I got a key, but...

PieRadPieRad Member Posts: 1,108

I signed up for beta a couple of weeks ago, and got a beta key in my email yesterday, the email do not say anything about when this key is good for, is it good for 1 beta weekend, all beta weekends? or full time until open beta/launch?

Haven't really followed the game, and had actually planned to give my key away, but seeing some of these "SO GOOD!" threads, made me want to see for myself.

You should be good for all phases. I got a key for phase 2 and was able to play in 3!

There are a few anti FFXIV threads as well, so don't go in expecting it to be the game of all games.

It's traditional and tab target.  It never hid this fact, never tried to hide it.  Though at the same time it in it's core is Final Fantasy.  It also has a lot of twists such as the Armory System and being able to level every class and profession in the game on one character (and use almost any ability from another class on your favorite class to mix things up).

I'd suggest going to my thread "The Beginners Guide to A Realm Reborn".

"There is no game in existence that is suited for everyone, but what FFXIV ARR aims to do, it does extremely well.  That said, the most important thing to remember is that it is Final Fantasy at it's core."

In closing, if you go in to play the game just because you hear a lot of praise, then you might be hyper sensitive to it's faults.  The first ten levels are fairly boring to a lot of people, there is a lot of reading (it is Final Fantasy after all), and most systems don't even start to unlock until around level 15 (you don't even meet your first villain until a level 10 quest).

That aside, it all improves slowly over time, and you really get to see the game's "soul" by the time you get the airship pass and see the four villains from that Garlean Empire seen at around the level 15 storyline quest.

Also, be forewarned that it treats you as a new adventurer in most respects when you are in fact, a new adventurer.  The first quest is a kill "x", but these stop being quests (for the most part) by level 5 and they only exist because the combat guild wants to make sure you can actually kill something (in game lore).

Aside from that, the game keeps on getting better the more you play it due to the way it's set up.  The difficulty spikes at around level 15 for Story quests and the many systems within the game.  It is also based on a lot of team work; it's possible to get to max level solo on your first class, but it's so much more efficient to be with a team in nearly all respects.

You will also be asked to work hard, and patience is a virtue in this game.  If something is too hard, just unlock another class, level it up, and use it's skills to supplement your main class in which to pass said content (if you no longer have any quests, leveling ala FFXI style with groups is most efficient using the many systems in game).  In addition, just carrying a few antidotes / eye drops / Hi potions won't hurt, either (though with regards to story quests, they pretty much require groups from 15 onward).  The only thing that's really "too" easy are the mobs out in the open world (at the moment). But FATE mobs can be fairly challenging.  Though the systems in place, if used, will provide ample challenge as you level.

Hope you have a good time and give it a fair chance over the next few weekends; the game can get fairly complex once the majority of these systems are unlock, so there's much to look forward to and feel accomplished for when you finally reach them.

Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing).  German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century.  Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now).  I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things).  In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while.  If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.

Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this.  If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own.  Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis.  Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.
