It wouldn't deter me from playing the game. I really disliked the EQ2 character models... and I would have to say its because they tried too hard on the realism aspect. I played a goofy looking ogre and gnome in EQ1, they are both "cartoony," but I enjoyed them both more than the art of any EQ2 characters.
EQ WONT have a WoW style of cartoon-like style. SoE is not that dumb, well it is SoE after all. I don't see it happening the current pic that was leaked last week was the proof.
Have you seen the recent pic? The armor style is very reminiscent of WoW
Better??? there seems to be shoulder pad trend here it seems and all similar to EQN pic.
The shoulder pad trend you mention is due to those specific armor sets being designed specifically for jousting competitions. They are not the sets that would have been worn into a real battle. Just saying.
I did sday they were for jousting in original post, was stating that the armor large sgoulder pad design was realistic armor set.
If the graphic art style will follow suit to these concept art photos, then it could be very likely that EQN might have "cartoon-like" art style similar to games like WoW and Wildstar. I'd personally much prefer a realistic approach to the art, as I feel it better suits the EQ universe, not to mention an immersive sandbox game.
I wouldn't mind. Eq1 graphics were hilariously cartoony and terrible because of the tech at that time, but it's why I loved them so!
Eq2 graphics were bad because they were just bad, every humanoid looked like a clay monster.
Playing: Smite, Marvel Heroes Played: Nexus:Kingdom of the Winds, Everquest, DAoC, Everquest 2, WoW, Matrix Online, Vangaurd, SWG, DDO, EVE, Fallen Earth, LoTRo, CoX, Champions Online, WAR, Darkfall, Mortal Online, Guild Wars, Rift, Tera, Aion, AoC, Gods and Heroes, DCUO, FF14, TSW, SWTOR, GW2, Wildstar, ESO, ArcheAge Waiting On: Nothing. Mmorpg's are dead.
the shoulder pad looks bigger than it is i think because of the angle the rest of the model doesnt look cartoony and as long as the color isnt cartoon puke like wow or the fat finger look like wow ill be happy as long as they dont look like shit when they move
alot of the armor in wow looks like shit rediculous shoulder pads and ugly color choices
I wouldn't mind. I think the concept drawings that were up looked good. I don't really care one way or another on aesthetics. As long as it's a good game, I'm fine.
Couldn't care less what art choices they make, as long as they are true to the mechanics that made EQ1 great. I want immersion, corpse runs, big world, dangerous (slow) travel, and all the other catalysts that created the sense of community that EQ1 had. The choices they make for music in the racial capitals means more to me than the art. Those things made more of a lasting impression 14 years later than the way our characters looked.
First : Concept art you provided is not considered cartoony , and is actually pretty awesome.
Second: EQN will not be cartoony because its exactly the opposite from the direction EQ was developing
Just speculation mate.
Also we have absolutely no info outside of a few concept art photos here and there to determine the art direction for EQN. The only thing they've been open about is the sandbox design.
Not quite true, Smed posted a new screenshot on Twitter showing off a base high poly count model, again it is not textured, but it doesn't look cartoony.
Well it's certainly not a realistic approach
edit: not sure how to post high res images because bbcode won't work so ill just link the images
The shoulder pad in the EQ next picture is acualy a realisic design, that particular design is use for armor mainly for jousting purposes, As you can see from the picture you'll notice only 1 side of the armor has a large shoulder pad aswell as a plate piece cming of the section near the neck this is to provide increased protection on the side of the body/neck that is facing the enemy with the lance.
Picture Below is showing a real armor set similar in design to the EQN shoulder pads.
The problem is... the jousters only had to worry about lances in one direction. Guys in WoW and Eq2 have crazy Orcs and whatnot swinging in all directions. That's why the need the large ridiculous shoulders. Do you know what would happen if you got your shoulder cut off? bad news. The bigger the shoulder protection the better in my opinion.
Point of the story is... who really cares about "real" when you're fighting Orcs and riding on Unicorns? Let's keep one standard here folks LOL
it's really kind of funny how many of you basement dwellers are offended by a certain art style.
if EQ:N has a more illustrative art style - i will play it
if EQ:N tries to look like crysis - i will play it
who really cares? both EQ and EQ2 look crappy today because they went with a more realistic approach so i don't think having more stylized art direction would be a bad move for sony with EQ:N. all i care about is gameplay, though. if this game truly is a sandbox then give me an open pvp server a-la pre tram UO and i will be happy.
Really as long as the game is presentable, the gameplay is always the winning factor for me personally, and from them early screen shots / concept art, it looks fine, just hope they diliver on some good gameplay.
I don't think I would want a cartoony style in EQN. For me, I have always felt the EQ series tends to be a bit more serious, in both their lore and in their portrayal of it. In many MMOs I don't mind this artistic style (I'm fine with it in WoW because I felt it conveys their world, and it looks absolutely fine in Wildstar), I think EQN is one of those games where the animations and artwork would be better realistic and would keep in theme with the playstyle.
In short terms, it would be like if ESO went cartoony. I know people have seen screenshots already, but if they were to do this at the last second, no one would expect it and I think a lot of people would be put off by it.
Graphics don't need to be realistic, but detailed. If there is detail, high quality textures and REAL ARMOR GRAPHICS (not just texture pasted on character's chest) then I'm happy.

This ^. I don' think we will see a darker/more realistic art style Like Skyrim, nor will we see Wildstar cartoony. I would imagine a slightly oversaturated version leaning more towards Skyrim with more colors. Just my thoughts though.

After seeing the trailer for The Division, there is simply no excuse for every single PC MMO to look like it should be on the Disney channel. This is bullshit.

If Planetside and Neverwinter had a baby they would name it EverQuest Next.
If WOW and Rift had a baby it would be called WildStar .
I sure hope not, I couldn't log out of NW fast enough.

I think that orc picture looks sick!

Aim Small, Miss Small.
Cartoony like Wildstar? yes, I would.

Current games playing: MechWarrior Online
Games being watched: Project Genom
Favorite played games: SWG, RomaVictor, and Xsyon
EQ is way less cartoony.
This is the best you could find and even that shows how WoW is cartoony.
Take an honest example, EQ rogue, and a WoW rogue. WoW is much more cartoony
I really hope they don't start with the huge WoW shoulderpads or I'm going to scream.
