Poll: How critial are people to your fun?

ArclanArclan Member UncommonPosts: 1,550

For me, half (50%) of the fun derived from MMOs came from interaction with other players. What do you say?

Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon.
In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit

Depends. If it's open PVP the less people I see the happier I am. I don't like being bothered while questing and I have EVE level paranoia. It's hard to play fun that way.

For a PvE perspective I love it when things are completely overrun with players (assuming I don't have to compete for mobs).

I said 75% because it's 100% about my friends I play with and close to 0 for everyone else. If they quit or don't want to play an mmo I tend to not last long. No matter how much I like a game I don't like to play alone.

Had the same thing in WoW, a tightknit group playing together when one of us quit we all quit. been looking for that same feeling eversince.

It is not critical at all.

Sometimes it adds to the fun, but i don't depend on them for fun. Let me put it this way .. other people are just gravy. I play games which is fun on their own, with or without people.

The exception, of course, is pvp games. But that is no difference than having very smart NPCs to kill.

Given the right kinds of people, I'd say it makes a game more interesting, but it isn't essential, and given the wrong kind of people, which seems to be about all that inhabits most MMOs, I'd say I'd rather not have people around at all.

Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, Aion, Allods, lots more
Relatively Recently (Re)Played: HL2 (all), Halo (PC, all), Batman:AA; AC, ME, BS, DA, FO3, DS, Doom (all), LFD1&2, KOTOR, Portal 1&2, Blink, Elder Scrolls (all), lots more
    Now Playing: None
    Hope: None

Depends on the people entirely. Quite often, other people have a negative impact on my fun.

I don't know.  I'm not sure how to put a number on it.  I play solo, but it feels essential for there to be other players (real players) to be around, somewhere.
  • RusqueRusque Member RarePosts: 2,785

Having a good group to play with really elevates a game, but not for day to day content. I like playing with a tight knit guild in raid type content, but I don't much enjoy being tied down the rest of the time. I prefer to solo and pug small dungeons so when they're done I can just keep on doing whatever I feel like.

They CAN have a huge impact on how mug I enjoy an MMO. This all depends on the people and how the game uses the ability to interact with others.

Your title " How critical are people to your fun" for me has a massively different meaning and therefore a different answer to your poll question of  "How much of your MMO fun comes from interacting with other players?"

The last game I played I focused all my energies on wealth creation through crafting and selling on the AH. People were an important aspect to my fun because it was through trading that I made my profits, however, for me it was the crafting and wealth building that was my driving force which created my fun. The people were an important aspect of the process that made it fun but not the essence of my fun.

For your poll I answered 50% based on the actual poll question. The title - "How critical are people to your fun" I would have answered 75% or more.

    Very critical to me.

You see I don't like to go to parties or clubs where all you see is freaks with social problems. I want decent, funny people with style around me.

The same in MMO gaming. I hate stupid, rude and mindless behavior.

Let's take GW2 as an example. It's great. Decent talks in chat, all trying to get an objective done. No rude talking. I just wish there was more interaction but it's ok. This has a critical influence on my experience.

Makes a world of difference to me.  It literally can make or break a game depending on the community.

Pug groups getting worse to the point that anyone can roll for anything and people don't care.  Before this type of behaviour could make a person want to quit the server because the community wouldn't tolerate this type of behaviour.  I've seen players 'need' on every single item during a run (mob and boss drops) and no one bats an eyelash.  I remember once I ran a dungeon for a pair of boots and each time some other guy ended up with it, even though it wasn't even usable by his class.  Politely asking for the item as needed just gets ignored most the time...

Going into BG's and out of the 30 people or so in there only 2-3 are active players. Rest are bots.  How are you supposed to have challenging gameplay if people aren't even there?  How do they allow so many people to get away with botting?  Ridiculous.

These are just some of the reasons I don't really play MMO's much anymore.  I don't expect a perfect community but unfortunately some companies add/allow certain things to run wild and I wont be a part of that.

See, that's the main problem for me, the majority of people I see in an MMO are rude, stupid asshats that I have no interest whatsoever interacting with.  It doesn't seem to matter what game I play, it's the same general anti-social crowd in all of them.  It makes me not want to play, maybe that's why the communities are like they are, they've driven away most of the decent players already.

Same here, lack of community in a game, whether its through nonexistant or limited communication tools, or just sheer bad behaviour will cause me to leave a game faster than dodgy graphics will.image

I clicked on 25% but really it would be more like 5% or less.
  • BattlerockBattlerock Member CommonPosts: 1,393

I voted 75% the most epic moments have been in group play. This could easily go the other way though. Group play can also be very tedious and tiresome a lot of the times.

When I think about the fun I have in single player games too, people are not that critical.

Because I play slowly and take my time to "stop and sniff the daisies", it is very rare for me to find other players to play with. Hence the presence of other players in the world immediately around me is largely irrelevant to me.

In most modern themepark MMO's, other players are mostly "optional", because you can solo 75% of the game content anyway. And soloing just means it will take 3 days to reach level-cap, instead of 2...

In fact, other players can even detract from my enjoyment of the game if they decide to start bunny-hopping around the village market or some such idiotic behaviour.

Other people are very critical to my preferred method of fun, 100% requirement.

But my preferred enjoyment only works for a very small percentage of gamers.

This is a very good point.

I don't play games to socialize. So the "community" matters very little to me. However, i do like playing the AH. And also i like some pvp games. So i can't enjoy without other players to trade with (even anonymously) or pvp with.

But you seem to enjoy posting and interacting with us on here. So for all you loner dudes, give grouping and interaction a try in your MMO. It is not like it will kill you...Ok your avatar may get killed, but it is still the best part of the game. :)

in Defiance i will actually stop whatever i am doing if i find someone else adventuring and join them.

i have great fun in general adventuring with people in an open world.

dungeons can be fun, raiding if the group is chill, but mostly i just love running around 'liberating' areas from monsters and evildoers.

That is exactly my problem.  I play the way I want to play and if other people don't want to play that way, I don't adapt to them, I simply ignore them.  Most of them are real assholes anyhow so I don't miss them a bit.

50% for me. There are 2 very different gaming experiences for me.

With others involved (like grouping), the experience is all about the group and the players within it, not really what activity we may be doing. The pace of the game quickens. Tougher content can be attempted.

When I am playing solo, it is all about the activity I am doing. It is nice to have others around me and sometimes I may get a surprise or two from other players nearby, but they are not a necessity for my enjoyment in solo mode.

Others players, however, have kept me playing in some MMOs longer than I would have without them. I don't think I have ever quit an MMO due to the other players.

    - Al

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.
