It's cool to read so much positivity, but I'm waiting until I try it before saying much. As a sandboxer and fan of UO etc, I'm just not sure this game will suit me.
I do like to hear that the cities are actually important locations, though. That's something that is missing in so many games yet so critical to me when it comes to world building.
I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by FFXIV:ARR - it just sucked me in! I have never played a FF game before, bought FFXIV back in 2010 and was so unimpressed and utterly confused by it that I quit the same day But ARR is another story indeed!! I could not get enough of it this weekend, so sad the beta for the week is over already! I can't wait for phase 4 when I can make my permanent toon! Yay!
I am anxious to see how pvp is in this game, not really sure if you have to be max level to pvp or not... Still a bit confused here. But from what I have seen, I think this game is going to be worth the money and time I put towards it.
There wont be wipes after open beta?
Nope, they said in their beta schedule that once the beta enters stage 4, which won't be till like July I think, there will be no more character wipes.

According to beta schedule no, but, they said this might change depending on circumstances.

Well the depending on circumstances was based on the fact that some people might beta test on a PC and then ultimately buy the PS3 version, in that case their character data would not be able to move platforms and would be wiped. This is how I understood it at least.

No it actually has to do with whether or not there is a major data bug.
In phase 1 there was a major character bug (people would log in as other's characters), they squashed it but in order to do so they had to reset character data and there was a wipe.
So some catastrophic bug like that would require a wipe, it is very unlikely though. They are treating test 3 like Open beta so that open beta is launch quality.

That is not the case. You will still be able to play your PC account on PS3 as long as you buy the PS3 version. Also, Yoshi-P said the only way there will be a wipe between phase 4 and launch is if they find something game changing that will force a wipe of the ARR characters. 1.0 characters will be reverted to pre-phase 4 if a wipe is needed.
I'm not sure how much Sandbox there is later on but right now it's a lot of quests. Even with all the people darting all over the place running their quest, I found myself really having fun and enjoying the game a lot:)
Maybe once the population thins out in level and everybody is doing stuff with the crafts and jobs and guilds it will not look like everybody is ADHD.

For the record Yoshi P was asked what would happen if there was some terrible bug found in phase 4 that ruined the game.
He said he'd do a server wipe and delay the game if needed to make sure it went off without a hitch.
For me FF XIV : ARR is the best mmo experience in the past decade. Here's why:
Graphics: Something everybody agrees on. The game beautiful, graphically flawless, it's amazing how everything in the game looks fantastic. I find myself stopping to watch the scenery and zooming in and out on NPC's and Views in all kind of places and that’s something i never do in games. It's mind blowing how good the game looks.
The FF Factor : Playing this game, you know you're playing a final fantasy game, and it feels so good. If you are a fan, well you will be ecstatic about all the references to the franchise and if you are not a fan, it won’t really matter for you. The world, is a FF world, the characters, the humour, the graphics, the chocobos, the materia, the story line, everything is branded Final Fantasy.
The Music : Something i never cared for in a game until now. After playing every FF game there is, it’s awesome to just hear and recognise some classic final fantasy music and sound effects. Each time i level, i finish a quest, or comes a cinematic, the music feels so nostalgic and just reminds me of past gaming adventures.
The Cities : The cities in recent MMO’s are really just these hubs without much to them. In FF XIV : ARR the cities are awesome, and you spend time there because you need to, but also because you want to. The quest lines of each city are really interesting and teach you the lore, you have many establishments you need to visit which create a link to the city. It’s not 1 daily quest giver or the AH, it’s many many place’s and NPC’s that give it the feeling of the old mmo’s cities.
The NPC’s : Like every FF game, the NPC’s are really charismatic and add a lot to the story and the world. They are funny interesting and very well designed. It’s not your average game, where you click on the NPC’ without paying attention, scroll as fast and you can and just gtfo. You learn to like them, appreciate their humour, and let them finish their text.
The Mechanics : The game isn’t breaking the mold of the MMO genre. Nothing is really new, but you have a lot of mechanics that are proper to FF games that you don’t find in other games (linkshells, Great Companies, levelhest, Guildhest, Materia, all the guilds and their quest lines, a typical FF class and Job system etc) and some innovations like the Fate or the Armory systems. All the systems in place are really solid. The game have everything in it and more. It won’t be a GW2 without a Group Finder system, or a half ass Guild/Friend list interface or incomplete stuff. This game have everything, and everything is working smoothly.
The Interface : I beta tested the game back in 2010 and hated the interface, and it was obvious to me that the interface was more adapted to console gaming than PC gaming, that and some other reasons made it that i never purchased the game after that beta test. The interface of the 2.0 version is just amazing, you have all you need, it’s pretty ergonomic and have a FF feel to it as you will recognise some of the interface parts from other games. It can be adapted to your linking and there is plenty of options to mess around.
The Gameplay : If you are a PC gamer, rejoice ! It is working very well with the mouse / keyboard and you will be feeling at home immediately as it’s your typical MMO gameplay. For the specific gameplay of class’s. You can look for a typical gameplay with the good old caster/mele fighter and if you want something that breaks a little bit the mold you can play the pugilist or probably other class’s i didn’t try. The thing is, they are pleasing everyone with new and old school gameplay mechanics.
For me, the multiple class / jobs mechanic is really interesting, because it shows that there is plenty of content, grind, and customisation around your character. You can level many class’s with the same character, mix their spells, and build your own class out of what you got or you can tailor a job that is meant for a specific role, it’s a little bit restrictive compared to the freedom of the class system but also more efficient and powerful for the role you want to fulfil and you don’t even have to choose since you can’t have and do both !
It feels like an MMO ! There was people all around i swear ! i talked to some, even grouped with some, and we used the chat too ! crazy right ? It wasn’t instanced bullshit where you are all alone. It wasn’t about how you are the hero and you do everything alone and you are pushed to never speak to nobody. The game is built so that people interact, talk to each other, and get that urge to just play together and group and socialise which is something nonexistent in the recent games. The World is huge, the cities are huge, everything is overwhelming and it have that 1 hours part that the old gamers know very well where you are lost trying to figure out things and wonder around the main city trying stuff.
It have content ! and i’m not talking about the late game content, or enough quests for you to level to 50. There is already so much stuff to do aside from your main quest / leveling your character. There is a lot of stuff to do, and you have the choice to do it. It’s definitely more a sandbox game than a themepark game, but not as sandbox as an archeage. It’s just enough for the fans of both types to enjoy themself a lot.
To those of you a bit iffy about this post, it's spot on. The game is beautiful. All of the complaints I had about the trainwreck that was the game in 1.0 have been fixed for the most part. I didn't get too far into it, because with what little I did play it, I knew this would be a buy type situation, and I didn't want to ruin the beginning of the game completely for myself at launch. The game is GREAT now. There is no other way to describe it. It will definitely be worth a look in open beta, and I would wager a good deal of you would agree worth a buy after that.
You are killing 3 lady bugs and 3 funguar because the conjurer guild master asked you to do so. Why would a tree hugger like him ask you to do such a thing? Well a lot has changed since the meteor Dalumd crashed into the continent of Ezorea, and he knows this, certain species are growing out of control, and they must be kept in check.
There are no quest hubs, there are quests that take you to towns, just like in ANY final fantasy game. They lead you to other adventures in other towns that lead you back to the towns you've been before which all culminate in a larger story about the area how you've been involved in saving it etc.
Very Final Fantasy.
The combat is limited at low level, just like every single game ever. When you get more jobs / classes unlocked you can go and socket more abilities to yourself when you are leveling another class at low level. For instance you can have Cure at level 2 as a conj. when you switch to Gladiator and you hit level 2 you can equip Cure, thereby adding more buttons, more skills, more combos, and more strategy to every class / job.
People are upset about the start of a game being slow... I'm baffled.
Most people are going to skip the quest text, I know I did after about 30 minutes. At least they didn't waste a ton of money on voice-overs.
No quest hubs? Flat out wrong. The adventurer guild is the most obvious example. You pick up a bunch of quests, go do them then teleport back, rinse repeat. In the world you go from outpost to outpost picking up quests.
I agree that the multiclass system is very interesting, and I do think the gameplay speed is pretty fast. Still, the combat system is still very basic - tab 1,2,3 while waiting for GCD and trading attacks.
I am not even ripping the game, its a well put together theme-park. I plan to play it, but I am not under any illusions that this is going to play any differently than WoW / Swtor or any other clone. The world is different enough to keep things interesting.
You are spot on, everyone is excited to be able to get their paws on this game and they are burning through as much as they can, there is plenty of content to sit back and enjoy nice and slow though.
It's really not very quest centered, keep in mind once you complete a major story quest and get a huge hunk of EXP that you can't do that quest again, its a one time thing. So the next class / job you play you can't level quickly through those same quests, and they are finite. Think of Quests as telling the story of the world.
So there will be plenty of group killing large monsters and grinding in various forms later on, with people being very friendly and chatty and less ADD
Well each zone is pretty big and open and on top of that the graphics and scaling of the environment makes it that much more immersive. Plus its gotta great crafting system and you can take up all crafts and all classes if you choose to. And also it will have housing at release. I am not sure but i heard that housing spaces will be shared with other players like in neighborhoods and you can also buy and sell other players houses. You will be raise your own chocobos which can fight beside you or you can mount them. Yea the cities are great, other than players they are crowded with NPC doing things and the background noises of people chatting and working and such.

The housing system sounds pretty neat I think. I like the idea of having neighborhoods of housing, being able to sell your plots, having an actual outside and inside to your house, decorating it with craftable items like the head of a primal you slayed (which a crafter then mounted for you) to hang on the mantle.
Then with planned chocobo raising/breeding, being able to grow your garden. It is not a sandbox, but there is plenty here to help you get invested in long term if that is what you like in an MMO.
Most people are going to skip the quest text, I know I did after about 30 minutes. At least they didn't waste a ton of money on voice-overs. Where did this belief come from, that Voice overs cost lots of money? They don't, right now people are talking for free, to get some people to talk into a mic for your game is really cheap, even SWTOR said so multiple times, yet this urban myth won't die...
No quest hubs? Flat out wrong. The adventurer guild is the most obvious example. You pick up a bunch of quests, go do them then teleport back, rinse repeat. In the world you go from outpost to outpost picking up quests. The adventure's guild is a.. Guild for adventurers... Have you never played Phantasy Star 4? Or any game where you are a bounty hunter / adventurer? You don't pick up a bunch of quests... that is simply untrue, the most quests I ever had in 14 so far was 4, and that included Leve's. Its becoming clear you might not have paid any attention to your game play experience :-(
I agree that the multiclass system is very interesting, and I do think the gameplay speed is pretty fast. Still, the combat system is still very basic - tab 1,2,3 while waiting for GCD and trading attacks. As a marauder I was tanking everything I met, even things other Marauder's had started fighting before me, and they were higher level. Clearly they were doing something wrong, and I was doing something right. That means there is a level of skill required to execute the abilities. You can dodge out of attacks, you can stun attacks and you can use abilities to create combinations. Its again, very painfully clear you were not paying attention to the game when you had the chance.
I am not even ripping the game, its a well put together theme-park. I plan to play it, but I am not under any illusions that this is going to play any differently than WoW / Swtor or any other clone. The world is different enough to keep things interesting. You need to free your mind from these terms 'theme park' 'sand box' Most game developers are now, They are trying to make an online game that is fun. Guess what this game is most like? An online Final Fantasy game. You can force a puzzle piece into the wrong slot if you'd like, enjoy.
yes only one post, i'm a long time reader of mmorpg but never really cared to post anything. It's been a long time since an mmo got me exited or eager for the release, i think the last one was wow vanilla... So after this beta week end, i just felt i wanted to share how awsome playing this game felt, and i don't work for any gaming industry lol that's just taking the suspicions too far.
I'm also very pleased to see that the game will be suscribtion based. It's like people stoped having any value for money when you see people buying mounts in Neverwinter for 40$, or a respect for 6$. Most F2P mmo's have crazy prices that for some reason everybody is ok with. I prefer paying a monthly fee and not having to worry about a thing.
I will be as strong, and as advanced in the game as the guy that could have spent 1000 dollars. And i won't have to buy bag slots, mounts, character slots, xp potions or w/e kind of get it done faster potion, no random box's with epic loot that comes once every full moon and where people sink tones of dollars for the RNG chance to get the ubber object.
There is a lot that I have been recently reading from people like you that has turned my interest to this game. I like that there is a trinity, I love that it is a sub model, and the game itself seems to have become very polished to make up for its past failure. It seems to be the polar opposite of all the mountains of trash that the industry is clogged with right now.
Although I already mentioned it, thank jeebus it has a sub model. I'm done with this whole "B2P then get driven to a Cash Shop by funneling game mechanics" schtick. Let me pay my sub and get access to everything like everyone else. No more nickle and diming crap. I hope this game attracts a ton of people so the gaming industry can see that having subscriptions is still a viable way to go.
My only regret is that I can't buy it and log in today. I'll be signing in as soon as its available.
I'm not sure how much Sandbox there is later on but right now it's a lot of quests. Even with all the people darting all over the place running their quest, I found myself really having fun and enjoying the game a lot:)

I think players even have the choice of gaining experience the old fashioned final fantasy 11 way if they chose to by going to a zone with higher level monsters with a group because there is experience chaining just like in FF11. The faster you kill the more exp you gain.
Count me in as one of the people who shares the OP's opinion.
Was not holding my breath for this title at all and I went in there just to see how it was.. Boy.. beta 3 just swallowed me whole.. I just could'nt let go.
As far as graphics are concerned... well, granted a picture is not giving the same "feeling" as when you see it in action, here are a couple screens (without any of that fx thingy that I can't care to install) showing day/night cycle in town:
Through the course of the weekend, I went from not caring to... pre-ordering !
Im the biggest MMO hopper around (probably have played about 20 or so mmo's the last 3 years) and after this beta weekend I think I have finally found a home. I just have a questions, I know since I have previously owned FFXIV I don't have to repurchase the game, however is there any benefit from preordering that I wont get from simply using my old copy account (some preorder bonus ill miss out on?)
I 100% agree with the OP. This game is amazing. I definitely recommend hopping into whatever phase of beta you can get into, and checking things out for yourself.
FFXIV is good, but its ntohing new, just that the new Developer Yoshi took stuff from WOW, Rift, GW2 and made the game feel more like an MMORPG instead of the pile of crap version 1.0 was.
This game is now very fun for FINAL FANTASY FANATICS!!!
If you don't like Final Fantasy, then there is no point playing this as it offers nothing new, no innovative/action combat, no sandbox elements, no building things, no changing the world, no open world PVP, no player created content and so on.
I like FF though, so for me its gonna be fun, Its like playing any modern themepark MMORPG(wow, rift, gw2), but with the final fantasy setting.

I don't like Final Fantasy was never interested in the games despite the hype. I'm not knocking it but it is not my style, I'm playing more for the complete overall MMORPG experience. I consider a great many things about it to be superior and more promising than other offerings available.
Action combat, "sandbox" elements, changing the world, open world pvp, and player created content are not the only things that would attract me to an MMO personally (several of those are turn offs). I like housing though, and we have that.

GAME TIL YOU DIE!!!!
