DAoC was always build for peoples who have a bad experience with EQ.
Broading it to EQ2 and anything SoE is touching, is doing them publicity and focusing on it.
However, it is a lot harder for Mythic to adapt to a game that come AFTER DAoC, since many of the features in DAoC are a variation of existing EQ feature.
This Mark guy is bright. What does he have to lose to blast SoE in a relatively polite way? His customers will still hold to the product, the game is define by EQ hatred.
The worst thing that could happen to DAoC would be the dying of EQ, and since SoE is focusing on EQ2, they try to adapt and change their focused hatred to EQ2, which may succeed or failed, since EQ2 is not EQ...yet...
DAoC is build like Endorean was on my EQ server, Endorean was prospering and doing extremely well as the second best guild of the server, they did amazing things. But, the day the main guild died (Legends server and TR recruiting among them kill them), Endorean timer was started...they reach a peak, kill Quarm...and died. Now there is a version 2.0 of the initial guild, and this is exactly what DAoC is working on. Will they succeed? No idea, but Johny by answering him act the best way he could, it is almost a chivalric answer. Johny wont lose or win much from a conflict with Mythic, since Mythic appeal to disgrunted players, and unhappy players are better away from happy players. Yet, such a conflict, a ''duel'', is certainly providing an interesting alternative to disgrunted players, especially with WoW out there.
Mythic is often brash and going those ways, and it have it own merit. I certainly hope this Mark guy will buy Johny a beer 1 day!

"Order a lvl capped char of your choice for 29,95$" : Actually you can in Ultima Online, they have also been managing account transfers for a fee for about the last 3 years.
Nothing new here, just that since they backed down and now are scared of implementing this on all servers the effect will be null. Most people will not want to play on an Exchange server even if they may occasionnally purchase something. Platinum, accounts and articles will continue to be available to all who want to buy them on all servers. Scammers will continue to scam.
Makes me wonder if the people making all the noise are the sellers who are afraid that such a system would create too much competition and make prices go down......
its about MONEY plain and simple. SOE has decide to rape its customers for all it can. just look at its pricing structure for eq2.you can pay 40-50 bucks a month to play that game for ONE account.they kow people are making bucks off char so they want THEIR cut.
this sounds like a good idea to me. i think this jacobs guy is simply playing on the knee-jerk, emotional reaction from hardcore players.
if soe wants to crete a forum where people can trade online goods..well, good for them. its not like you are buying equipment that wasn't in the game to begin with. soe makes money, people who want to be lame and buy equipment can do so, hardcore players are unaffected because they're earning their loot...i don't see how anyone loses in this deal.
Originally posted by fawd Okay, In my personal Opinion. SOE is by far the BEST MMORPG game creator of all time. EQ, EQ2, Planetside, SWG... must I continue? In conclusion... Mark Jacobs is an ass, and it isnt wise messing around with one of the BIGGEST companies around.
Ok, just touching on this real fast then Im out of this board because I keep my posts only to important things usually, Only Eq2 and Planetside were created by Sony. Everquest and SWG both had other developers... not to mention Asherons Call 1 and 2 which will soon be if not already a part of sony's station program...
I am taking a wait-and-see approach to this. I myself would never buy an item for a game, because I am opposed to spending real money for something insubstantial. Paying the monthly fees for a game is quite enough for me, thank you. But, if other people want to engage in this type of behavior, there really is no way to stop them. SOE is just taking advantage of this to make a buck. I can only say I am humored that people are suprised by this, since large corporations are perpetually driven by chasing the bottom line. SOE is a part of the huge SONY conglomerate, so it stands to reason they want a chunk of this market.
Also, personally attacking SOE employees is just plain silly. I'm sure Mr. Jacobs is a nice guy, and I applaud him for sticking to his guns. However, nobody knows what prompted this decision by SOE except thier employees, and -is often the case in the corporate world- I'm sure they are just towing the corporate line. Mr. Smedly may be diametrically opposed to this concept, but if his boss tells him he better get a chunk of this aftermarket money or else, well, he is going to do it. Real people have real problems. I'm sure Mr. Smedly has a nice car, house, and family that he has a responsibilty to pay for, and I'm sure he -like most normal folk- would not jepordize thier welfare just to stand up for his opinion.
Lastly, I just wanted to point out that Star Wars Galaxies WAS developed by Sony Online Entertainment. Development was overseen by LucasArts, but - as they have no developers of thier own- no programming was done by them. I don't know how many people are aware of this, but LucasArts laid off all of their in-house development teams years ago, and now they just exist to oversee development of Lucasfilm and LucasArts related intellectual properties, and publish games based on those properties. That's why companies such as Raven and Bioware are developing the Star Wars brand games now.

How do you do that ? 14.99 per month plus 3-4$ for premium services. far from 40-50$. In EQ 1 there is a premium server which costs around 40$ a month or maybe you mean all Station Access which is 21-22$ which brings you to 25-26 with premium services. But then you have on account on multiple games, I imagine that anyone who does that is at least playing 2 of the games and 22$ for 2 subscriptions is a good deal.
Of course SOE is there to make money, I must admit that the the adventure packs bother me a lot more than the premium services.....

Ive been buying goods sense there where games you could buy goods in. Never seen it bring any of them crashing down. I just got a promotion, spent my bonus on a 2k$ 52 widescreen HDTV and Im getting ready to put down a payment on my next car, and Im sad for spending 20 a month on a video game? Haha you are the one that is sad
And just what does this have to do with the topic in question, other than making comments about your so-called personal wealth?
