I have a huge fear that f2p will ruin EQN like it did eq2 and eq1, and literally every other f2p I've seen. I have not enjoyed a single f2p game because the games are so shallow, and anytime you need to do anything important you have to pay. You usually end up paying more than a sub, especially with multiple characters. What are some good f2p? Because the ones I've played and seen are just so boring after the first week. How can EQN do any better?
Comments
i pay a sub to every game i play that has a F2P model, unless its truly F2P, which none of them are.
i refuse to play a gimped version of any mmo i am playing unless its just to try it out.
but, i do realize there are people that will only play free games and wont play this unless its free.
so i see it as a good thing for the overall health of the community.
The payment model is usually the reason it's a crappy game in this case. EQ1 and 2 were great but when they switched to f2p, if you weren't subbed it was awful. If EQN starts out that way, the majority of people will not pay the sub because they don't have to, they wont enjoy it, and they'll leave. What makes MMOs great is the MASSIVELY part. If everyone's gone it's not nearly as fun imo
Rainbow tinted glasses...........
That is the kind of headgear I think you might be wearing here.
Basically you are saying that because something goes free to play it goes bad?
Everquest is still Everquest. You can still level a character or two up. Want more chars? Pay a one time fee...etc
PLay Neverwinter. It's a fun Free to play. Play Guildwars 2. Another free to play that is good. Sure worth more than a few months play time at least.
Want sandbox crazy business....EQ Next or Arch Age are just around the corner. Nuff Said.
Wait. You're upset that whenever you have to do something "important", you have to pay, but you don't want the game to go F2P. If the game wasn't F2P, you'd have to pay for the "important" stuff anyway.
Most F2P games I've seen are games that transitioned from being P2P to being F2P. The payment model didn't make the games boring after the first week, the games were just boring after the first week.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
I guess you haven't played a F2P since a long time because I didn't see a F2P where you need to pay to do anything important in a long long time. We aren't in 2000 anymore, F2P have evolved a lot. Those who still made you pay for content turned F2P a long time ago and they didn't bother to change their model since their playerbase are already subbed to the game or are ok with the cash shop.
Also, if you end up paying more than a sub in a F2P, either :
a) the model is really greedy (something I haven't seen in a long time)
b) you're stupid enough to spend enormous amount of cash on stuff that isn't essential and won't affect your whole experience whatsoever
c) you don't want to play the game and buy everything in the cash shop to make you gear up or level up faster
d) you're stupid and you didn't notice that you can sub to the game and make the cash shop completely useless most of the time
So no, F2P can't ruin this game. And even if the F2P model is more greedy that what we usually see, if the game is worth it, most people will just sub to the game and won't care about the F2P option.
It most certainly will because there is no such thing as free,it will have systems built into the game that cater to cash shop. What really bothers me is developers are becoming even more greedy, they might have a sub fee then still tack on cash shop, meaning your sub fee is nothing more than full bag space and full character slots, you want the whole game you still need to pay extra on top of that.
IMO F2p is a gimmick to get more money out of the spenders. You are never going to get blood from a stone, those that can't pay ,won't pay.SOE has PROVEN it is all out cash shop,so even if NEXT has a sub fee,you will not have access to all the content.SOE already made sure housing is a cash shop ideal, that alone is a bad decision, one of just greed,i expect more and even worse in NEXT,like possibly having to pay extra for certain locations.
FFXIV will eventually have housing and a garden similar to Archeage, but i guarantee 99% they will not have any form of cash shop. One straight sub fee and that is it,no hidden costs. That is the way it should be,i don't care if SOE feels it needs 25 bucks a month,i am ok with that, just don't be giving me any hidden costs.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
You and anyone else that dislikes F2P are welcome to your opinion. Knowing that SoE is a F2P company, why the hell are you paying any attention to EQN if you dislike F2P so much? Do you just want to complain, just to complain?
The way you and others state things about F2P, it seems you believe what you're saying is factual and not just opinion. Which is ridiculous.
Lets see. 40% increase in daily logins since going f2p. 300% increase in new players. Yep F2P ruined EQ2 lol.
Both games have seen more players since f2p so your assumption that it ruined the games is in the minority.
Also seriously all classe, all races, no coin limit, no bag limit, no bank limit, no trade, chat, guild, zone limits.
The latest expansion allows you to wear tier 1 raid gear without paying 1 cent.
SOEs F2P model for EQ, EQ2, Vanguard are some of the best in the business period.
They do have to make money after all do they not ? You want something for free but want the company to make nothing you wont have a good game that way.
I think they're trying to say that F2P ruins games in their opinion, which is not how they make it sound. Unless they think an increase in profit, players, etc. since switching to F2P is considered ruined.
Tell that to gpotato and the game Allods. There was so much buzz for that game until they added that death debuff and the recovery item to the cash shop.
The real question isn't will, but when will it kill this game. Unless they build this cash shop game completely opposite of what they normally do it is only a matter of time. I suspect the cash shop won't even be beta tested, and there will be zero information about the items until release.

If SOE's approach to PS2 is any indication, it will have an impact.
Expect to see lots of game updates that are primarily full of "content" they can sell you. Expect to see lots of versions of XP boosts. Expect to see new items/spells/skills added to the game that are immediately OP - to draw in the $$$ - then you'll see them nerfed back to normalcy.

I think it's a matter of how they apply a f2p business model. How much time(and therefor money) is required to create the assets/systems involved. Obviously the more intricacies involved in the coding, the more they need to be paid. In the past, novelty levels were high, and subscriptions were forthcoming. But now they aren't. And f2p models are susceptible to many problems, including what you see epitomized by companies like PWE. The corruption of the economic system. The line between f2p and p2w is easily crossed over time(if not from the start). I don't have the information to say whether SOE will do EQ Next right or not. It's not a simple task, but neither is designing the systems involved in a sustainably interesting game that can compete.
hard to say!so far the most acceptable model that people are willing to live with is gw model of payment!lol also seems to do well
who knows ,maybe soe will come up with a nice system!
Whats going to ruin this game is the fact that is sitting at the top of the hype meter right now, and it shouldn't be. The more people talk about a game that is so far from being released, cause people to create expectations they have no right in having. When people do that, they have no clue that expectations are the seeds of resentment. Resentments are what leads to bitter gamers consistantly whining about everything something should have been.
The amount of resentment that floats around our beloved mmorpg.com is crazy. I almost think gamers ruin games before they come out....haha.
EQN is in a black box as SoE has stated a number of times, which means they are not sharing any information about the game because they want to be closer to release before tipping off their competitors. Could the game be a year off? Maybe, but there would be absolutely no point to say that the game is in a black box because they don't want to tip off their competitors, and then release the game a year+ later.
I don`t know if anything is going to ruin EQN, but the freemium is going to anger a lot of people who don`t know about SOEs fremmium+subscription model. I`am a Eq player myself and i have played Eq2 from the beginning. I still play it here and there and i`am really disappointed with the freemium system. And i will name some of the problems that are associated with SOE-freemium:
1) You have to get a sub to play the game, so SC is a bad addition ( to get more money ) to a subscription model. It was not intendet to be for the F2P dudes. With SC you cant buy enough Brokerslots ( with shinys you need hundreds) to get your broker stuff in, you cant send messages etc.
2) In Eq2 you can upgrade your spells/combat arts with Station Cash. Which is such a economy breaker. Master Spells/Ad3 are less worth than before!
3) Flying Mounts can be obtained without the one week quest instantly with lvl 85. And guess what SOE is selling so much in the cash shop..
4) Selfrez, heals, porter etc. damage the gameplay.
5) Even your gear can be repaired with SC
6) Lots of housing stuff and houses are just available in the SC market..
*Station Cash = SOEs virtual currency
So what do you think? Will SOE continue the give me your money and shut up strategie? Maybe i`am wrong, the time will show what SOE has got to offer.
