It is a good time for them to shine but who knows what we are even getting......I have heard Smed promote his games so many times then only to find out they are pure garbage (free realms anyone?).........I figure that EQN is going to fall short of expectations its just a matter of how short.

I agree. The only thing Smed has proven he can do with a "sandbox" is wreck it.
I have great hopes for EQ Next. The Forgelight engine seems to work pretty well in Planetside 2.
My greatest fear is also my greatest hope - The Smedley. He single-handedly crushed the life out of Star Wars Galaxies, one of the last sandboxes. He says he has learned his lesson, but who knows? It could be a trick or just P.R.
Can we really trust the man? I think most SWG veterans want to see proof first of what is intended for EQ Next.
While NGE was easily the single greatest poor decision for a live MMO in the genres history, Smedley wasn't solely responsible nor was it his idea for the change. It's well documented. He as the leader of SoE had his part to play but Lucasarts bears the brunt of it, if you read what actually happened and why. He's been the fall guy as he's the public face of the publisher/developer and that's what people have continued to hold on to.
That said, everyone should be very cautious. While SoE has done some things right in the past, unfortunately the business of MMOs casts a wide and sinister net on what we usually consider a good game. It's also a very cutthroat business these days unlike in the past with EQ/WoW in their heyday.
They have a great IP in EQ with a huge fanbase and, unlike what happened with SWG, they're going to be solely responsible for how it turns out.
The internet is an amazing platform for some people to showcase their deficiencies as a person.
