Anyone who is expecting Everquest 3 (AKA EQ1/EQ2 redone but perfected) are sadly mistaken
We are in for something different in the MMO market, and the praise the game is getting is an indicator of that. This isnt going to be "Oh, nice, a PvE non-pvp game done well" That's already been done several times.
We're in for a different experience. So if you are unwilling to change how you view and play MMOs, you probably will dislike Everquest Next.

Same goes for the traditional PvP offerings we've had dealt with us as well.
The whole every class must be perfectly balanced to be fair one vs. one is probably not going to be in there as well.
Originally posted by Lustmord I'd like to see it start out with Race Based factions, but your actions can earn you a positive reputation with other races like in EQ1.
I think this is probably the strongest possibility. I will go farther and say that Smed said something kind of that backs up what you suggest. Back in October he mentioned bringing EQN back to EQ1 roots. This would accomplish that very nicely.
As posted in another thread here's my idea of how I'd like the PvP to work in EverQuest Next. I've tried my best to respect the lore and the setting as I believe both to be extremely important in how mechanics should be designed.
I'd like to see PvP be tied to your reputation with various factions and races. You kill one of your own kind in cold blood? Expect your reputation with your race to take a huge hit and to be ostracized by your local community. Keep up your murderous behavior and eventually you won't even be let into your own cities anymore. Every choice should come with a consequence. That's what makes it fun.
Killing a good aligned player as an evil troll however would earn you reputation with the evil factions. It would be actively encouraged. The more you killed, the more your peers would come to respect you. The same would go for a good player vanquishing an evil player. For those with no real inclination when it comes to conflict I reckon the neutral races would be a better fit here as players wouldn't really have an incentive to slay you.
You've got all the freedom in the world under this system but you'll also have to deal with the consequences of your actions. I should add that I'm not a believer in hard locked factions. If a player wants to play as a good troll he should be allowed to do just that. It probably wouldn't be the easiest path but the option should be there. The same goes for good players wanting to turn bad. Want to impress the dark elves? Bring them a sack of high elven heads.

7 of the 9 options have PVP in them of some sort.
9 is the only non-pvp option.
Therefore the majority of players that have taken the poll want PVP of some type, whereas only 36.3 % don't.
So 63.7% want pvp of some type and of that type the FFA pvp is the leading choice.
Also you mention it's EQ, and you do know EQ had pvp options? IT wasn't like EQ was strictly PVE only.
common mistake in reading statistics is 'inferral'. you are inferring that if i press any of the 7 options that i want pvp. perhaps i simply agree that there should be a pvp option for those who want it, not because i personally ever pvp.

Final proof and myth of "PvP minority" busted again.
Will say first, Im a huge fan of PvP in any MMO I play. That being said I dont agree with you. If the PvP model they pick is like AA or DAoC or ESO Im game. For another PvPer this would mean a fail as a PvP MMO. If its a FFA PvP model I would not be playing EQN. If the majority of the PvPers who voted picked one option. I would agree. The PvEers won this poll showing PvP better not be in the game or done in way that has little impact on the PvE part of EQN. PvP and PvE should not mix and be done in a area that PvEers need never go.
Final proof and myth of "PvP minority" busted again.
One way of looking at it...
The other way is 35% don't want any PvP at all and the other 65% can't decide of how to have PvP. So do you design for 35% with a confirmed idea of what they want or for the 10-15% of some form of PvP that other PvP'ers will not like...
BTW I don't mind PvP, even FFA PvP as long as I have the tools to protect myself before you jump in and call me a carebear or some other derogatory remark.

And yet a better way to look at it is ...
18% of gamers want EQN to be open world non-consensual PvP
38% of gamers want EQN to not have any PvP at all
56% of gamers want a variation of some type of PvP "OTHER THAN" non-consensual PvP.
I think that pretty much confirms the feeling of most PvEers in that they don't mind some form of PvP so long as it is not forced on them (Ie., non-consensual).
So to sumarise ...
82% of gamers want EQN to have either consensual PvP or no PvP at all.
18% of gamers want EQN to have non-consensual PvP.
I'd call that a landslide of magnanimous proportions.
Personally, posting on this subject is just a matter of entertainment for me. There is no doubt in my mind whatsoever that EQN will be a PvE game with consensual PvP.
If EQN has no open world pvp they damn well better make the PvE difficult. The world should be dangerous and cause you to plan how you are getting from one area to the next. If they make the open world faceroll easy like every mmo released since eq1 it will suck.
Archeage seems to have a good system for both pvp and pve players.

Put that under /Obvious.

Well put but I still think EQN wil have PvP.
