Am I allowed to discuss a technical problem I have in beta?

superpatasuperpata Member UncommonPosts: 190
Hello everyone, well I am having an issue, tried to post it on the official forums but the feedback from other members is slow at the moment. Am i allowed to ask for advice here?: ) or would that break the limited NDA?

Yes as of Phase 3 you can discuss the game and show pictures but no videos.

Ok here is the problem, in certain places when I move the camera even if just a tiny bit, my fps plummet. This does not happen in other games or even in many zones in this game either. I also do not experience fps drop if I am walking or strafing.

Here are two pictures that show the issue (I am inside Coral Tower, marauder's guild if anyone wants to try):

notice the fps drop in the system window

Lots of games have this problem, even gw2 has it on occasion!

It seems to be a bug while rendering in certain places once I stop moving the camera fps goes back to normal. In a normal place doing this only lowers my fps by 2 or so, here it is a massive 14 fps. I was wondering if I could solve this, but I guess it is game related. Could try the new beta drivers but I am having no faith:P

PS: Lowering the graphics to standard does not solve the issue at all either, my card vram is also far from reaching its limit and I have 8gb of ram.

whats your cpu specs? Most MMOs are CPU bound.

SWTOR had this exact issue in a couple areas.  You have to wait for them to optimize that area, broken code/memory leaks/or something like that.  Report it and they will get to it.

Adaptive PCI-E power management or Vsync being enabled/forced/adaptive may cause this issue in some games. It may not apply to you but change these settings for your video card to see if it resolves the issue.

whats your normal fps? and are you runnign vsync and fullscreen mode

Hey again, thanks for all replies I will try to look at some of the things suggested here.

Vsync was disabled, made sure of that

Normal fps is around 30+ (not sure outside the city though, prolly higher). I scored 2,7k (fairly high) in the benchmark with maximum settings. In game I am not using the maximum settings.

Cpu is not very fast, but has not been an issue in other mmos even filled with 20+players, i7 720QM.

The issue seems to be present mostly in some areas in Limsa Lominsa, but I will play more and report back when I have more info. Again thank you all.

You do know the game is running debug programming during beta phases? This can cause more load.

you could try disabling the hyper threading abit on that i7

I will try to force the game to use 4 cores, maybe that will kill the 4 other vitual threads. There is no bios option to directly kill hyperthreading.
  • superpatasuperpata Member UncommonPosts: 190

So far running with one or two cores reduces the framerate, running with 4 or "8" holds the same framerate. In any case I experience the same issue, that is, no matter how many cores are runnng the framerate still drops a lot when I just turn around slightly.

Here are two screens showing strafing, which does not compromise the framerate.

I will go outside now and report if those zones also have issues:)

Why would you disable occlusion?  It's a nice performance increase for zero impact on graphical quality.  I don't even understand why they have the option to disable it.

I read the tooltip and it says "disable rendering of objects when not visible"  So leaving  it on disable seems to enable the occlusion? That is how I interpret it becaus in max settings that option is not selected by default, while in high it is.

I think so, I mean only 2 threads were running when I set my affinity correctly, but other than that I can't access the bios hyperthreading.

I am testing the game outside and the "bug" does not happen at all! it is always running 28 or more fps!

    Whoops, you're right.  I can't read.
