Originally posted by flizzer I have to agree I usually don't like playing humans and feel surprised when they are actually the most played races in these games usually. Humans are actually almost always the most popular race (because it's the race most similar to ourselves). Elves are a close second, though, usually.
I have gotta say, though, I like how the races are handled in this new XIV. I had originally planned to go Taru (or w/e they're called now), but I ended up going a human mage instead. I couldn't get passed the mannered proportions of the Elvaan, and I've never been a big fan of the galka or mithra. My opinions may change at launch, though. Tough to say.
I like to play the brutes in any MMO, but after this BETA weekend the Cat dudes, male Mithra's or what ever they are. Were really cool. I never thought I would like a feline species to play. I mean I hate cats IRL, but their stances, animations, and the way the gear fits around their features is just.....cool. I might still up playing the big brute guy, but now it has me thinking.
I like the races just fine, I played a male mi'qote and he was pretty wicked, had him lion like with dark bronze skin, tawny hair and yellow eyes.
As for the races, they are the races. I'm glad they are there just for appearance variety really, if anything I'd say they just need to tighten up the running animations (WAY TO FAST for how slow the larger races go, especially when sprinting) so they are more appropriate.
As for troll, ork, whatever... those are beastmen, they're not supposed to be playable, that's part of the lore of the game. Closest FF games get to inhumans is like the Ronso (Which I would totally love having as an option) and Red XIII was pretty close to the last of his species or so he thought for a long time. In other words: The reason they are special is because they are RARE. That is what makes them stand out. If there is three thousand of them running around... well, not really special or rare anymore is it.
Also: Not sure what world some of the other posters played on but Trolls were all over the place when I played WoW. Personally I like all the races, they have that FF feel to them and new races could be introduced with expansions easily. Though personally would rather have more jobs and classes.
I'm in the traditionalist camp in that epic fantasy should be human-centered, with non-humanoids serving the "magic frog" role for the human protagonists. But if someone wants to play the magic frog, no skin off my back.

I am the same about the miqote. I hate cats IRL (they are a pest here in Australia), and I am strangely drawn to this race. Everything about it is cool.
I usually only play human. So that's fine with me.
I feel as if being a human not playing human is a betrayal. It is like not supporting the team of your own country during World Cup or Olympics and cheer for another country. It is a traversity. I'll only cheer for another country after my own country bowed out.
As the general in Avatar said, "How does it feel to betray your own race?"
1. That guy was a supreme douche
2. Betraying the war machine is not the same as betraying your race. Humans didnt lose in that war. The Corporation lost. And I dont say all corporations are evil, but they arent all good either. No reason to support any one of them just because they claim to be on our team. For the most part - corporations are focused on profit not patriotism.
But to the thread - I will play the race that looks best. Im leaning to Elezen atm, but I want to look a little more into the char generator still. Hyur look fey or ugly, lallafel look too chirpy, miquote females look good but males again look too fey, and roegadyn look orc-ugli.

I don't want to offend anyone, but I usually tend to find people who play as humans in games where they are given the opportunity to not as generally uncreative/unimaginitive. We live our entire lives as humans; why pass up an opportunity to be something different?
I dont know about draw me to a game, but I am with you its about time games think of more diverse characters.
Humans/Elves/Dwarves - Done to death.
Would love some more originality, heck look at Tolkeins book for some ideas, heck even LOTRO had spiders on etenmoors, whilst not directly a playable pve race, at least was soemthing a little diffrerent
Why can't they consider animal races, instead of humanoid figures ...
All power to the non humanoids
EQ is king when it comes to races, no other IP comes anywhere near it.
I for one were hoping that the male Miqo'te would be more Ronso like tbh. (if anybody remembers Kimahri Ronso from FFX), and while I really did like the way the male Miqo'te turned out, (I found it very intriguing), I still hope that they will add something similar as a Ronso playable species in the future
I personally like the more "brutal" cat race, but even so, I will most probably play male miqo'te at launch

Did you just try and say that humanity is bland and boring? Pretty sure a lot of pretty impressive creative works center around human beings, not to mention our often far more interesting actual history. Humans have quite a bit of potential, and we possess the imagination to make all things possible including every video game ever created so I think following in those footsteps is hardly limiting to "role play".
I'd put my bets on humanity over orcs, gnomes, elves, or any other attempt at a human knock off any day. The original and the best, humans! Everyone else in fantasy is just an imitation (or a non-speaking, non-intelligent beast even the motivations etc. of most dragons in fantasy resemble the that of something more human than not).
lol, I was going to play a human but ended up changing my mind to Mi'qote by the end of last weekend. Theyre just better made ... with more character than Humans.
Not that im playing female but a great example is how when female Mi'qote jump, their "mid-air pose" reminds me of a kitten playing with yarn. Mi'qote will probably be the popular "cool" race to play but I dont care, lol.
Oh and for the record, for non-human race/species I vote for Ronso if they want a big badass and Burmecian/Cleyrans if they want sort of an "inbetween" Lalafell and the rest. Viera are just blatant "look at me, im a playboy bunny" for the pervy players that gave MMORPGs its alternate meaning. I actually found them out of place in FFXII and we already got Mi'qote filling that role anyway. :P

I'm a big fan of having different species options myself.
In WoW, my favorite race was draenei.
In GW2, my favorite race is asura.
In EQ2, fey were my race of choice.
Sadly, in FFXIV it looks like I'll be going just the normal human route.

Killer robot race/species/thing!

I avoid playing as a human whenever possible.
Charr, Orc, Iksar, or Tiefling; whatever is available that is not human I prefer over humans 100% (usually the farther the better).
Since when is Tuesday a direction?

The races in FFXIV are one of the biggest draws for me!
I can see myself wanting to make at least one of each.
Well, maybe not the Elves, never really like how long and disproportional their limbs and necks look.
EQ is king when it comes to races, no other IP comes anywhere near it.
Pity other devs don't have the same imagination.
