Absolutely !
The game has a whimsical style, full of slapstick humor and over-the-top imagery. How could they ever have pulled that off in a hyper-realistic game world ?
So far, most MMO's have gone with the serious angle. The threats are dire, the battles epic and the heroes chiselled and grim-faced. Anyone that dares to smile is promptly decapitated with a finely detailed and lethal-looking 30-foot battleaxe. The only characters that get to laugh are those dungeon bosses that get the signature maniacal "Muhahahahaha"...
Wildstar's Cartoon Capers comedy is a fresh new script.
See, I am of the opinion that you can have whimsy and slapstick without the highly cartoonized look. That's like saying all comedy movies have to be done Looney Tunes style in order to be funny.
No.. you can't compare movies with games. Games aren't on a level where they can really pull realism without look retarded. Go watch cinematics from both wildstar and a realistic looking game and come back with your opinions. I'm talking about in game engine rendered cinematics.
I've seen Wildstar's cutscenes, and they are not for me. To me they look stupid and turn me off from wanting to play the game. I've played other games with a similar style and have been fine with them, but not when it comes to MMOs. Its the reason why I was never able to go back to WoW after other games came out. But that's just me. Different strokes for different folks I guess.
Originally posted by azzamasin I feel this game would of been so better off if they had gone a more realistic graphics approach. I plan on playing WS but I will most certainly have to hold my nose at the GFX until I get accustomed to that style again.
Yep I feel the same way. I can never feel very immersed in a world if it isn't realistic looking at least somewhat and immersion is important for me. Still looks fun and I'll play it but I will always have preferred they didn't go with that approach.
Have you ever played platformer games like Jak and Daxter, Crash, Spyro, etc?
Yes I have and they are fun, which I imagine Wildstar will be too. But never have I felt immersed in those worlds. Are you trying to find a way to tell me my own opinion is wrong?
No. I'm trying to figure if posters ITT are old or just never owned a PS2, N64, etc. Which is perfectly fine.
Realistic graphics are over rated. They aren't fun and don't give any feel of attachment.
I'm sure in a couple more years will get there though. Just not now imo
This guy sums up my opinion on "realism" in games much better than I can.
I always found things like Xenoblade to be much more beautiful and immersive.
Environments and lightning and atmosphere are far more important to me than the hyper-realism fetish AAA gaming has going on these days.
Looking over a snow covered mountain range (which happened to be a titan's arm) while the rock formations illuminated the night, with the Mechonis towering above you in the background, nothing has yet to top that scene for me.
While i understand what they went with. i wouldnt have gone with a total Realism either. I find realism is pretty borning, 50 shades of brown isnt that great. Stylized realizm i would love to see more often.
Because i can. I'm Hopeful For Every Game, Until the Fan Boys Attack My Games. Then the Knives Come Out. Logic every gamers worst enemy.

I've played all of those and thought they were fun...when I was a child. Now that I'm older, my tastes have matured, and the immersion for me with cartoonish style games is not there for me.

I just have hope that Wildstar will bring hours of fun like I had with games like Jack and daxter, crash, animal crossing, and serveral other but in a MMORPG which I've always wanted and with the current MMOs in the market I won't find it.
These games chasing an "Epic" role in an "Epic" world never really grab my attention for long periods of times.
I recommend you to watch this video. It's a summary of wildstar's lore. It's really good. I think it will help you get hooked http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gJ7egD7rU8
Also can you link me or tell me of a game with realistic graphics that is emerging and has good engine cut scenes?

I don't know about you but all these realistic games haven't brought me the same fun I used to have. I'm convineced that it's not because I was younger but rather because these newer games seeking realism aren't mostly about fun but rather what they can do with the latest technologies...
Oftentimes i think that big game studios mainly care about going with the "latest" technologies as an ego booster and hype machine. I feel they don' give a crap of making something fun to play for hours but rather tell a story and make it look the best they can and that's it.
I understand why they used that kind of graphics style, and Im okay with the reason.
I still wish they didnt go so primary color palate and cartoonie animation.
Exactly, you can go a sort of half ass anime or Disney look but at least put some quality into it.I would never expect Pixar quality but their effort in the graphics department is extremely sub par.
I like a lot off what this games does,i was already and set to play it but after i think more and more about the graphics they would ruin my whole gaming experience.
I am not sure what some think is the reason but my opinion is it was simply a Blizzard staff used to having it easy selling low end tech.It allows them to run the game on pennies and they could hire an amateur networking person because there should not be any special needs to get 30 fps out of this game.
One other deal breaker for me in the gpu department is i really like housing in games. However if my house looks like a cartoon ,sort of like a Fred Flintstone house,i would be right turned off.I like housing in EQ2 i only wish it was in the open world and not instanced, this game's housing will not come remotely close.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!
Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!
Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

I'm 34. It sounds like we just have different and opposite experiences on what results in fun and a feeling of attachment for each of us individually. So, for you, realistic graphics are over rated - doesn't mean they are, you just don't like them. Plenty of others do, have fun with them, and feel attachment to them.

I admit those scenes look good. But again, my concern is that though it looks fun it doesn't seem like it would be fully immersive which is one of the main factors for me in an MMO. That's just my play style, and I know others play differently.
As for cutscenes of another game, there's none I can really think of, but here's one from The Secret World. Now I would be the first one to admit that the graphics and mannerisms need to be improved, but I think they balance this out by having superb voice acting which most games don't. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIolXCBH2Es

More Realistic????? How much more like an exclamation mark can you make the exclamation mark above a quest givers head be?
But seriously, this is NCs big WoW-clone-markIII. Their marketing dept, has deemed that "This art style and play type is what players pay for.".
Yes. Yes yes yes yes.... And Yes. yes, I do. I do, I really do, yes. Yes.
Would certainly cut the WS new threads by about half.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

In the end it wont be GFX that fails this game.
You are talking like if WOW were pioneers of those graphics lmao. Look at a 1080p screenshot of both, wildstar looks way better they just share a stylized style.
Ncsoft already have like 5 MMOS with the same boring and dull graphics like every other MMORPG out there. It would be crazy for them not to try something less exploited.
I'm also sure that many studios lack the courage to go with these graphics because if they are not done right it could very much look like crap. Carbine is doing a really good job with everything art/media wise so far. Also WoW is another orc, warrior blah blah epic story kind of mmo like 100 others out there. At least you need to recognize the effort to come up with something rather creative and of their own. That alone tells me they have talented people working in their studio.
Every "realistic" mmorpg i've played has felt very artificial and plastic. It's sort of like watching an old movie with bad unrealistic special effects if you know what i mean. You can't spend resources on animations and graphics like you could on a FPS game etc. When you create an mmo with a cartoony style you can throw all futile attempts at realism aside.
The marketing, ads, and characters have such character, personality and humor which are what entices me to try the game - not the graphics.
The arty style and graphics they choose are timeless. They age better than games with realistic graphics. At the end of the day we can come up with several handful of games that went with a realistic art style and only a few that really stand out (WoW, GW, Wildstar, etc).
WoW may be approaching a decade but the game still looks damn good compared to some other games -- without being so taxing to the players computer system. A win/win situation to me.
I actually love the style itself. I just think they could be of higher quality. More polygons, etc.
I was envisioning a sort of Ratchet & Clank online, but the graphics in the PS3 Ratchet & Clank games are much better.
Marcus
I totally agree with this statement 100% Ratchet and Clank imo does look better (and has always looked better than Jak and Daxter)
I don't mind a game that doesn't take itself too seriously but I'd like some more serious moments. The graphic engine they are using is cheap, you can tell this by looking at the cutscene videos that preview the races and lore. I'm sure it will be a good thing for those who love it though.
I"m sorry but the look of FFXIV:ARR trounces this, and it isn't realistic either.
Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!

Absolutely not. I guess it's a matter of taste.
Just like me, a lot of people want the universe to be far from real. It's funny, it's not to serious, it's perfect.
It's kinda ironic that people want a feeling of reality in a fantasy game
