I've tested out all of the classes to lvl 10 but for a variety of reasons have come to love my Nightelf Hunter and his pet bear Bob. I just have a few questions relating to the class:
1) I've reached lvl 20 and Ashenvale seems deserted.... should I head elsewhere to find company?
2) When I reach the higher levels should I expect to have problems getting into raids?
3) I've been very successful in one on one PvP due mostly to reading up on tactics posted in the message boards but I haven't seen much on what a Hunter can do in large scale PvP battles. Is this going to be an aspect where I will find myself wanting?
Comments
1. solo, thats all hunters do, they dont raid and they dont group. inless your that way, but you can solo elites 1-2 levels higher than you, so quests are easy.
2. yes, your like the rogue, no body wants you. MC you can get into, but MC is only one out of many. the hunter is a penalty to groups due to its pet.
3. hunter is alright at one on one. but large scale pvp you do little dps to one target, no aoe's (that are good).
I disagree
Hunters are very usefull in large scale battles. they do decent damage, and can be a nightmare for stealthers with Detect Hidden, Traps (great for caster protection) and Hunters Mark, which basically takes a stealther completely out of the running.
1) The higher the zone level you reach, the less people you'll find there. After coming from the Auberdine area, everything will feel rather empty. You really need to use the looking for group or general channels to find groups.
2) As of right now, perhaps. Just learn how to play your class well, and hopefully your reputation will preceed you. Problem is there are a LOT of hunters that are idiots. They don't realize that leaving a pet on aggressive while entering an instance isn't a good idea, for example. By the time you hit 60 though, hunters could be buffed up and some other class could be nerfed. Such is the way of MMOs. I say just play what you enjoy.
3) Roles in large scale PvP battles are blurry anyway. Just experiment with your class and see where you fit in.
My main is a NE Hunter level 43, and i have to say that hunters are awesome. Not the most powerful class but they rock.
My answers to your questions below:
"1) I've reached lvl 20 and Ashenvale seems deserted.... should I head elsewhere to find company?"
A/ Ashenvale looks deserted for alliance because horde is always raiding Astranaar. Also you have to have in mind that usually the horde that starts working in ashenvale is level 30 and up but the alliance people is coming from Auberdine and they are level 18 and up..so there is a huge difference there between groups there. Alliance people questing in Ashenvale is very cautioned and try to stay always under cover. IMO that is why you dont see people.
On the other hand, if you dont want to quest in ashenvale, you can go to Westfall (west of SW) good place to level up too at that level.
"2) When I reach the higher levels should I expect to have problems getting into raids?"
A/ On the contraire!! You will be one of the most sought classes when raiding, and the reason is because of the specc on marksmanship. You will be one of the few able to take down foes without getting touched in combat. If someone says that you are not needed in raids...man, then do not group with that person.
"3) I've been very successful in one on one PvP due mostly to reading up on tactics posted in the message boards but I haven't seen much on what a Hunter can do in large scale PvP battles. Is this going to be an aspect where I will find myself wanting?"
A/ Same as above.
I heard a lot of hunters not wanted in groups, i have not had that problem my self but i must concede that some hunters are bad players. That is why people sometimes do not like them. But that is not related to the class itself but the way it is played. If a player cant control his/her char...how can u expect them to control also the pet??? Controlling your pet is almost like controlling two chars at once, and that requires practice.
Hunters are a very powerful and usefull class as long as they are well played!! We have so many options that require so many hours of practice and dedication that if you do not train, you will be dead or will be aggroing all the mob at once...which is what people do not like.
I love being a hunter, we have some weaknesses and we have been nerfed a lot!! but what the hell....as someone said before: Play your char to enjoy and to have fun. That the idea of a game..right?
Wow! Great responses thanks for the advice all. Just one more question:
I have the engineering profession. Should I go with guns or bows?
I guess you should try both. Although, as an engineer you can craft your own ammunition (which usually is better than the one you can buy at the vendors).
I dont know for sure 'cause i am not an engineer.
Just some clarification from a Hunter, about pet and groups... Yes, groups hate inexperienced Hunters that go with their pet like its a solo job... But any Hunter having the pet on passive and only throwing it out when aggro gets out of control, manually telling it what and when to attack, otherwise having it on a tight leash... Is a priest saver and one of the best crowd controllers out there. We have walked through dungeon after dungeon, two rogue, one druid and one Hunter, and so far NO aggro has been able to wipe us (One accidental death away from no deaths at all), no matter if we meet two or six aggro at once. Because the pet is the best tank there is IF CONTROLLED, easilly holding the aggro of two or three enemies at once, Hunter shooting at one himself, and letting the Rogues do their work on the remaining two.
There is tactics and lots of skill to playing a group Hunter. The line is so thin between being a crowd Controller and a crowd Creator. But "Passive" is the first, very big step.
Unfortunatly... Most hunters picked it because it is a good solo class, and refuse to learn any other way to fight... So.. groups suffer, and Hunters get a bad rep. In my eyes, a bad Hunter is about the same as a Shadow Priest that burn his mana on the first attack, and has nothing left for healing.
It does not mean that Shadow priests are bad.... Just the players.

Sorry, I do not dabble in arguments pulled from thin air.. So I stick to my side of the subject, that Hunter is viable if played right.. and you go with your... uhm.. ideas.

Which FF Character Are You?
I currently use a bow but I am going to switch to guns once I get my Engineering skill higher. As for going to melee side by side with your pet: It is doable but your dps would be laughable. The hunter is meant to be a ranged fighter and melee is only to be used only when absolutely necessary. Go with a warrior, rogue, or paladin if you want to get up in your adversaries face.
Another question to the more experianced hunters out there:
Is it worth throwing a few points into beast mastery to get my aspect of the hawk bonus higher?
I really suggest you don't play a hunter if you don't like ranged combat. A hunter is all about bows and guns....
Don't fight for the victory, fight for the fight !
if you play as melee you have your own talent branch! its so good. guess what the 31 point skill is?
a 133 damage bleed. 21 seconds i think. i have seen the math and its about 6-8 dps. i dont think blizzard thought about it when they put that one in.
but every level 60 hunter knows that level 60 elites kill the pet in around 10-15 seconds (depending on what the animal is) just go read the hunter forums.
Yes the forums... Its also the place where Shaman and Rogues scream about that they need some upgrades because most their skills are useless... Using the WoW forum as an example is exactly why I say "arguments pulled from thin air". That I play a highlevel hunter and like it... does not mean I lie or am wrong. Anyway, I will leave you to... being you... Its not my problem.

You definitely want 5 points in aspect of the hawk, then dump all your points into marksmanship til you get trueshot aura, last 10 points should go to survival, get the wing clip stun option.
Always upgrade your bear at lvl 10, 20, 40 etc to get the next claw upgrade, don't think there are any bears between 29-41 so just keep the 20 something bear til you can tame one in Feralas at 41. Remember to always train the highest lvl of growl when possible for best agro control.
If you're an engineer hunter, might as well use guns since there are recipes for some nice guns and you will have access to better ammo at certain stages.
No point in being a hunter if you don't like ranged combat, hunters that try and melee most of the time are foolish.

My advice as a high level Hunter is match your talent points to your play style. My Hunter is condsidered Marksmanship speced because I have the most points in the Marksmanship tree. But I do have a fair amount in Beastmastery also. My reason was to buff my pet up some. I like having the extra HPs for my pet, it may not be much more but every little bit helps. I'm not saying this is the best build. It is just the build that works for me. Because I spent my points to match the way I play my Hunter.
As stated by other people if you want to melee then play a warrior, rogue or pally. Most high end groups will not want to play with you if you do that. A Hunter does the best damage with a ranged weapon. Most of the time our role in a group is to protect the Priests and Mages. Which is kinda hard to do you you are up front fighting. You will make a few browny points with cloth wearers when you take aggro from them before they yell out for it.
Most raid level dungeans a pet will not last long. L60+ elites will chew through a pets HP pretty quick. But that may change in the future with the pet customization the Blizz is working on.

I to am very found of my hunter, lvl 29 now, just started on hellscream.
Point is that well played a Hunter is the ultimate security blanket, they can keep a steady flow of incoming mobs with little or no adds. Pulling large social groups apart that would otherwise be impossible to handle.
I have done my research and most experienced players see the value of the hunter in instances, there is a great thread somewere on the role of the hunter, I just can not seem to find it now, i shall look further.
Couple of pointers.
Keep the pet on passive in crowded areas, it will not attack anything then even if you are attacked, send it in if needed, pet running of to attack a ragned mob and pulling the entire zone is why Hunters have a bad rep, it should only go were you tell it.
I myself have gone the beast mastery route as of now, However I do plan to change that to markman in the late 40s prolly, were the pet becomes less useful.
A lvl 30 turtle with the armor talents have a bit over 2k armor.
My cat have 23DPS, I have about 50 or so with hawk and mark, thats not adding traps and stings and specials. Thats quite a healthy amount of DPS, prolly reaching the 100+dps area, not sure what others have but in any group I seem to draw a lot of mob attention.
I have 60 Honorable kills in about 2 hours worth of PvP all in all, no way to compare that to others but seems a bit to me at least.
