At best it can be a hit with MMO fans but Wow have a lot of players that never even played another MMO.Still, I hope it is good.
They're actually short on programmers. Their main programmer is SKlug from Everquest. No offense to that person but EQ had a hacking program since forever. He's a nice guy, I talked to him a few times, but he can't make this game on his own.
They have 4 openings for programmers for EQNext on the SOE site and they repeat in every video they need programmers.
If anything is going to kill this game it is the lack of decent programmers. Being short on senior programmers should really be worrying so far into the project.
These are their openings for EQNext right now. They don't have a senior generalist, no senior graphics and no senior physics engineer. Most games have those from the start.
The open positions are alarming when you consider that talent generally returns to be part of a winning team. The Chicago Bears won Super Bowl XX because several great players, who were holding out for better offers, came back when they saw the team could win; and they wanted to be a part of that success and history.
BTw, excellent post Mardy.
Except he's 100% wrong. When in development games have several senior personnel if not dozens of them. This is why you see layoffs after development is done in almost all games. During development you NEED multiple of each position if not more after release you need a fraction of that staff.
EQ1 was a niche market played by computer nerds and people with enough expendable income to pay for internet by the minute and buy a voodoo graphics card...
WoW came along and was fortunate enough to only have to compete with the computer nerd game, which might as well have been DnD, because that is the nerd reputation EQ had.
It didnt help that EQ2 was coming out and EQ1 had all but been shut down. (Verrant or SOE or whoever was hinting to EQ players that EQ would be shut down for the move to EQ2, so people were looking to bail and quitting in droves, GoD didn't help either.)
Around 2004 is when affordable broadband internet came on the market.
This is also when basic computers started to have build in 3d acceleration.
Right place right time. Blizzard had no idea the success. They expected 150K and got 10 times that.
Now MMOs are an established market. WoW is trickling down slowly. We are truly going to be in a new age of MMOs much like FPS' are now with many great franchises like Halo, Half Life, Quake, Call of Duty, etc etc. Take your pick they are all great. They all carve out their own niche and have their own mechanics and idiosyncrasies.
I think that, I hope that, SOE took a step back after SWTOR and realized that this was the future and that they had better stake out their claim once again. Nevermind that sandbox was the next big thing, creating, or in EQs case embracing their roots and identity is what is all about.
They have EQ under their belt. The MMO that started it all.
They also have SWG under their belt. Largely considered to be the best sandbox that is not EVE.
They have Forgelight which is gorgeous.
No matter what we get it is going to be amazing and because it is SOE and EQ we can be pretty certain it will be supported and developed for 10 years out.
A fantastic new MMO to invest in for years. I think it is what many of us are looking for.
As far as blowing away the industry?
Titan is at least 5 years out since they moved the majority of the staff and put it on hold.
ESO is pushed back to 2014.
FFXIV is just another grinder MMO like FFXI.
There is a huge window open for people bored with WoW and SWTOR and RIFT and all of the others to have the opportunity take time off and give EQNext a try.
The stars are aligned, SOE just needs to have it done.
Let's give some credit to the staff of this great site we are all on at the moment, and let's say that they are 100% correct. In their own words, what we see in August makes us all 'poop' ourselves in awe.
EQ Next blows us all away and gets tons of pre-orders and launches in the months soon after the reveal in August.
If that is going to be the case, then I would also assume that EQ Next would certainly be that 'WoW killer' so many games have been hyped up to be, but failed miserably at to this point. I mean who would want to still pay WOW when something like this comes along and takes the gaming community by storm?!? I mean even console gamers would be buying copies of EQ Next off the store shelves and it would obviously succeed with flying colors.
So my point...my question rather is in 5 years do we see World of Warcraft 2 (Titan) launching copying the success of EQ Next changes? Blizzard just makes their own little changes and enhancements to EQ Next's brilliant systems? And will there be 400 EQ Next clones over the coming years? Will we be reading in 5 years how EQ Next just surpassed 20 million subscribers? Oh wait, sorry 30 million subscribers because of the 10 million PS4 players, lol.
Is this the next big thing? Is this really the true 'WoW killer'? I know, I know... don't yell at me too much, but I can't help but think this now, even though almost every detail about EQ Next is still a mystery.
But is this game going to be THAT revolutionary in the mmo gaming world? This should definitely be an exiting few months coming up for the mmo community.
I've seen plenty of games hyped to the max here on these forums. But not ever have I seen such hype from the staff of this website. - And THAT my friends is why I truly ask what I do here now. ...Lets give them some credit, after all they have been through all the over hyped disappoints that we have as well. They've seen it all first hand time and time again. And they say this is the game that is gonna blow our minds.
WoW, just WoW... wait a minute. Wow is sooo "2004" *grins*

No, Sony's track record is awful, this is all hype, not even a good attempt at it either.

...time will tell.....Aug 2nd hopefully will answer a lot.
....Being Banned from MMORPG's forums since 2010, for Trolling the Trolls!!!
Any game that advertises itself as a "WoW killer" deserves to fail - and if it is using WoW as a guide to build the game, it certainly won't be a wild success, if it survives at all.
WoW is its own style and no one should be trying to copy it or "be better" in the same vein; you can't out-WoW World of Warcraft! Trying to do that is just limiting yourself to an existing player base, and the true MMOG visionary understands that there are many millions of players that haven't been attracted to the game type because what they are really looking for hasn't been built yet.
As far as the Titan project - I'm given to understand it is going to be more like a(n) "MMOFPS" game, which I think is a good move for them, because WoW devs have never learned what good RP is about. EQ Next and Titan will have little in common, I think. I hope!
As far as EQ Next clones - well, I hope the industry matures enough by then that they realize cloning MMOGs is a bad idea.
Have played: Everquest, Asheron's Call, Horizons, Everquest2, World of Warcraft, Lord of the Rings Online, Warhammer, Age of Conan, Darkfall
Wish I could figure out how to colorize text. Text editor here sucks.

That is news to me. In 1999, EQ was front page news on every gaming site, and I (literally) never heard of other gamers calling EQ players nerds. Pot - kettle.

I spent almost 80 hours a week playing EQ, plus I spent time on affiliated web sites. SOE never hinted at a shut down.

I'm surprised a game which costs $20 mil to launch; which undertook a particularly calculated and brilliant marketing strategy (give it away for free in China), and spent many $millions on advertising; only expectd 150k subs. EQ initially cost, I think, $5 mil, and had virtually no advertising nor marketing strategy.

YES !!!!
Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon. In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit
