The Biggest Thing in MMO Gaming - Guaranteed.

DaranarDaranar Member UncommonPosts: 392

I have been thinking here lately, reading and hearing everything there is about EQN (yes I realize it is very little), this game has been set to be the biggest thing in MMO gaming.   It can't help but be.   With an 8.98 hype rating here on MMORPG, I can't think of a game that has touched that lately (though i'm sure you historians will let me know), and all heads pointed towards SOE and this E3 Best of Show without being shown, we have something massive on our hands.

The only question is, greatest genre defining game in MMO history that will be talked about for ages?   Or biggest flop, setting a new standard for marketing teams to over hype a game?   Which way do you think it will fall?

Either way, this game is set to ROCK the MMO world and nothing will seperate me from my computer and live stream of fanfaire in august...err SOE LIVE (that name change shows how poor SOE's marketing team is, so this has to be real hype for the game!)

If I want a world in which people can purchase success and power with cash, I'll play Real Life. Keep Virtual Worlds Virtual!

Well once we know more you realise that hype score could change for the worse .

The game might be a wow clone with better crafting system  and a foundry for all we know .

    I dunno man.

I was pumped for a few hours myself after reading into this game here.

And as the day has come to an end now, I am already starting to back off my excitement level.

Sure the staff is excited about what they saw and what was promised as of features etc.

But now that I think about it, I look back at just before SOE launched Vanguard.

Vanguard was insanely hyped. A huge, beautiful world where players would carve the world and decide the future of that world, blah blah blah.

I'm pretty sure I remember the videos shown before that game launched being incredible and making Vanguard look nothing short of the best mmo ever! And Vanguard fell flat on it's face and was yet another epic failure in a long line of over-hyped mmo fails over the years.

With that, we got to remember that we know almost nothing at this point. It's so easy for a company as big as Sony to make in impressive video demonstration of an upcoming mmo that makes it look truly awesome.

I think the best video I've ever seen to hype an upcoming mmo was what ArenaNet did hyping Guild Wars 2. How they were gonna change everything about how mmos were made and they were NOT going to make the same old mmo everyone else was making... MAN did that video sell me on Guild Wars 2! And when I bought it and played it the first few hours, I felt just exactly the same way I had with ever other mmo the past several years. The world wasnt 'really' dynamic. Sure a bridge might be blown up, but it would respawn in minutes after you left the quest area. I dunno... even though GW2 has beautiful graphics and is a great game, it just disappointed me that it wasn't nearly as dynamic of a world as what they were promising in their video. I felt 'jipped' even though I KNOW that GW2 is actually a very very good game.

I think EQ Next will be successful however. It will probably have some very clever ideas to add to the mmorpg genre. I'm sure it will be a fun game.

But will it be as big as the hype? Not a chance. I look forward to seeing what it shows us on August 2 for sure. And even more, I look forward to getting my hands on it and giving it a play though. That will tell me much more then any promised features or highlight video.

I got a funny feeling that EQ Next will easily be SOE's most successful mmo game ever, but it will still fall far short of the hype and expectations for it just before it launches.

    Time will tell...

GW2 had over 9 at one point. Also, that rating is made by posters. Posters who don't even know what the whole game is about.

Beyond a few interviews where SOE staff say they like their own game (Duh), I haven't seen any hype really. Even the EQN site is just people talking about their time in EQ.

We the fans are hyping it up and even then we are a very small percent of the gaming community. I'd wager 99% of gamers have no idea what EQN is or would care if they did. EQ/EQ2/Vanguard are old news or never made the paper for most of today's gamers.

The few of us that care will decide for ourselves if it is game changing or not, but only for us. The gaming world isn't going to take notice until people start leaving other games to play EQN and we see Mr. T as an EQ character on TV.

Personally, going with my gut, 17 year online gaming history, and just wishful thinking, believe that EQN will be a big success. I highly doubt it will be WoW successful, but it will bring in and keep enough players to keep it going for years. I'd much rather it have a core of long term dedicated players that make the game fun then hit some magic number of total population.

I used to play MUDs that had less than 50 full time players and we had a blast. The game is what we make of it.

Hype scores are just putting a number on your  fantasy's projections.

As reality impinges, the number goes down....

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

Why are the choices only biggest game ever or total flop. What if, it's just a game.

I agree, we need games that are good enough.  As my baseball coach once said, stop swinging for home runs and aim for getting hits.

For a game that probably still far away from its Alpha stage, sure gets a lot of attention lol. Probably gonna be released in 3-5 years from now, and some people ain't got time fo dat.

its never going to live up to the enormous hype that surrounds it now. for me it is very exiting since EQ was my first mmo and what got me hooked onto the genre, so hopefully it meets my expectations, which isn't as high as the OP that is for sure.

I just want a good MMO and I'm pretty sure SOE can make one because I liked both EQ and EQ2, especially EQ. Over the years I've started to hate grinding quests and dailies and if they manage to avoid these two "features" I'm happy.

Not to put the game down, it could be very good, BUT:

"EQN is the biggest thing to come", and you base that on:

    -SOE CEO twitter hype?

-press being shown some content behind closed doors?

-no trailer, no content, no ingame footage, nothing shown so far

So you jump to those conclusions based solely based on hot air?

Damn, you're one easy person to wheel in or a SOE employee.

    1. New quality triple A MMO announced: Hype jumps to the top

    2. As they release info about the game, a large % of people get upset and make a poop storm on the forums and the hype rating stays high because people are clicking on the game page to yell and cry.

    3. Hype rating drops to a stable rate as people are sick of crying and yelling and just the fans now click on the game page.

    4. Game about to go into beta, all the people who dont like to pay for games jump on the game page for info and the hype rating spikes.

    5. only a small % get into beta so the rest of the beta leatchers stop clicking the game page, hype drops.

    6. Game releases and lots of people check it out and the hype goes through the roof like step 1.

Hype has nothing to do with how good the game is. Any triple A MMO goes down this hype train and its more on why people are clicking the game page then how good the game is.

Yeah, I was begging people not to go off the hype cliff, but they're doing it anyway. So instead, I'm getting my buckets and pails ready for all the incoming tears when the game inevitably fails to live up to the hype.

you are new around here eh?

"planning to be the biggest thing on the mmo market" doesn't help, there have been alot of plans before EQn.

maybe chill down till they are actually ready TO SHOW US something of the game before you totaly overhype it again.

As much as I really want to believe I would have to treat this like any other MMO from the recent past and that is with a spoon of salt. The only thing I can say that stands out the most from the rest is that it is a sandbox that is a major plus in my book being I like to mold my world rather then have someone guide me everystep of the way.

Seeing is believing. I judge news objectively, and of all upcoming MMOs EQN is the only one I know nothing about - at all; therefore I am not intrigued about it and have no expectations whatsoever. A mmorpg.com senior employee coming in and promising "Ya'll gonna poop yourselves come August" is pointless unless he wanted to hype up his own site with more rumors and speculations - like this very same thread here, for example. If this was a community member acting like this, it's one thing. If, on the other hand, you're an official with a respectable source like mmorpg.com, you degrade your business by making such pseudo-groundbreaking statements. Unless, of course, there was a reward involved, which made any potential reputational damage plausible.
  • DraGzielDraGziel Member UncommonPosts: 67
Stop with all this hype already. Don't you understand that the more you expect the less satisfied you will be in the end? How many mmos need to come out in order for you to get that? Geez...
  • Four0SixFour0Six Member UncommonPosts: 1,175

The "Talking Points" do sound good.

I see an issue though, an issue with competition. There isn't any. Blizz has publicly shelved "Titan" for a "reboot", and the general chat is that this will give EQN all the space it needs to shine. I fear the other side of that coin. The side where Smed, andhis devs rest back and say, "What us worry? BLizz is out we got this.". That will lead to a flop.

    GL though,

    406 out.

I think Over Hype threads like this are non-productive.  Don't take me wrong, I've been playing both EQ and EQ2 for about 13 years.  I love the depth and immersion and the community Norrath fosters.  But, let's not count our chickens before they are hatched.

EQN has a fantastic dev team..but it also has Dave Georgeson and Smedley at the helm.  I think enough people (including myself) have gone off on them that I don't need to do that here again.  So, the caveat is that those two are very good at spin and hype.  Never take them at face value and allow yourself to see the product firsthand.

The Hype Meter here is utterly meaningless.  Also, on a contentious note, it has sometimes been suspiciously high for certain games that were freshly released from the gate.  I'm not going to go on further about that.  Point being, its a measure that is only relevant for this site, and it's created by this limited pool of people.  It is not reflective of a global "hype" for any game.

Regarding the staff comments on EQN, as well as any SOE product:  One or more of the writers are good friends with the SOE folk.  If you read the articles without rose-colored glasses their carefully scripted Q & A and glowing praise should be quite evident.  So, again, another biased source of information that you should be highly critical of.

What are we left with?  Not much.  Same as before, really.  Its all a bunch of words floating the air at this point and zero substance until Aug. 2.

I'm hopeful the (bad) example of SW:The Old Republic has put the fear of Tunare into SOE.  They have to know that if EQ:N is a giant stinky egg of a game, it will bring the wrath of Sony onto SOE.

I'm doubtful SOE can walk away from a game that's not good enough.  Blizzard already beat them to that punch, and there will be enormous pressure to take the opening Titan's delay has given them.

In the end, playing is believing.

I'm certain there will be very creative ways to monetize the game.  SoE is pretty good with the whole monetizing thing.  Outside of that, I'm not sure anyone can guarantee anything at this point.
