out of spite?
Also, if this is the same son from this post.

I really question your parenting abilities considering this is from 2007, putting your son at 5 years old.
While that stinks if it's true. I wouldn't be so quick to write them off. What are you suggesting happened? They just targeted your son for no reason? Obviously something happened, maybe it was a mistake. But it's not like they are just going to try and make people quit.
Just seems a little harsh to me. I would give them a chance to make it right or investigate further. I know when I was that age "I never did it I swear" was my default answer whenever the letter from school came home.
That was the first thought i had.I can tell you this,i been around SOE since it was actually a great developer/publisher back in EQ1.I have never seen SOE wrongly accuse i actually fidn their support staff to be the best in gaming that an fact i don't much like SOE anymore.
The whole thing just sounds off,i have never seen any phising emails either and yet i have had one from WOW.
Honestly aside from SOE's shotty cash shop ideas, there has been nothing shady about their operation.
I am trying to figure just HOW ,it could happen as mentioned i sort of write off Phising. It is possible junior was surfing some shady site i really don't know as you said you searched for a virus.
I know first hand a 10 year old is smart enough to use all those torrent sites and d/l bad crap but i don't consider them smart enough to know how to totally erase it.
Point is ,you can do a search of past history from the browser. That narrows down possibilities right there. Then if something looks shady on your side, you can check using the simple search in the run box for anything related to those sites he was visiting.
I think anyone that knows me,knows i am skeptical first and trust nobody but i will have to say,i do not think SOE is guilty of any wrong doing, you just need to figure out what happened.Like Every support staff, there are some bad employees. It is possible a lazy one just summarized some other problem and labeled it as a hack or ban.My point is you did target SOE in general, yet i feel they have a very good support staff.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
why shouldnt kids play MMO's? majority of the ones out are 1000x less violent that every FPS out. taking advice from a fool is worse than believing that politicians tell the truth.
"Possibly we humans can exist without actually having to fight. But many of us have chosen to fight. For what reason? To protect something? Protect what? Ourselves? The future? If we kill people to protect ourselves and this future, then what sort of future is it, and what will we have become? There is no future for those who have died. And what of those who did the killing? Is happiness to be found in a future that is grasped with blood stained hands? Is that the truth?"
If your son has been playing MMO's since he was 5 then I'd bet my not-insignificant paycheck that he knows more than enough about how to download, install, and hide hacks. Heck I'd be willing to bet he knows more about computers than you do. I'd also be willing to bet that he wouldn't be above lying about it.
Sorry to be so blunt, but this is an 11 year old that seems to have been caught doing something he shouldn't do. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck... chances are it's a duck, not a goose.
I think you underestimate how tech savvy todays youth are. I am turning 30 this year and I was modifying game data on my computer at the age of 10. Kids today are even more advanced. Also most 'hacks' are a simple download these days. There are easy to follow steps plastered all over the internet.
OP - your kid might be telling the truth, I guess you will find out now that you have taken the game away from him for good. Seems like decent enough punishment if he really did do it, or punishment to SoE if he didn't. But I would take anything a kid says with a grain of salt. I know how much I lied at that age to my parents. Parents never want to believe the worst of their kids.
there is no "club of gamers banned for no reason" its only the "club of gamers banned for cheating but in denial".
you know what you did, you knew it was wrong, you got caught, suck it up and take your punishment. standing somewhere the enemy cant get to you too retaliate isnt good gameplay, its an exploit, just becuase that map has faulty pathing doesnt mean you are magically allowed to exploit it. dupeing your items and money because of a bug is not okay, its against the eula.
your kid is a piece of sh*t, he deserves his ban.
