so far the game has been decent at best. I hate sitting thru tons and tons of cutscenes and pauses for every single quest, also not being able to skip the intro movie is ultra-annoying too.
I know I am in the minority, but hated the stories in SWTor as well, I just wanna play the game, not read a novel or watch their cheesy movies
apologies...your post was TLDR...
i can't be bothered to sit through that much text....
I will give my opinion based on what is all ready public.
Its a beautiful world set in an old-school mmo.
You have to buy the box and pay a sub.
Its going to be on pc and consoles (that should help sales)
I don't see it as anything ground-breaking or standing above all other mmos. It has one heck of a lot of money poured into it (including the first version), so it needs to do well I would think. I have little doubt fans will be gushing over it, but I don't see it appealing to the general masses or average console players in great numbers.
My guess is it will go btp or ftp within a year of release (they have a tier pay system all ready). Or sooner if Console players yell to much about paying sub fees.
I have nothing overly negative to say about the game. If you like that style of mmo, you're enjoy this game.
If FFXI never went f2p then I dont see this one going f2p......Unless they feel they can make more that way there is no way they are taking that gamble....They need for this title to be a home run profit wise.
Reborn has a LOT more money in development than FFXI. Look at ToR. It needed X amount of subs. It sold a LOT of boxes, but it was unable to hold onto enough of its subs so it had to find a different way to make money. This is the Age of FTP. The risk is releasing a sub game.
Will a lot of people buy the box? Adding in consoles, yes. How many people will they retain as the months go on? I doubt enough to fill in the massive money pit they have. Keep in mind, they made a game and it failed. They went back and redid it (much more than what SWG did). I can't imagine the cash that's gone into this project.
Subs are an over time type of income generator. In today's market with so many choices that have little to no entry barrier and with so many more continuing to flood the market the average player is sampler not a stayer.
FF is betting the bank that they can not only get a lot of people to buy the box, but that most of those people will stay on long term. Its not going to happen.
The good news is. This shouldn't effect any of you. You like the game. You are willing to sub. Even if it goes ftp. I'm sure it will have a sub option, so I don't see a down side.
I would quit and flame the game on every forum I visit if this game ever went F2P I would feel so betrayed. I don't see it happening though, SWTOR went F2P because the "doctors" decided they weren't as into running a video game company anymore and wanted to cash in, as did their investors.
Square Enix did not use investor's money, and the money spent on the game is a small part of their overall budget. Neither of us can predict the future, but if they just wanted to sell out and rip off their fans with a cash shop they could ahve easily done it with 1.x and saved themselves the hassle.
I know many mmo's go free to play these days. Thing is SE designed it inhouse without investors or share holders. This is a good thing, i would say from what ive seen to far it might suprise alot of people who are going to try the open beta.
Indigo answered a few questions in the past wich i had, and it sounded cool / ok, but now i have the chanse to play it myself i can only say he was spot on.
Dont expect SE to reinvent the wheel, expect a traditional mmo with tab target and full Themepark. its more of a hybrid with Gw2 / WoW and yes i missed a good traditional mmo that does do what it suposed to do and that is giving me fun in every direction i take.
I might be bold to say this again, but this is becomming the best Themepark mmo on the market.
I'm enjoying it so far. I like that I don't have to do every damn little quest. Only been doing the main story one really and every now and then click on a few convenient ones.
Playing archer, fun so far, although maybe it is the magical aspect of it, but it doesn't feel like an archer heh. Kind of wanted more of a twang from the bow. This class is less stand still. Always moving around shooting, avoiding damage. I've stood still fighting before, worked fine, just took damage. Not sure how other classes play yet, but will try soon. Don't want to level too far up since I'm most likely going to buy the game now.
I also like the hunt logs. Killing so many of a certain monster to get an exp reward, and clearing out all the hunts for an even bigger reward. Kind of laughed when I ran into some Fates, but I always did like stumbling into a Rift.
Even grouped up randomly to kill some monsters. Been a while since I did that.
So glad SE stepped up with this! For me the engine is the best change they made since 1.0 :P. Actions actually happen with little to no delay which what annoyed me the most with 1.0 and made in playable for me (I shouldn't have to wait a few seconds to open a ui window).
While I don't mind all the text it would be nice if more of it was voice just because I think it would make easier to caught up in it.
I think the game is beautiful and a great jump above 1.0.
I know SE said (in discussion over the revenue streams, possibilities of F2P etc) that since they designed, funded and implemented it in house it means they have no one to pay back.
Thus the game can run with the pricing as they see fit (rather than going f2P to generate flagging revenues and the need to pay back an entity)
I am mostly concerned (I haven't seen past lvl 15 or so though I have a couple of characters that have gotten to that point) that one of the more common arguments from many 'Western' players (EU and NA) is 'No more kill X number of mobs' questing.
ARR is only (so far) kill X number of mobs. Enhanced a bit by the encouragement of the hunting logs which are...kill X number of mobs.
Makes me wonder if over time this will hurt the game. People will enjoy it for a while then rapidly become bored with the same old kill, kill, kill.
Crafting/gathering is unique and fun so far.
Oddly, while I am a PC player I am wondering if this game might be more enjoyable on a console.
And here is how much they improved it through 3 years, a relaunch, and localized data centers: http://youtu.be/m3ZZDvMxjLk
Wondering why people were taking damage 20 feet clear of voidzones at E3? That's why. They've done nothing to fix it. Pretty new zones, quests from WoW, events from GW2, and the same old lag that makes any normal play a nightmare. Pass.
The lag is better from what I've seen. Did you actually choose the NA server? Because when creating my character the default options were all japan servers.

I dunno what happend at E3, but there is no such lag, I am playing the beta and its simple not present.
I just went into Gridania to test it cause it worried me when you posted this, and I dunno if there was connection issues or something, but I cannot produce this issue at all.
I am becoming a fan boy as well, the game is simply that good!! as some said, its an old style mmorpg with alot of upgrades that dont take that feeling away, yes it is point and click, but the combo system is pretty nice, its not mindless. the graphics are amazing. the world seems pretty open, but i have to agree about the citys, its really annoying that the city is separated into parts, cant wait for the open beta!!
Basically clicking away text windows ruins every MMO, try to have fun instead of rushing things. Without story and lore all there is left is a bunch of mechanics. Reply Add Multi-Quote

Will it be the mmo for any1 ? no not a chanse. Its a heavy magic fantasy mmorpg in the style of Final Fantasy, evrything you do breaths this style of play. So i can understand of people say bleh no my cup of thee i prefer X or Y or Z, but that doenst take away that Yoshi stayed true to its roots with this series.
And like i said its a hybrid GW2 / WOW mmo, it takes the best of 2 worlds and pours it into one fantastic world.
No1 is preaching this will be the Monstrous 20 million Sub gigant that beats wow. And lets be honest that 1 trick pony aint going to work anymore in days where you can name 25 good mmo's.
For people loving the old Final Fantasy series this one will be epic shit all the way. For people loving fantasy mmo's it will provide masses of fun For people hating themepark / fantasy mmo's there are plenty of alternatives around.
Huge improvement from launch, smoothest beta I've tested to date. No lag, crashes or dc's. I consider myself an animation snob and it's absolutely perfect. That's how you're suppose to look when you run, fight and pick up an item! Character models and world graphics are just about the best out there top 3 at least. I'm a clueless FF fan but it definitely has an very entertaining lore that pulls you in, although a little whimsical for my taste. I admire the dev for the redo of this game, shows dedication and loyalty something missing in today's market. Can't wait until launch.

i cant bearly name 1 atm arr seems to be the 1 heh ffxi was good back in the day
This game is pretty much all I hoped it would be, Final Fantasy in a MMO. I can already tell that the leveling will take me a while cause I plan on reading the cities/class story. The skill chain combo system is good, I try to enlighten other thaums to stop spamming blizzard. The crafting in the game has to be my favorite out of all, I don't feel like I'm missing much cause it's a class of it's own. Can't wait till headstart and check out what the rest of the game has to offer.
Is there a way to get a beta code aside from signing up and waiting? Anyone know if they will do an open beta? I'm interested in getting a look at the game and the crafting/combat before I go purchase it...

Made a new account just to troll on the game i see cuz I been playin it since last night and havent run into any lag.
Yeah that's the thing people don't realize about this game (not by any fault of their own, it's not exactly "common knowledge").
SE is in the rare position of being their own Publisher. They have no one to answer to. No investors to pay back who want their returns "yesterday". No one dangling on-going financial backing over their heads.
Naoki Yoshida has explained in a few interviews that because they don't have these things to worry about, they don't have to be "in a hurry" to make the money back. They can get it back over time (and I believe they will, ARR is now *that* good, IMO).
Another thing to remember, FFXIV is only one of their products. FF is only one of their IPs, and their own IPs are only part of their business. SE is a huge company, that handles myriad products, as both developer and publisher. They have plenty of money to work with, which is what has made this whole thing with ARR possible to begin with.
So, how much they spent on remaking ARR doesn't carry the same freight for SE that it would for most other developers, because they don't have the same obligations. They can make their own rules and set their own time frames.
Just consider this, how many other developers would even have attempted what SE has, on any scale? Not very many. They'd have gone the "Oh shit, we're bleeding... F2P/Cash Shop... Now!" route, or they'd have shut down completely.
How many times over the years have people said "it's impossible for "x" game to ever recover without a complete remake from the ground up, and that will never happen..."? Well, if I had a nickel...
So just overcoming that hurdle is huge in itself. Then consider the amount of internal restructuring they did. Then consider the amount of people they put on the project (around 300 if I'm not mistaken?), then consider how much money they have spent on rebuilding the game almost entirely from the ground up. Then consider how much they've spent on PR, Marketing, etc. The "End of An Era" cinematic alone cost them around $3 million.
They can only do this because SE is in the rare (and likely quite enviable) position of having no one else to answer to but themselves. They're not in the same position they were back when Final Fantasy I was made. They're not on the verge of going out of business. Even if ARR was to fail miserably, they'd bounce back and continue on. This isn't the first massive risk and expense they've undertaken and come back from, after all. Anyone remember 'Spirits Within'?
SE is no stranger to "tough times" and, if nothing else, they're resilient.
And anyway, even having said all that, I have a good feeling that ARR is going to do very well for them. There are people whom, on the strength of Beta 3 alone, have gone and pre-ordered the CE - even though they already own the 1.0 CE and don't need to buy it again at all. There's a 12+ page (as I type this) thread of nothing but positive feedback, praise and "take my money now!" type posts - and a number of them are coming from the people who were the biggest doubters before.
I've been extremely critical and vocal about things with this game. I had my doubts based on decisions they've made that I felt were completely wrong. I now stand corrected. Yoshi-P and co. have made a believer out of me.
Make no mistake...ARR is a proper Final Fantasy game. Yoshi-P and Co. have done the "highly improbable" in turning it from a rolling train-wreck, to a solid, playable, immersive, engaging, polished and fun experience. The game, right now, runs better than most fully released MMOs I've played. No exaggeration. It's what 1.0 should have been.
But really, in a handful of weeks, everyone will have the chance to check it out and come to their own conclusions. And at the end of the day, no opinion is more valuable to an individual than their own. Hopefully people will go in with an open mind when forming theirs.
Personally, I think there's going to be a lot of pleasantly surprised people when this game goes fully live.

so far perfect example, of why you cant just try a game for 30 mins and uninstall. I was close 30 mins in, but now I am really enjoying it
I has weather and changing time of day I see already.
That trumps it over most cheaply and lazily done mmo's in the past several years.
Apparently it's coders don't find everything too "hard" like many others do.
For a beta it seems to ooze quality so far.
