Oculus Rift engineer killed as gang members flee Santa Ana police

 

Andrew Scott Reisse, a computer graphics engineer and a co-founder of Oculus VR, the company behind the Oculus Rift VR headset, was killed in Santa Ana, California on Thursday, reports local ABC affiliate KABC. Reisse was traversing a crosswalk when he was struck by a car, a Dodge charger carrying suspects fleeing Santa Ana police.

 

Police reported that the car was driven by 21-year-old Victor Sanchez, who sped from the scene of an altercation in the 1000 block of Rosewood Court, along with two other suspects. The car had struck two vehicles and ran "several red lights," including the one near the crosswalk where Reisse was killed, according to Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.

 

In a statement issued by Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe and chief software architect Michael Antonov, the company said that the 33-year-old Reisse "was a brilliant computer graphics engineer, an avid photographer and hiker who loved nature, a true loyal friend, and a founding member of our close-knit Oculus family."

 

It goes on to say that "Andrew's contributions span far and wide in the video game industry. His code is embedded in thousands of games played by millions of people around the world," and "Words can not express how sorely he will be missed or how deeply our sympathy runs for his family."

That really sucks.  I've been following Oculus closely, and I'm sorry this tragedy happened.  What strikes me is that here was a pedestrian who was in no way endangering anyone else, struck by a car fleeing the police.  This is a reminder to me to be really, really careful driving, and that I never can be absolutely sure when it will be my time to go as well.

It's not really a reminder to be careful while driving. The guy was hit by a speeding car that was fleeing from police as he walked on a crosswalk.

If anything, it's a reminder to not let your guard down and always be cautious and observant of your surroundings to try and avoid problems, but even then, not everything is avoidable, or even able to be seen. 

Sure hope the guy that killed him gets what's coming to him.

I've always questioned the perceived necessity for police to risk the public's safety with high speed chases.

Such a tragedy, compounded by the fact that the man who murdered Mr. Reisse, Victor Sanchez, already had a long history of violence and crime according to published reports.  But that is what you get with a revolving door prison system and a slap on the wrist justice system.  Innocent people murdered every day.  Now this killer will be slowly processed through the court system, get  free room, board, health care, cable, etc. for a few years, and be back out on the street.

It also goes to show that police chances in busy areas are just stupid. People get hurt or killed all the time. Many police forces around the world have just accepted the fact that when someone is willing to kill as many people as necessary to get away it's safer for the innocent people around to just let them go and catch them later. It's not like these gamg members are totally unknown to them.

Like you said even if they catch the guy he'll be out on the streets in a few years..at most. The dead are gone forever.

Sad news indeed and a very bad luck in being at the wrong place in the wrong time.

Sincere condolences to the family.

As for the criminal, Sanchez, i believe a death penalty would be in order, no sense in wasting taxpayers money by keeping this violent scum in prison and feeding him.

but we both know already he'll get a great tax paid lawyer who helps to spin the story, making him the poor victim of society.

He'll probably get a third or fourth chance to run over another person in the next car chase.
