XBox One: more lies and shenanigans

ElikalElikal Member UncommonPosts: 7,912

I have the articles only in German, but you should be able to find similar reports in English.

The first one says, that MS again confirmed that not only the games, but the consoles themselves are country bound. Meaning: if you travel, forget taking along your XBox, but more important: if you move to another country, you can buy a new console! That may not be important in America, but in Europe where people can freely move within all countries of the EU, that is a BIG issue.

Article: http://www.rp-online.de/digitales/games/xbox-one-funktionen-im-ausland-beschraenkt-1.3473144

But the real bomb was this:

MS used PCs with Windows 7 and much higher evolved NVidia graphic cards to show the XBox games. Which is a real "joke" for too many reasons:

- apparently the games were shown in a much higher quality, the newspaper claims the games in the show sometimes crashes, showing the Windows 7 PC desktop. The actual card would be a mid class Radeon 7790, while on the PC was a NVidia of the 700 series, a much faster card. (Not to speak of the irony, that Nvidia is the competitor of AMD, who builds parts for the Xbox.)

- also apparently Windows 8 is not the system even Microsoft folks prefer, since all PCs were running with Windows 7 (ha ha!)

Lies and incompetence.

Windows8 isn't compatible with their virtualization software that they were using to run them on the PCs.

Windows8 still isn't compatible with a lot of dev-kit stuff, and I should know (<--Software Engineer).

Windows8 is being ignored by the developer community, and Win7 has essentially taken the spotlight from WinXP as the "preferred OS" for the next X-many years until Win9 or 10 recaptures us.

    :)

ps: They might not be using a virtualization of their console framework. They might have just stripped all the proprietary BS out, and the games themselves may already easily be PC compatible.

I hate you so much Microsoft :(

Well yes Microsoft didn't become billionaires by telling us the truth.

Windows 8 probably uses more resources even when the layer system is off.

The Xbox one is using Radeon and AMD imo it is like night and day, they went for a CHEAP bargain.Intel and Nvidia are much better products for the money.I have tried AMD[using one right now] and Radeon twice and both times pulled Radeon cards out and put back my Nvidia.Intel chips are just  much faster my I3 laptop destroys my PC and that is with an integrated gpu albeit a decent Nvidia one.

The truth is,i cannot stand consoles,i still regret buying the PS3 that has about 12 hours of FF games on it.I doubt i will never buy another console again,i usually just end up extra cash and bored one day and make a stupid choice to buy one.

However IF i was to buy one,no question hands down i would pick PS4 over Xbox1.

To me consoles are really cheap gimmicks to sell you very old hardware. They also become outdated faster than my PC now,i bought the PS3 after this PC lol.

Yea I built my $952 rigg 3years ago, and it STILL smokes the unholy bejesus out of the current PS4's stats which are BETTER than the Xbox-One's stats by a lot.

I still don't see why people are so gullible. :(

I thought they picked AMD because they have the best all-in-one solution (cpu/gpu).

Why would they run a virtualized Xbox One on any platform instead of running an Xbox One to show the games? Shenanigans indeed.

Someone needs to put together a list of all the things Microsoft has messed up in the Xbox One launch.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Really though, they don't get outdated fast... consoles last 7-10 years. I would personally never let my PC get that old. It's really not a fair comparison IMO. I think both have their place and while I am mainly a PC gamer, I am mostly a gamer of all things, so I will get a PS4 as well. Some of the best games of all time have been on consoles and I personally don't want to miss that. I enjoy PC most though :)

They do. But in the PC world you only see that in the low-end of laptops and tablets:

"In comparison to a modern PC, you can probably guess how the Xbox One and PS4 compare. There’s no direct comparison for the 8-core Jaguar CPU — AMD’s own parts based on the Jaguar core, Kabini and Temash, are quad-core parts destined for ultrathins and tablets. From leaked benchmarks, the Jaguar core is around 10% faster than its predecessor (Bobcat). A dual-core Brazos (Bobcat core) about 10 times slower than the latest Ivy Bridge parts, in a very naive comparison. So, all in all, an 8-core Jaguar might manage about half the performance of a current-gen Core i7. The GPU comparison is easier: The Radeon 7790 is a $150 card."

Might the reason most of the demo's that MS were using to 'simulate' the Xbone simply be because PC's are able to render much better graphics overall, and with a higher framerate, and, rather than being limited to just 8gb of ram, they might well have been using systems with 16 gb + of ram,  speaking of which, the Xbone has 8gb of ddr3, of which 3gb is reserved for the OS's so only 5gb can be used for gaming, the PS4 has 8gb of ddr5, of which 1gb is reserved for the OS, and 7gb is used for games, which along with a higher spec'd GPU than the Xbone, might have left MS feeling a bit vulnerable in the graphics department, so 'borrowing' PC's to demonstrate the Xbone games is kind of hillarious, especially as they were using Nvidia GTX  gpu's rather than the Xbones Intel version, huge vote of confidence from MS there in their own system. MS just don't seem to be able to stop digging that hole deeper and wider image

Some console gamers live in heated denial, and need to be constantly bombarded with facts to get the point across sometimes. Even when it has nothing to do with the original point unfortunately.

I live in the netherlands 20 km to the east lies Germany 120 km south lies belgium, so if i would plug my console into the interwebs it wont let me play games ? does it stop using the whole machine oO ?

kinda hilarious they also tried to steal people away from nintendo......saying xbox is far better then nintendo and shoulnt waiste money on that machine......

What on earth are they doing ?
They can also just self destruct tbh, they have caused themselves so much damage past 3 months that the whole world is against them.

But instead of using the repair function they start to kick even harder against their consumers -_-

I wish that they get repayed in kindness and lose 90% of the market share so they can die off and give other more game loving entity's a chanse.
    Ridiculous MS behavior -_-

After the Xbone reveal and E3 i think only losing 90% of the market would be a positive thing, it could very easily be far far worse. That hole MS started digging with Windows 8, and now with the whole Xbone debacle its getting so deep i doubt they can see daylight with a telescope. image

You might be surprised at the number of people who go ahead and buy an Xbone anyway. I don't think sales are going to be good, but I would bet it's in the millions.

About the only place i can see where the Xbone might actually make sales, is NA, what with region locking and the number of countries where the Xbone doesnt even work, but even so, Millions of Xbone sales, are people really that gullible/uninformed? i have trouble believing that. Today the average console gamer is a bit more tech savvy than they were in the days of the 'sega megadrive' and the case against the Xbone is fairly clear cut.  And thats even when you ignore all the privacy issues image

I seriously hope MicroShaft takes a beating on this machine. With their recent screw ups on smart phones, Windows 8 and now this? They seriously think of themselves as bigger than they really are. Which, considering how big they really are, I find the idea of that somewhat staggering.

Anyway, this company needs to start falling on some hard times. Then maybe they can find the motivation to get their finger back on the pulse of their consumer base. Of course, that wouldn't happen without 1st getting billions in relief money from our taxes so they can all keep their 7 and 8 figure bonuses.

While Jaguar cores are only for tablets, laptops, servers, nettops, and embedded systems, AMD also offers Trinity and now Richland with higher performance Piledriver cores.  More, weaker cores beat fewer, stronger cores in programs that scale well to many cores, so weaker Jaguar cores make a ton of sense for game consoles.

One important factor here is that if it's easy to code things to run well or poorly on certain hardware, and you know that all of your customers have that hardware, you can optimize for that particular hardware.  Some algorithms simply don't scale well to 8 CPU cores--but those algorithms tend to be irrelevant to games.  When making games for PC, you usually can't assume that customers have 8 CPU cores, but for Xbox One or PS4, you can.

Also very important is that with the CPU and GPU sharing the same memory pool, there's no real performance penalty for passing data back and forth between them.  In a typical PC, the PCI Express bus can be a real bottleneck.  While most PC games aren't meaningfully bottlenecked by the PCI Express bus, that's because game designers consciously avoid doing things that would have made it into a huge bottleneck.  Will game programmers get a lot of mileage out of the shared memory pool, perhaps by offloading some SIMD-friendly work that isn't purely graphical to the GPU?  It's not clear, but it's plausible that they might.

This is why consoles have an advantage when they release, and why they keep the advantage for awhile longer than comparable or better PC hardware. Developers can code things more efficiently or better for a known hardware platform, and the games will perform better. This isn't the case with PCs. PCs will at some point just brute force their way past the consoles, but it won't be right away.

What does that matter? Most games will still be developed for the largest common denominator, IE: the PS4 and XBone.
