Normally I don't report on gaming news but in this case I think it needs to be known (apologies if this has already been reported)
http://kotaku.com/dont-update-your-ps3-today-update-firmware-pulled-514213464
According to Kotaku if you update your PS3 to the new firmware there is a chance it could brick the entire system but so as long as you don't accept the update you are fine.
Now in the post it states they are looking into it but it doesn't appear they have a fix yet i'd suggest until they do just don't accept the update at all. Better to wait and let them fix it first. So if you get this update request don't accept it until you get word it's okay.
Note: I did post this in the console gaming section but found out it doesn't update on the main page so I feel it might not get noticed.

James T. Kirk: All she's got isn't good enough! What else ya got?
It appears to be mostly people who have changed their hard drives and then updated and it seems they took it off-line so you may be safe but it still stands if ask for a firmware update it's best not to take it just yet until Sony gives the all clear.
Hopefully the people who did get their system bricked (there were a few) get a new one or a free repair or something, seems only right to me.
One of them better safe then sorry things.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

PM before you report at least or you could just block.
Just turned the power off mine since I got PS+, just so it don't end up updating by itself..
Thanks !
