After WOW which MMO's you regret and not regret spending $ on?

After WOW changed the genre and assuming most here "tried/played it" (don't bother adding it to regret/not regret, and save some space ;)

Regret spending $ on:

It was worth it for:

Still playing it?

Playing anything else now?

If so until when?

Regret spending $ on: Aion (box + 3 month of sub), Dead Frontier($20), Battle of Immortals ($20), EVE($20 to get the game and give it a try)

It was worth it for: DCUO ($35 for box with promo and 30 free days and 90 more days for $10 a month)

Still playing it? No

Playing anything else now? Plan to play Path of Exile Onslaught League in couple days (if that disappoints me, stick to single players and other activities) Last case scenario kill time with Rift or burn the SWTOR content.

If so until when? Until I get positive feed back on either Wildstar, Everquest Next or ArcheAge (possibly FFXIV and Elder Scroll, but I highly doubt they will do great)____________________________________________________________________________________

    I regret spending on -

    swtor

    gw2

    RIFT expansion

    Best money I've spent -

9$ for 4 months of Wushu.

    Why restrict it "after WoW"?

Regret spending $ on: Vanguard; Saga of Heroes - Very dull, unoriginal, grindy, had a lot of timesinks and buggy even after the fans hailed "this is how it should've been launched".

It was worth it for: Warhammer Online (the first month after launch was fun - not worth subscribing to tho), Guild Wars (best bang for you buck in the whole genre)

    Still playing it? No.

Playing anything else now? Eve Online, but I don't exactly pay for it - wouldn't if I had to.

If so until when? I don't know. Boredom is imminent tho. I am ready pick up any half-decent title at this point.

    No Regrets:

The best themepark since WoW, IMO, is LOTRO, and it's still a great game today if you pay for VIP and don't have to bother with the F2P system. It still has heart, which so many other MMOs lack.

After that I would say The Secret World, even though it's a dungeon-centric design after you get past the first zone.  Still very original, atmospheric and fun for a while.  Could have been so much more, but still stands out for me as one of the most original MMOs.

Original Guild Wars: Felt so much more rich to me than GW2 does.  More mysterious and atmospheric back then, and a lot more heart.  I don't care what anyone says it was a better game.  Still might be today.

    Regrets:

    Pretty much everything else.

A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

Honestly, the only mmos I've purchased since I started playing WoW was LotRO, DCUO and GW2. Everything else I was able to get into closed beta phases, or checked them out during open beta, or went and played after they went F2P. I can't say I regret any of my purchases. I got about 2 months of fun out of LotRO, but found that I didn't enjoy the game as well as WoW, so I went back. I still play DCUO off and on, and I play GW2 every chance I get.

Can't really say in all my years of mmos that I regret spending any money on any of them. I had various levels of fun with all the games I have played.

Regret spending $ on: Nothing, I know how to properly research purchases

It was worth it for: Not enough space, but: Borderlands 2 (can't believe I didn't pre-order the chest image)

Still playing it? No, I'm posting on teh boardz

Playing anything else now? STO and several tabletops

    If so until when? Death?

I love the monthly "regret" threads.

After wow, (which I dont regret spending money on at all) I did purchase some dodgy ones. Fx, I regret purchasing Aion and Lotro, also DDO, WAR, RIFT and SWTOR.

I regret NOT purchasing and playing SWG from launch (I played from just prior to Kashyyk, which made it a very confusing experience early on, but I stuck with it for years) - And I regret NOT purchasing and playing Secret World, most recently. I actually think it is a great game I just cant seem to get the energy to start now. I would also have liked to play the first final fantasy online game, as I believe it would have been an experience like EQ1 was in many ways (I played EQ from 1999 untill WoW) Too late to try now though.

Games Im sorta on the fence about are; Age of Conan, L2, EQ2 Tera and Guildwars 2 - I purchased and played them, but I really didnt find them to be anything but meh.

The games Im most happy about having played are: EQ1, WOW and EVE.

Games I would never touch with a seven foot pole are Defiance, Neverwinter and almost all the socalled mmo's that come out f2p with cashshops the past 2-3 yrs.

  • FearumFearum Member UncommonPosts: 1,175

I regret spending money on GW2, Age of Wushu for the vip beta access even though it was only 15 or 20 dollars, Warhammer that game was crap and couldn't even squeeze out the first free month and LOtRO bought this the day it went live and wasn't really too thrilled with the game and really couldn't play through the whole free first month.

I don't regret subbing to rift for 6 months, that game was fun for the time I was playing it but it got old. Playing Darkfall UW right now and don't regret it either, not sure how long I will be playing but still enjoying it. Played DCUniverse on my PS3 and had fun for a few months but it got stale pretty quick, but I don't regret subbing for those few months.

PS, I agree with the poster above me about not touching F2P games with any foot pole.

    Regret spending $ on:

EVE (PvE is amazing (even if most say its PvP, it has best PvE system in any sandbox game that usually rely on cloned deathmatch fps call of duty style games). But I like X3 Terran Conflict a lot more. A huge pet peeve are the tiny planets in EVE...annoyed me far too much. Even if it may be a minor thing to most, that is what I stare at most in a space game)

GW2 (fun for two weeks...barely touch it. I prefer the trinity)

Defiance (fun for a few days...wtf is this shit)

AoC (if the whole game was like Tortage, I'd still be playing it to this day. Tortage was only good part of the game)

Darkfall (got it cause a friend said it was amazing and I'd love it. Was like a call of duty deathmatch server...so I stopped playing. Community sucked as well, it was exactly like the CoD community)

    Regret NOT spending $ on:

RIFT (I'm playing it now that its free to play (well got 30 days free from Raptr)...I played before, but just never spent money. I like it far more than GW2 which is sorta similar. And I like the trinity system and class system of Rift. Plus I far enjoy the events in RIFT than GW2)

SWTOR (I would have pay to played this, got 300 hours doing various class stories...far worth the time.)

    It was worth it for:

RIFT (the events, overall good community, class system)

SWTOR (best stories of any MMO)

    Still playing it?

    RIFT (yup :D)

SWTOR (endgame sucks, but got far my time worth doing all the story quests. But I ran out of class stories I was interested in and stopped. Disappointed that they went to the typical endgame MMO)

    Playing anything else now?

RIFT and some singleplayer games (Don't Starve, Just Cause 2, X3 Terran Conflict, Civ 4 and 5, Medieval 2 with Third Age mod)

    If so until when?

RIFT is free for as long as it remains open :D

Never did one of these before, I will give it a shot.

Regret spending $ on: I honestly think the only game I truly regretted purchasing was FFXIV. I didn't have a gamepad at first and the interface was horrible. I never played a game that felt like it was fighting to get me to not play it the entire time.

It was worth it for: Pretty much all the others. The top three I have gotten the most hours out of are (In order of longest to shortest): EVE (The amount of time is subscribed, not actually played), Lord of the Rings Online, and The Secret World.

Still playing it? Still playing The Secret World about once a week, haven't played the others in a while. I will be checking out Lord of the Rings after the class changes I think. I doubt I will go back to any (Not just to the ones I listed here) of the others.

Playing anything else now? Neverwinter. It's a great game for bite-sized gaming. The PVP makes me laugh like an evil wizard (Which is fortunate since I play a control wizard).

If so until when? Until I get bored of it.

Not regret : Spending money on pre-f2p Lotro.

Not regret: some time & money on old like around ~2006 EvE Online.

Regret: spending time on f2p Lotro, until I left. , buying GW2 , TSW, and few others.

Regret: spending time and effort on downloading, trying and researching any f2p mmorpg retail or beta I've played.

i do not regret swtor or gw2 they were worth the initial price in terms of playtime and fun. They grew old quick so i stopped subbing/playing

the only regret i have ever had buying a game was ff14 ....... and apb. I mean they shut them off for god's sake. apb had potential but ff14 was rubbish.

I regretted all th games that were f2p that i invested $ in only to stop playing them because they were just the same end game. I stopped falling for the gimmick of f2p's and just play around now.

I am waiting on defiance to go f2p or price drop and wildstar. I will never pre-order a game or buy on launch ever again it's just not worth the aggrivation and gamble anymore.

Just swtor only got 3 weeks out of it.
  • erictlewiserictlewis Member UncommonPosts: 3,022

I regret buying the ce for both me and the wife for swtor.  I very much regret buying 2 lifetime subs for me and the wife to LOTRO, and watching it go free to play and then transition into something I hate.

Regret spending $ on: Warhammer online, so buggy, had a team that didn't even care about the game. 99% of people can say it was a failed mmo.

    Regret Not spending $ on:

    Rift

    SWTOR

    It was worth it for:

    Rift- raiding

SWTOR- story, and PVP wasn't bad

    Still playing it?

    Rift- of course :P

SWTOR- havn't played in about 2 months

    Playing anything else now?

    NOPE!

    If so until when?

Rift- until i get bored, or when Wildstar/Archeage  comes out!

SWTOR- I'll return when they focus on PVP

I regret spending my money on WoW (Bought it when it came out, was a major disappointment...)

And SWTOR, TSW, Planetside 2 (Beta was good, game itself sucks now.), World of Tanks (Bought one "game card" from my bro for less than 10 euros, but still, not worth it.), Neverwinter (paid 10euros), Warhammer Online (had such high hopes and some good ideas, but still a terrible disaster.)

However, I am glad I paid for DDO, Guild Wars 1, Rift and Age of Conan. Those were all quite pleasant experiences.

We?re all dead, just say it.

  • IgorchtIgorcht Member UncommonPosts: 82

Regret spending $ on: Guild Wars 2 and Age of Conan

Regret Not Spending Money on: None. There's no MMO that requires payment where I've gone "Damn, I wish I spent money on that!"

It was worth it for: most of the other ones I spent money on since I played most of them for at least 6 months, but special mention goes to SWtOR and The Secret World.

still playing it?:  SWtOR: No. TSW: Yes

Playing anything else now? Neverwinter, dabbling a bit here and there in a few other F2P games. Haven't spent a penny on any of the F2P games, but I might eventually spend a couple of bucks on Neverwinter.

If so until when? TSW and Neverwinter: For the foreseeable future. I'm subscribed to TSW. The few other F2P I'm dabbling in will probably fall by the wayside in due time. Might drop my TSW sub for EQNext or World of Darkness Online, if they're good.

    Regret spending $ on:

SWTOR most of all - then Fallen Earth, Dungeons and Dragons, LOTRO..............

    It was worth it for:

    GW2 and Rift

    Still playing it?

    NO

    Playing anything else now?

    Age Of Wushu

    If so until when?

Maybe short, maybe long - - - will decide whether to continue VIP after current month is up (playing without VIP not an option)

Regret spending $ on: Im gonna look at this different..they say time is money...sooooo...i more regret spending time on Age of Wushu...I just didn't really get it..I should prolly give it another chance...people in the zones were not helpful at all.  This is a real short list cause if I don't like a game..I usually dont spend a whole lot of time or money on it.  Buying FFXIV was a mistake...(pre-ordered it too)  Hopefully the reboot is gonna be better.  SWLOTR - ok game...played mostly with a friend....got old real quick though.

It was worth it for: Rift...(YES...great game)  and Secret World

Still playing it? Rift (no) Secret World..Yes this game had to grow on me...I love it now...one of the more challenging MMO's

Playing anything else now? Neverwinter - GW2 (here and there)- Planetside 2 - very seldom

If so until when?  Just waitin on Wildstar - ESO

  • NamelessCNamelessC Member UncommonPosts: 26

Regret spending $ on: Secret World, GW2

It was worth it for:Secret world was worth it for only like 1 month, too much grinding involved and the story line was just not interesting enough.  GW2 actually lasted for 3 month or more for me. Got to the highest level and best armor, after that, there is nothing to do anymore.  Story was interesting but lack content.

    Still playing it? Nope

Playing anything else now? Played Neverwinter, planning to quit. Waiting for Marvel Hero now. 1 more day!

    If so until when?

Regret spending $ on: Champions Online, Warhammer Online

It was worth it for: Aion was seriously the best MMO that has kept me playing for a long time since EQ1. Maxed every class cept a sorc, and I wish I had 2 more slots for the new classes being added. Also EQ was definitely worth the investment. Also GW2 and Rift were worth it too. EQ2 was kinda meh for a while.

Still playing it? I will be later this month.

Playing anything else now? Currently playing GW2 and BF3 (I know it isn't an MMO, but its what I'm playing).

If so until when? I will probably play it until June 26th, when 4.0 and the new classes come out for Aion! I played Aion mostly from launch till a bit after 3.0 patch. Can't wait to go back to it soon.
