Trion has to be pleased with how well things are going. The transition to F2P was the best I have seen yet. And, Rift has always been a great game IMHO.

Have to agree with this entirely.

I love the way they've implemented their cash shop.  I can't say enough good things about it. Most everything that is paid for only with cash is cosmetic or service-oriented (Backpack slots, bank vaults, faction changes, etc.).

    Love it.

I expected it after Tera. There you had even bigger queues.

There will probably be loads of criticism on the cash shop and the patron sub system, but Rift deserves the massive attention it gets now. it's a great MMO. I played it some years back, came back, stopped again because of time issues, but since I have enough time again to spend on another MMO besides SWTOR, I came back  to the game 2 days ago. And I must say, it was a great restart. gameplay still feels fresh and dynamic and the Rifts kept me busy again, forgetting the time while playing.

One point of criticism though was the shut-down of my server (Iceshard-EU) and becoming a trial shard, players being informed on a very short notice. Reason being the shard was very over-populated... But then most of the shards are in these days after introducing F2P. What will happen with other crowded shards (crowded pre-f2p) like Blightweald-EU, where I tranfered my chars to. Well, time will tell I guess.

Beside that I think Trion was wise to make Rift f2p.

Expect Tera is a mediocre game overall and it's servers are back to being not so full, yes indeed.

I will have to download Rift once more it seems, sooner the better.

Give it a couple of weeks and like every other mmo that has gone F2P it will go down to less than half, it just means a lot of people are checking it out at the same time but not even a third will stay.

its only 2 days since it went free. so the most possible is that many more will come in the next days, considering the weekend too.

they already have almost all of their shards (18), with queue times. if you add the ppl that will come in the next few days, even if after they go down to half, it will be a very good number. both for TRION and the players.

i m happy because i like RIFT, i like the way devs treat to community and i like also very much their f2p model.

they deserve success because they tried hard all this time and they have earned the respect of the community majority.

Every major title that goes F2P gets a massive influx of players trying it at the start.

It would be wrong to expect all of these people to stay because enough games have gone through this and the pattern is the same. The number will drop off sharply over the next couple of weeks.

None of that is due to the quality of the game. Both the sudden influx and the sudden drop that will come are both what happens when major titles go from sub to free to play.  It is easy to get excited when you are a fan and the servers are all suddenly full, but it is important to keep it in perspective and understand that won't last. Generally the final numbers will be higher than before the transition, just not the crazy high that is present during the initial rush.

Exactly, I'm not bashing on the game or anything, I just mean that full servers are no indication of success for an MMO, other games that I love and have relatively low population are SWTOR, STO, and LOTR; and they ow their success to cash shop revenue and expansions etc. the fact that players keep paying for it over and over should say something about the quality of the game, not the server population density. And so far Rift has good production value, so, I can see it staying around for a while.

Rift is a good game but much of the the playerbase is less than desirable. Too many players are rude or seem to think they need damage meters and macros which generally ruins the game IMO. Those elitist  idiots are shortcutting the fun out thinking they are very clever.....NOT!  Just lighten up and have a good time with players yall perceive to be leechers and help the noobs understand the game's nuances. Then they in turn can become mentors themselves one day. This will assure a good healthy community that will keep the game going and the servers full for the long haul. Rift is a simple game so be friendly and quit trying to make it more complicated than it is.

And yes, I too believe the FTP conversion was done very well.

i didn't say that after the decline it will still be a CRAZY number.

if you read carefully i said that the number will still grow for some time, because its only 2 days since it went free to play, with the first weekend after it still ahead.

so i conclude that after the decline, even if the number is down to half or third, it will be still a GOOD number for both TRION and players. nothing more nothing less.

btw NA servers are also all with queue time, in non peak hours.

Er, yeah, is to be expected, and RIFT is a pretty solid game, shame people will only play it for free though.

    It deserves better.........

Servers going down in a few minutes so they can add even more servers =) I guess they didn't expect the amount of players just frothing at the mouth to play =)

They're discovering that if you offer something for free people will come and at least try it...Now how long they stay is another matter.

Exactly. This is a great opportunity to bring people back to see the new RIFT and introduce new players to it. I was pleasantly surprised to see the queues when firing up my old account and transferring characters among the servers.

Probably about a month, then they realize it's another themepark rehash of WoW, get bored and leave, just like they did the first time it launched. Just like what happens to almost all themeparks that go FTP.
