Will EQN conform to the mainstreamers? Or stay true to more traditional mechanics

When I say traditional, I don’t mean WoW.

EQ1 has been credited as being the first big MMO  (not taking  anything away from UO or Acheron’s call, both very great pre ’99 games) that set the bar for a lot of games. In a lot of cases games afterwards mirrored many of the mechanics after EQ, much like what we are seeing now with the so called “WoW clones” (although to a much greater, and degenerate degree).

Eq1 laid the ground work when it came to a lot of norms, and social system that would for years after the game be considered must haves for any mmo. Grouping, support, trinity, interdependency, raids, chat, gear, guilds, progression, endgame , alternate advancement, you name it EQ started it.

But now that the genre has been mainstreamed a lot of these great social systems have been destroyed, thanks to phasing, dungeon finders, over instancing, Maga- servers, and my most hated trend; Solo instance story and solo “chore” questing. Yuk.

ESO has already started down the dark path of giving in to a lot of the new generation gamers when it comes to over conveniences, and separating players with phasing ect.

My question is, How likely is EQN to stay true to their roots and create a game that has more of a traditional feel. Or do you think EQN will conform to the masses and create a socially shallow game like we have been seeing lately?

The way mmo's were: Community, Exploration, Character Development, Conquest.

The way mmo's are now : Cut-Scenes,Cut-Scenes, solo Questing, Cut-Scenes...

I think it could be anything. We heard it all before, sweet talking that makes you think "Yes these guys have a great idea", only to see the result weren't anywhere near what You hoped they meant, and often probably not what they thought either. Often a series of details can make a game completely different, and some games turn out good at launch and grow into crap, and vise versa. With SoE You just never know, but EqNext sure is the best hope we have at the moment.

Best guess is it will be a mainstreamer with a pinch of oldschool quality, but it the scales will tip towards shallow or great is hard to predict.

Vanguard had all the right ideas.

Eq2 sounded so very good on paper.

The ideas GW2 presented sounded new a radical.

Rift ... ladilalala, and so on.

The DAOC kickstarter sound good for that audience, but will it turn out like you think it will ?

I honestly think if they REALLY wanted to ramp up the hype train, they should take the old school mmo route. I think that doing it that why, mixed with sandbox style mechanics would really get people excited.

But in the end ..of course.. we don't want hype, we want immersion, and fun like we have had back in the day.

I'm really glad they are not going mainstream,  and actually have brought in new devs to actually think up a new level of  gaming instead of just mainstream, its what alot of gamers like myself have been waiting for.  Its what makes this game the top of the list to check out/buy and lifetime it for a decade atleast.  A game so unique and not mainstream, so you can always come back to it, unlike most mainstream games out right now that you play, beat, and leave for good.
