It really depends how they build the game. If they go true old school sandbox. No. If they make more a hybrid sandbox themepark yes. The trouble is this. Most MMO gamers today have never played a EQ1OUSWG sandbox period. If you drop them into a sandbox very few players will stay. I know because I tried to get my friends who only played WoW and other themeparks to get into UO. They were completely lost and in a matter of an hour they quit playing because they are use to hand holding. EQNEXT will have to do this in the first little bit of the game or otherwise they will not have enough players playing. So it will be determined by game design. I think it can be done right the question is will they do it right.
Funny that you mentioned SWG and sandbox.
Ironic that the same SOE turned the sandbox SWG into the themepark SWG overnight, and lost 99% of their playerbase with it.

You say very few players will stay if its a sandbox.. WoW is the biggest sandbox in the yard and 9yrs later its still king of the playground.

Wow a sanbox? lol!
That's like saying rockn roll would be rock n roll without Robert Johnson.

Funniest thing I've seen in a while, WoW being a sandbox?? WoW couldn't be more of a roller coaster if it was on rails my friend. There are ZERO sandbox elements to World of Warcraft
a) What exactly will they pull off? What exactly have they said they will do, or is this purely speculation?
b) When are they expecting to release?-If unknown, I can't even be bothered with this title then.
Yes. If all the rumors about non-static NPCs with sophisticated AI and lives as well as the ability to truly play in a non-combat role are true, it will do well.
Just go easy on the "sandbox" bit and recognize it for the Smedly hype it is. It will have sandbox elements but it's a lot more reasonable to expect a hybrid theme park with a dash of sandbox.

First WoW is not a sandbox period.
Second I said it depends how the game is designed. If it goes old school sandbox like UO/EQ/SWG I will say EQNEXT will be hard pressed to be a place where they stay. Many people who never played sandbox games will be lost with what to do. So it all comes down to design. And few Themepark players will go for body runs like in UO, or the possibility of loosen gear if you die. That is not today's gamer base.
The problem with making an MMO sequel is that it must exceed the expectations of the players by a degree far greater than an MMO that is not trying to one-up itself. They would have been better suited to create a entirely new universe instead of reusing an existing one. If you're going to reinvent the wheel... it's going have to be pretty spectacular. Unfortunately, developer track records as of late would suggest that more of the same is on the way. Even if it is a sandbox... are they really giving you something new, or more of the same.
A good example was the reincarnation of Battlestar Galactica as a TV series... anyone growing up on the original were basically floored by the new version. Pretty much NOTHING was the same as the original. Because a lot of viewers never saw the original, they didn't question the massive diversion from the original. It succeeded because it MADE NO ATTEMPT to be anything like the original.
Unless they are taking a entirely different view on Everquest, I can't see how it will succeed. But unlike Battlestar Galactica, too many people still remember the original... so to diverge from the old formula will turn off the fans of the IP. They should have come up with something entirely new instead of resurrecting the old.

It's obvious that you don't know the meaning of 'sandbox mmo' and that you have never played anything other then WOW lol.

I hope EQNext will be the next gen sandbox I've been waiting for since... UO or so, but I'm not holding my breath, especially now that I know it will be on the PS4. I feel like they might have to compromise too much of the sandboxy MMO aspects to appeal to console users.
In this day and age of MMOs, it's best to be cynical, because 85% of released titles fall short IMO.

I can see the qq-ing now. People complains they cannot find the NPC they need for a quest, or a vendor, and everyone is yelling over the chat channel about where NPC X has gone.
hahaha
In uo you could chop up a players corps. lol Should that be rated X?

LOL, you may be right. But that's the one "sandbox" feature I've been looking forward to in an MMO for years. NPCs that behave at least something like the ones in Dwarf Fortress. What bores me about MMOs is how everyone gets to see the exact same thing every time and the same npc needs the 10 pig snouts from all 10 million of us constantly.
A bit more randomness and uniqueness would go a long way toward revitalizing the genre. I'd be more than willing to put-up with finding out that the NPC I'm looking for got married, moved to a different town and no longer needs pig snouts... I'll find something or someone else. As long as they've provided equally fun things to do elsewhere, of course.

It is not hard to script NPCs to go around randomly. The reason that is not done probably is to prevent QQing .. because search for a NPC is not challenging and not fun.
The best place to use randomness is to generate new dungeons, and mobs with varying abilities like in the Diablo series. That is why people will spend hundred of hours running the same content again and again.
I really truly hope EQN is the biggest sandbox ever and it's done right and isn't released way to early. But I also have a deep seeded fear that the WoW generation will cry and cry until the game we want gets reverted back to WoW.
The minute somebody dies and has to do a corpse run the forums will explode with tears. Or when somebody realizes they might actually have to group with another player to level up the forums with explode with tears.
It will be interesting to see if SOE has the balls to tell these people to shape up or ship out.

Get to work team! lol (Just having fun.)
Art is fabulists!!

I am hoping that they port in the way bards were done in Vanguard and an updated diplomacy system from Vanguard.
Also if ESO does well they pay attention to how they did they game. I much prefer the EQ world to Tamriel.
The diplomacy system from VG would be fun to have in EQN. But I hope SOE completely ignores TESO, that game is going to be another swtor type of game. Launches with massive numbers then people see how shallow the actual meat of the game is and becomes a ghost town.
Unless it launches as a f2p model, then Zenimax will never tell what their actual active numbers are. They will just say we have 38953895 billion player accounts made!!!!!! Even though 38582358 billion of them already stopped playing!

Well, it's about time we send all the QQers to their room so we adults can play.
There's much more to giving NPC a virtual life than where they are. You probably already saw this old interview with Storybricks from a few months ago when they were just contracting with SOE... before SOE bough them. If not, definitely worth a read:

Edit: And Diablo? Yeah, what they do works well for Diablo. But I've always considered ARPGS the "beer and pretzel" games of the RPG world: lot's of fun when you're in the mood to veg-out with one eye on the screen. I expect something that involves me a bit more and demands more attention from my MMORPGs...it's a different kind of fun for me.

I don't know ya'll. Should we give them our faith and become fanboys and girls yet?
There is so much to a MMorpg..... I will never get over my excitement in the uo world.....and the excitement of eq..... What I mean is the funess of UO and the grafix of eq....
Emigine a PK showing up and he was bad ass.... Would you shut the game off after your char died or would you try to learn skills?
The opposite of consciousness is satan and I don't feel that theme park players are very conscious.

well, considering they have had 2 hits already, i will go out on a limb and say just if they appeal to the fans of the last 2 games, this one will be a success.
I am not interested in it much, I might give it a shot, but I doubt it'll hold me. (And really, with recent launches of trip - A titles, I've pretty much lost all faith in both the dev and gamers out there, games are designed to entertain very fast then become 'old' inside the first 2 months - like coffee taken by syringe.
