I wonder if F2P will make this game blossom further or piss a lot of the player base off via cash shop. I can't help but wonder this because I rather pay the 15 dollars and be on par with everyone else then have to pay more than that just to be on the same level with those who use the cash shop.

Im betting that is going to piss a lot of people off, when instead of grinding heroics they just need a credit card to be raid ready.

You obviously don't understand their cash shop. You won't be able to buy raid gear for real money... Quoted from their site : "Important:
RIFT will not become "pay-to-win" with this change. The best items in the game will always have to be earned in Telara!"

So do some research next time instead of spreading false information..

He didn't say the best gear in the game would be purchasable, he said raid ready gear, aka dungeon gear, will be available and he is correct. It's a valid complaint considering most respected F2P and B2P titles, whether conversion or originally using that model, don't let you buy gear at all.

Inb4 people quit the game out of boredom and a lack of content to do because they skipped it all two months down the line. It's going to be like TERA when it went F2P.

Ah, it says medium. It says high.  Now it says medium again.  Yes!  Clearly THAT is proof positive that the game has a healthy population.

I remember back in the day with original Everquest they would actually put up the numbers of the people on the server at that specific time.  Each server was about 1500-2500 people primetime, and there were a lot of servers.

Something tells me that what Trion considers "medium" or "high" is probably pretty low in actual numbers.

Didn't Rift already go F2P a while ago?

I just lost my founder's pricing, canceled my subscription, runs out in 13 days.  There's a few of my friends that are leaving as well, we just can't stand the negatives that come with F2P.  I would rather pay $50 a month than have to put up with the F2P crowd, nickel and diming, and many other probelms with EVERY F2P game.

I played Lotro since it was in beta, until they went F2P.  I just couldn't get back into it.  They don't enforce RP anymore on RP servers. I can't count the number of kids that flooded the game after it went F2P.  I still log in to go to concerts and RP from time to time, but F2P ruined lotro, just like it does to every game.

The longest I've ever played a F2P game was Neverwinter.  I played it from beta until about a week ago...they just don't have the staying power that P2P does.  Part of it might be with P2P I'm obligated to log in and "get my money's worth", but I like being static with one game for a very long time.

I'll be going back to WoW, it seems like it's the last bastion of P2P in the world.  I'm not saying I love or hate WoW, but it's a decent enough game, and it's P2P, which is the only thing I'll play.

Things the internet has brought us: People dramatically quitting something, and then hanging around to see what kind of response their quitting gets.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

eh, the servers are busy enough Im sure.  The OP's post was during a free to play weekend and rift will get a nice initial surge. Smartest thing Trion has done since Rift's launch was close servers like crazy.  When your servers are busy people are much more likely stick around even if the population is low overall.  Companies need to realize the publicity hit for closing servers as nowhere near as bad as the publicity hit for dead servers.

6 months from now will be the test for Rift.  Its getting its first real patch since november and going f2p.  In 6 months we will see how many people stick around and if the 7 months between real updates was a fluke due to the f2p conversion or the new norm.

I dont think in general the f2pers are the raider types though.   Thats one area of the population that shouldnt expect a rise from f2p, because the people dedicated enough to raid typically have no issues playing a sub since they are playing 10+ hours a week as it is.

if Swtor grabbed a lot of players with its garbage f2p model, Rift will have even more people with its cash shop that so far looks way better than swtor's. I have no doubts about that. Of course we will see when it goes f2p and we see the full shop. Just like Tera did, virtually no limitations + extra stuff to subbers = servers packed.

I'll be one of the people to try this out.
I played in closed beta and it wasn't bad but not really what I wanted at the time.
I am always willing to play F2P games and give them a shot.
From what I hear, a lot has been released and changed since I tried this some summers ago. Excited to see what it has to offer.
