It's comming for the PS4 it will hit 2M.

As soon as we see gameplay the old subs will return and word of mouth will drive it there.

Honestly I would rather have a really good community of 250,000 subs, then an EH community of 2mill+. at leasts thats the sort of trend i have been seeing lately, but we all precieve things different. I think FF11 had around 400k'ish when I was playing 6 years ago.

but really Subs dont always = Quality...and again every game is not for everyone. plus FF14 is some what of a niche game, witch honestly I like that.

I see the "F2P 4 EVER!" brigade is out, doing their usual routine.

Let me see if I can guess what's been said here so far...

    1. P2P sucks

    2. F2P is the future.

    3. ARR will fail if it doesn't go F2P

    4. F2P is the future

    5. ARR will be F2P in a year or less

    6. F2P is the future

    7. I shouldn't have to pay a sub for a game because it's not worth my money

    8. F2P is the future.

    Did I miss anything?

FFXIV will be fine. SE is committed to sticking with P2P. They are in the rare position of being the Developer and the Publisher and the Distributor. They don't have outside investors to answer to. They don't have an outside Publisher giving them milestones and dangling development checks over their heads. No other MMO developer would have even attempted something like what SE has done with ARR, on the scale that they have. That should tell you something. They are in an enviable position; one that gives them the leverage to do what they're doing; one that can not be judged in the same way most every other developer is.

Yoshi-P has already stated their plan to maintain P2P, and has explained why they can do so for the foreseeable future, due to their rather unique, or at least rare situation in the industry.

P2P with consistent monthly subs was the preferred revenue model for TOR, for Rift and for several others. They only switched to F2P after their game failed to gain and keep enough interest from players. And even in their switch, they've maintained a subscription option. They haven't completely omitted it. In some cases, the restrictions on free accounts are such that you can see they're plainly trying to compel people to get a subscription anyway.

It should tell you something that, even with F2P as an option, so many MMO developers opted to initially design, build and launch their games around a P2P model. Why do you think they chose P2P over F2P out of the gate, if F2P is supposedly  the better option, or "The Future" as so many love to claim? Why would a developer choose a model - as recently as within the last year - which so many people want to argue is "archaic and out-dated"? Don't give a knee-jerk response. Really think about that. Ya think maybe there's something to this P2P/Subscription-based setup that is preferable for them, than the F2P/Cash Shop approach? I'd say that's a good place to start...

Also consider that other MMOs that launched as P2P and maintained a healthy enough playerbase to keep it that way, remain P2P, even after 10+ years in some cases. Again... that should tell you something.

People claiming that F2P is the future and P2P is "going away" are pipe-dreaming.

At the end of the day, if a game is fun enough to people, they will pay a sub for it. It has been proven, it is proven and it will continue to be proven.

The "F2P For Life!" crowd really needs to just enjoy the games they have to choose from, and be satisfied. Which also raises a question... with so many F2P options already out there to choose from, why are you "F2P For Life!" folks so  angered when you see even a single new MMO coming out with a sub? Afraid it might succeed and undermine all you've been arguing? Well, I can sorta help you with that... Your arguments have never had merit to begin with, and were undermined from the get-go.

Subs don't cause games to fail. Poor design causes games to fail. Successful MMOs with subs stick with subs. Failing MMOs with subs switch to F2P/Cash Shop. Again... something to think about.

With PC 1.5 million at launch, 400-500k annual after first six months which square-enix has said it is "fine with", but considering this will also be on PS3/4 then take those numbers and double or quadruple them and you will see how this is probably gonna work really, really well as that would equate to anywhere from 1-2 million+ annual subscribers as a base low estimation "not bad".

Consoles are in sore need of a quality MMO and I can see people eating this one up.

Yup. And yeah next gen consoles will get mmos. But. Not classical ones. Most of them are action hybrid mmos.

There really is very little competition on consoles in this regard. Not to mention the controls for pad they are using are really good.

lol, I'm team p2p I guess and said < 1m.  I think it will probably get 200k or so globally as a safe guess (hope for more though :P).

There is absolutely no way this game will come close to one million active subs a year out; very few games do. I'll be extremely surprised if it breaks 500k as P2P. I'll be less surprised if it breaks 350k, but I have doubts. Nobody really knows how much money they have funneled into this project, so maybe ~350k subs would be financially successful. My one year prediction is that the game will offer F2P by then.

FF14 as everyone said will not go F2P, its just not going to happen. FF11 did not, and they got down to about  60-150k something close to that. Just that simple {in a non rude tone} :) /bow

Well FFXI is still P2P right ? So I don't think they'll make FFXIV F2P any time soon... but I don't think it'll get over a million subs. Probably something like 350-400k including Asia.

I mean... even with 50k subs, it's still $650 000 every month, enough to pay a few devs and PR people + the server... and still have enough money for the investors to be happy no ?
