I am an old school MMOer, (eq, daoc) So I have had my eye on this since the last November. But the reviews are just so out of wack, up and down, I dont know who to believe.
I can tolerate a lot of dated mechanics, because I have been there, but $40 bucks can feed me for a month, or get me to work for 3 weeks.. not something I want to blow on a shity game.
If they had a Trial i would be far more likely to drop money on it.
The way mmo's were: Community, Exploration, Character Development, Conquest.
The way mmo's are now : Cut-Scenes,Cut-Scenes, solo Questing, Cut-Scenes...
Just reading the list of features should tell you if this game is for you or not.
Beyond that, watch a few hours of youtube clips or check out some streamers on twitch.tv - a trial would be just enough time for you to wander out of the safezone unprepared and die a quick death. You either jump in for the long haul or stay away from Darkfall.
People should know enough by watching videos if Darkfall is for them.
The way Darkfall is designed, it does not lend itself well to trial accounts. Things AV would need to overcome by implementing a trial:
1) Free for all, full loot: I could make a trial account, and even if you restrict it so I cannot trade to my pay account, I would be able to kill the trial account person and take the regs. This effectively will eliminate the revenue AV gains from multiple accounts. For this reason alone, there should be no trial accounts.
2) Darkfall has one character per account. With a trial account, this would allow you to scout out an area with a naked character. You would also be able to make multiple trial accounts and park them beside a spawn to increase the spawn rate.
3) Universal banking: A trial account could harvest away and deposit stuff in clan bank. Refer to point 1.
The only way a trial would work in Darkfall is if AV created a trial world. There could be no interaction with paid accounts or the universal banking system. This would not be a good reflection of what Darkfall is, so what is the point?
So, just watch videos and make a decision. No skin off my back if a person will shy away because of no trial. Plenty of other game choices out there, although not many with Darkfalls feature set.

Do not allow trials to leave the safe zone. Do not allow them access to the clan bank.
Problems solved, you still get the chance to feel the game.

The problem is they could be use by farmers to farm materials in the safe zone.
There are too many problems with a free trial in Darkfall. Adding one would have a negative impact on the game. It was also redirect programming away from content to remake the game systems to include one.
Only developers confident in their product have free trials. Otherwise they lose alot of money from all the people that ignore reviews and buy a piles of crap because they were unable to test it first.

See something like this is all I would really need, I REALLY want to at least have a small feel for the game mechanics and systems before dropping money on it. I understand that I won't even be able to scratch the surface of what the games really about in a small weekend but I already understand how much fun that will probably be. I just need to get a feel for the game itself.

I can watch videos about darkfall all day. In fact I do watch alot of them because it really does seem like the kind of game that I would love to play.
I love the look of the combat being highly skill based, Requires pinpoint accuracy with other factors like gravity, Extended managing of stat pools, and MOST importantly NO ANIMATION LOCKS (which is the biggest reason I hate most MMO combat).
I love the systems in place like the full loot ffa, Constant sense of danger, A massively multiplay that encourages multiplaying (imagine that! Seriously why the hell are people so adamant on soloing in mmos?), The prowess system looks kind of amazing for very highly capped progression, The polotics naturally involved in games like this, and ofc the massive seige/clan warfare. It really sounds like everything that I REALLY want in an MMO.
The problem? So have so many other games... SO MANY other games which have just completely let me down and wasted money =/
If WoW was released today even in its' entirety it would be f2p in 3 months. Why is it still such a big deal?

Just buy it. If you wait for the free trial, you will regret all the time you lost.

Heh I actually came really close to giving in last night, out of the crazy curiousity I have for the game mostly. I went to their website fully intending to just say screw the haters and go for it but I guess the site was down for maintenence... I'm still not sure if I should be relieved or frustrated by it but it's still down =/ This isn't just me is it? Can anybody else access their site?

Does that include making an account and all that too? It's just the site that's been in maint for 2 days right? Not the game?

If you download the game you can click on account management in the launcher. It will take you to a page to set up the game.
Apparently the website is down to work on security.

Of course, you can walk out and get a refund if you realize you're watching a shitty movie.
