I will defend your right to wish I get cancer whenever you like to.
It isn't a crime, like shooting people or taking their purse.
It is words. Or wishes. They can be nasty, immoral, naughty and something you shouldn't do.
But noone should be in jail for something they wrote or said or wished for, be it on the internet or anywhere else.

I think that a lot of people are missing the "If convicted" part of the article. He never did commit a crime. It's obvious that he didn't conspire to commit a crime either. I doubt he'll get convicted, really. His father should just get an average lawyer and there shouldn't be any problems.
Atleast that'd be the case in EU. You can arrest the kid if you suspect he was planning to commit the crime, but you can't convict him until afterwards.

It wouldn't have surprised me if it happened in Canada, given their petty hate speach laws.
I used to have much more faith in the USA when it came to protecting individual freedoms, untill they lost the war on terrorism, that is.
Now they are pissing themselves of fear, and they gladly give up one personal freedom after the other, just to please the nasty terrorists who scare them so much.

You should not say your going to "shoot up a school" even in jest. Glad to see a little accountability for things being said on line. All though be it very very extreme on the part of Texas, accountability non the less.
Perhaps this will get maybe just a few people to think about what they say when they are gaming.
Let's start with the fact that it was the Father who said his next lines were LOL and JK. The person on the other end of this thought his threat was bad enough to call it in.
He has been sitting in jail this long, which tells me there has to be more to this than this one sided article is telling us.
He isn't Serving 8 years, He could get up to 8 years IF convicted.
Let's face it, what if it wasn't a joke and he followed through with the actions, then everyone would be up in arms because no one took it seriously.
I reserve judgment till all the facts of BOTH sides come out. This is a VERY one sided article made to stir up a reaction.
This cannot be true. There is no law in any country that can justify keeping man in jail for this?
He didnt treathen anyone in peticular (that is forbidden by law).
And if authorityes see him as treath. They can just give him psyhiatric evaluation and forbid him carrying weapons.

that's not the first time a person got "punished" for something he wrote online. the most "players" think: internet = anonymous... but thats not right. when someone threatens you in a game you can take logs and screenshots to a lawyer . it would take some month but the "threatener" will get punished if it is "hard" enough. just think about it when you guys threaten someone via internet..
btw.. someone on facebook with a false name got arrested because of racial slur...

Duct tape and an attitude adjustment would work for ya just as well. Maybe a different planet where you don't worry about conscience or living responsibly.
I've never had faith in that country lol, bunch of hypocrites imo but that another subject.
i dont know the laws in other countries but here in germany threatening, harassement and insulting is a crime and can be punished. but the most people here dont know it and dont do anything against it.. doesnt matter if it is in real life or online
There HAS to be more to this. This is a one sided article.
This kid had to be viewed as a real threat to be held this long. there is No other answer.
And he doesn't have to name his Victims. there has to be a threat, and evidence to back it up. there has to be more than what is being said.
? I know I can't be the only one that thinks the people in this country have snapped. Eight years for just saying some something? First, what happed to the freedom of speech? Is it now just selective freedom of speech? If so, does anyone have a list of the words and/or phrases that can't be used. Second, The same people that are upset with these words and/or phrases, I'm sure - has used them, themselves in the past as well.
