So maybe this explains why this site didn't even have a game section for this game for so long.

The press loved what they saw but couldn't reveal any detail - this created a huge hype train free marketing for SoE and EQN.

    Perfectly executed.

There is no better way to hype people up than let their own imagination go crazy, if they gave us details the speculation wouldn't exist.

So the secret sauce is to not give out any solid details that could be scrutinized, I know it happens eventually but better have a hype train drive the masses crazy first.

Pretty much this.  Before the Tentonhammer and MMORPG.com best of E3 awards it was given EQNext hardly had any activity going.  Now when I come to the site the homepage almost always has 2 or 3 of the most recent comments EQNext related.

Considering this site didn't even have an EQ Next section until very recently, of course people want to talk about it knowing that the reveal is close.

All I know is Bill Murphey said this .......

Say what? You thought this one wasn’t at E3? Well, really... it wasn’t in any official capacity. But we were treated to an early look at what SOE has planned for the game’s unveiling in August and we were quite simply blown away by every little detail we saw. This is going to sound like a cop-out, but we can't say why we are choosing EQN as our Best of Show because we've been sworn to secrecy until the big debut in August. What we can say is that we saw grand plans for the world's largest sandbox and it was more than enough to stand head and shoulders above any game we saw at E3. When Sony pulls back the curtain later this summer, you will not be disappointed. EverQuest Next is this year's E3 Best of Show, and in just a couple months you'll all understand why. We promise.

The above paragraph certainly raised my eyebrow.  Coming from Bill, who seems to be pretty level headed when it comes to gaming, this is enough to at least pay attention.  I'm looking forward to the 8/3 and will come here after work to see whats up.

Blank slate or not ............. that's it.

Think of it as a sandbox MUD!

    SO revolutionary and innovative!

Lol, this forum is EQ Next!

There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

The first thing to realize is we know nothing about the game, other than it's EQ and they are going for a sandbox approach.

That alone makes me want to play it. I've played EQ1, EQ2, Vanguard, and SWG. Even if the game blows goats, I'll still play it just to see the lore from the original games and how it was changed or flipped to match this new installation.

Hell, even now, I've been spending my last few months running through Vanguard and EQ2 just seeing how similar the games are to EQ1. Lore from EQ2 and updated mechanics from Vanguard. I can speculate all I want about how the game is, but in the end, I realize we know nothing about EQNext.

The forums game here is just fun to watch as people throw wild expectations in random directions. Some days you can just refresh the page and see what new person is making the next assumption, I get a nice laugh on those days.

the hype seems to be largely about the delusion that SOE is going to change their flagship into a gankfest.

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already :)

There are alot of people expecting the ultimate mmo ever made in the history of mankind.
They all jump on that massive hype train right into the abys and when they start seeing wtf is happening boom they alreadyhave that moneh.

FF ARR - good mmo - worth playing
Wildstar - seems ok - worth playing
Elder scroll Online - seems ok - worth playing
EQN - havent seen anything - cant comment - but i dont have my hope up to much with SoE tough.
But iam always up for suprise sex ^^

I realy hope we can get to play a damn fine mmo with SUPER DUPER AWMAWGAWD XFactor, reality is that we have seen so much lately, and nothing seem to fill our needs longer then a few months at best.

OP is right we know nothing - its fully blank - its SoE - wait and see - dont start fapping to early.
Lets wait and see what is behind the mountain.

If you're still interested in themeparks, then yep, they're worth playing. I've been tired of themeparks for years though.

As for Mr. Murphy, he has to solicit advertising revenue somehow...

pot .. kettle .. if 1/2 the threads around here weren't dismissing pve/pvp servers I wouldnt care. God forbid the pve crowd doesn't have to deal with getting ganked by 5 ??s and then corpse camped

and ive played a stunlocking rogue. I don't find pvp outside of battlegrounds interesting in the least except the rare occasion where 2 opposing players of a similar level meet while going about their normal routine. 95% of the time it's about numbers. number of people or number of levels. not interesting.

Just like they were blown out of the water with their Neverwinter live stream and then do a 360.  I'm sure we can find similar reviews on SWTOR.

NO ONE is going to say anything negative about the game that was conducted behind close curtains as that is going to blacklist a group from future games.  Every game all these "reviewers" chime the same thing over and over and over again.

EVERYTHING is pure and utter speculation of desires and wishes and on Aug 2nd the forums will be flooded with the nerd rage QQ threads.

This story that keeps getting told about getting ganked and corpse camped for hours, it's not common. It's a story that gets told around the carebear camp fire and the villain is exaggerated with each telling.

I want to make clear however, I am not a fan of FFA pvp. Not because I am scared of getting ganked, who cares really.

I don't like FFA pvp because in my opinion *When pvp can happen anywhere, IT DOES. And then it happens no where in particular". In other words, FFA pvp dilutes the pvp.

DAOC did it best ---- as in "Hey guys, thats the war field over there. Go kill each other  OVER THERE----------->"

No one can complain that they were ganked, they put themselves in an area that everyone knows, that's why you are there.

The best was when we had a couple of geniuses running around claiming open world pvp. Obviously, not a former player lol

Speaking of geniuses, Smedley intentionally promoted that idea.

Not a former player, ....hmm yeah, I dont see how that even comes into it.

What's the title, oh yeah Everquest NEXT

It's 99% people projecting their desires and 1% vague tweets by random developers.  Just your average out of control hype train.  More info will be revealed on August 2nd.

There needs to be a really good quality sandbox game to be interesting now.

The old Sandbox Ultima Online is dated graphics and hurts the eyes.

Then there was Darkfall and Mortal Online. Both fell short since they were indie companies.

Now there are at least 3 on the horizon.

--EQ Next----Possibly THE one the rule them all....but Aug 2 will know more.

RIchard Garriot's next MMORPG ----Avatar:Shroud of Virtue---still not enough known about this one but have some hopes.

And Trion porting over the game --Arch Age---which looks like a winner if the other two are not good.

  • DocBrodyDocBrody Member UncommonPosts: 1,926

If it does not have non consensual PvAll, it's not a sandbox.

    If it's not a sandbox, I won't play it.

No more hype for me until I know exactly what to expect.

Sandbox means different things to different people. SoE will not force PVP, that would piss off more than half of their player base, so we're fine.
