This is what they did with GW1 and it had no open PvP. It is the same premise as the first game to farm stuff and make your character better. It is the basics of any good mmorpg.
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
WOW events in gw2? They said something about new era, big bang in gaming industry. At least if you copy wow than make a game good as wow and not some bad striped clone

And WoW is a clone of EQ. This game is not for you, but thousands of people are loving it and the subscription free play is an added bonus. To me it is the only game that has really broken the WoW mold and is thriving. Yes you kill mobs and a few other things just like in WoW, but that is about it.
GW2 is among the top mmorpgs right now, not only in reviews but in rewards it has gathered in its short time after release. The title of this discussion is another reason it is one of the best, Anet keeps turning out free content which is a rarity for this industry.

Nah man. First GW wasnt about farming. At least you didnt have to farm to be any good in game. Skill was much more relevant. And it didn't have open world anyway, I know. But GW 2 is open world.
Played: Lineage 2,Guild Wars 1 and 2, Age of Conan, Ragnarok Online, LOTRO, World of Warcraft, League of Legends, EvE online Tried: KAL Online, Face of Mankind, ROSE online Playing: CS:GO
For those of you complaining about the RNG there was a comment on GW2Hub that mentioned they would be dropping fairly frequently, also there are 2 types of chest, a cash shop one with a higher chance and random drop with lower chance, Im hoping this is what he means by ANet learning from the past.
Yes, they are dropping more frequently. However, the odds are still ridiculously, absurdly low. People are reporting getting 1 skin out of 850 chests. Another guy opened 2500 and got zero. Some poor schmuck spent $100 of his own cash to directly buy the chests from the Cash Shop. A hundred bucks! What did he get for his money? Zip.
ANET is dead. It's now CasinoNet. What a sad joke this game has devolved into.
Its a pity how they smashed the IP to bits with their cashshops and diddely doo "Ooooh look at me, my shield has a fancy dancy dragon in it", why not make it a proper game instead.
Because they can make more money abusing their core fanbase?
All games to this - please don't get on the high horse and pick on one.
People WANT the fancy shield, they want to look different and so they will pay. Not a big deal to me although the fest looks fun and cool.
Most, not all, MMOs these days do it to a degree but it seems worse with GW2 in this case because cosmetics are a big part of the game. The idea was having cooler looking gear rather than huge stats, right? Well after playing a while I noticed I would always out-level the dungeon gear once I actually got the set and I would need items to attach a specific look to every piece I upgraded. No bueno.
This event seems worse because there are two monetization points, chest drop which is controlled by RNG and then application of the skin.
GW2 is a fantastic MMO and I may play it again sometime but the way they monetize leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I loved the fact they went with looks > stats until I figured out the schtick. If others want to pay more power to them. In fact, Aion has the same type of chest drop events, I bet Wildstar will as well.
To all the people complaining about the cash shop... well... HELLO? What do you expect. That Areanet gets developers and servers for free?
You are NOT paying a monthly subscription, so how else are they going to make any money?
A recent reddit AMA by a zynga employee showed that on average only 5% of players ever pay for anything in free games. So those 5% then have to carry the entire company and all the freeloading gamers.
This is exactly what was predicted when the industry shifted towards F2P and all the kiddies shouted, but games should be free man! Well, now you got your cash shops. Happy?
