Multiple Guild Memberships

PigglesworthPigglesworth Member UncommonPosts: 260
Although I never played GW2 outside of beta, I loved one concept it promoted, multi-guild memberships. As I stated, I never played outside beta, so I could be wrong on their exact implementation, but the idea is the same.

I hope we are not limited to being in one guild only. I enjoy teaming with several different people and would like to be able to easily communicate and work with each. For example, I have kids. So, I would like to have a small family guild. When I am playing with my kids, I would like to show my family guild tag and have my efforts count towards the development of that guild. When I am crafting, I would like to be able to be part of a crafting specific guild, with its own advancement, etc. Most raiding guilds that I have been a part of want you to be in their guild, for record keeping/loot drops, achievements, etc. And then, when I just want to be a pain in the ass in PVP, I don't want my bad behavior reflected upon my other honorable guilds.

So, an easy solution it to allow players to be part of multiple guilds and allow you to choose which tag to display. If there is a guild advancement/achievement system, you it should allow you to choose when doing each specific activity, which guild you want our actions to count for.

A guild is not different than a club or society in real life. Those that want to hang with different sets of people for different activities should be able to. The current systems of one guild only makes it difficult to enjoy the social aspect of the game with different sets of people.

oh god i hope not, that was the worst mechanic i had ever saw. it killed guilds so fast since there was no loyalty at all. it may be good for guild jumpers but as a former guild leader in GW2 it was absolute trash and an absolute nightmare to run the guild.

Why not just PUG if you don't want to be loyal? Oh right you want all the benefits but none of the cost.

Most likely because I am an elitist pig that prefers to play with a core set of people. Unfortunately, I play with several core sets that don't seem to get along with each other.

My best friends in game, tend not be as dedicated to the game and have as much free time to play as I do. So, yeah, I would like to be a part of what they are building and even contribute to their success. But, at the same time, I need to be able to get what I work for out of the game.

So, yes, I will be part of a top raiding guild, but I would like to help my smaller friends out as well.

guilds are overrated, full of kids that just want others to level up their guild for the perks

    gameplay > graphics

This was another feature of FFXI that I liked and have missed n the MMOs I have played since.

+1 for the "yes, please" vote.

I agree, the guild i joined in GW2 was very good and active to start with at launch but after a few months it got worse and worse to the point i could see guild members online but representing our guild, eventually the guild died a month or so back, in theory a good idea but not so good in practise, well not how it was implemented in GW2 anyway.

I think I'd have to vote "no" for the multiple guilds thing.  Maybe I'm just old school but I consider your guild like your "team" and thus you should only be in one.

That being said, I'd support something similar to the EQ1 fellowship system.  For those who didn't play EQ1 when it was added, basically it was a permanent grouping of up to nine (I think) characters that got their own chat channel and had special benefits like if three people in the fellowship were in the same area, they could set down a campfire and then anyone in the fellowship could teleport to it.

    ^^ To both.

The only guilds that seemed to really do well were those that insisted on 100% representation if you wanted to join.  Meaning, you had to only belong to their guild, and not be bouncing between multiple others.  Being in one guild builds that community: you get to know people, you do things together, you build loyalty.

Being in multiple guilds works for the individual, not the guild.  I wouldn't even say if works all that well for the individual either, as they aren't building meaningful ties, or working with the same people so they can mutually get to know each other.  Its an erosion of what a guild is supposed to represent: unity, friendship, building trust and working together to achieve goals.

A good guild can achieve all the things the OP desires, but in a cohesive, non-fractured way.  I've seen a lot of family oriented guilds that maintain a strong crafting community, have respect for language as kids may be present, and have a healthy raiding force.  If you work towards building a guild that you desire, it can be done.

    interesting.

my guild did just fine in GW2 and we never had that 100% representation requirement.

I felt if people enjoyed hanging out with us they would hang out with us.  I wonder if many of the people that had problems would have had problems whether the multiple guild system was there or not.

I m totaly against multiple guilds...i had bad experiences on GW2. If you join a guild you must be loyal to your guild mates, is a matter of respect for the people you re playing with.

Unfortunately, by being in only one guild, you greatly limit yourself to their schedule. When I played SWTOR, I loved the people in my guild. Unfortunately, they could only start raiding at 11:00 PM EDT. So, if I wanted to raid with this guild, I would not get done until 2 or 3 AM. Since I have to be up at work at 5 AM, this is not that practical.

So, I had to leave that guild in order to raid at a better time for me. Sadly, although I enjoyed raiding with the new guild, the connection just wasn't there. So, I was forced to choose, enjoy the raiding (which was my primary focus) or enjoy the social aspect of the game.

Unless you manage to find a guild on your server that is large enough to handle several raid schedules, you are often out of luck with finding a balance in your guild choices.

The whole point of paying for something is to get to enjoy all of it. Not much point in paying for something and only getting to use part of it. If some people want to be in only one guild. Good for them. They can join a guild that has those restrictions. But, why should the rest of the community be restricted also?

If this game is serious this cannot happen. Think of diplomacy, politics, espionage etc.

I tend to think of EQN as EvE Online with swords and dragons and multiple guilds wont really work

    in this kind of system.

I would say no thanks to multiguild memberships. It was annoying in GW2 - Start off in one guild, someone joins another guild and then members slowly start moving to that guild till you finally get tired of being alone and move with them. Then 1 month later the same thing - 1 member joins another guild, everyone starts to follow....

So yeah, 1 guild at a time.

There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

Agree completely.  Being in multiple guilds frankly is selfish. you are not in it for the teamwork, for building the guild up, only for whichever guild is doing well at the moment.  In the few guilds I have been in we would watch out for guild jumpers, we wanted players who would be loyal and help out the rest of the guild. Cannot imagine we would tolerate someone being in more than one guild.

I was thinking the same thing.  My guild didn't have a problem keeping a good crew together in GW2.  We were always in vent and having a good time.  Sure some people would come and go, but all guilds in all games have people coming and going.  It's the nature of life.

The system in GW2 worked fine.  Games that have different guild systems work fine too.  The core of a successful guild is providing a fun and enjoyable atmosphere without excluding or alienating any of the members.  It has nothing to do with the UI of the game.

You have to love how typical MMO gamers are. Because they had a bad experience and didn't enjoy something, no one else should be allowed to either.

Multiple guilds are great for those that want them. Put in the functionality and let the players decide if they want to use it or not. If you think its a bad idea, don't use it. But, let those that like the idea use it.

Games are becoming too much like real life society. If a group does not like doing or having something, they have to outlaw it for everyone else also. Otherwise, they feel left out.

I don't think this is true. I have never had a bad experience with a guild, and in fact rarely join them. But to me the whole point of joining a guild is to make ties with a loyal tight knit group, almost like a second family. If I want to jump around from group to group, I stay solo or just join one guild and add different players to my friends list and group with them when I can. You don't need to be in a guild with a person to enjoy the game with them.

    Or maybe roll an alt.

Also, you are criticizing fellow gamers for being "typical". Yet you started a thread stating an opinion and asked for others', and yet are upset because no one agrees with you or wants what you want. Pot, kettle and all that. Sounds a wee bit hypocritical to me.

Nothing is stopping you from sticking to one guild, in a game that has a multi-guild system.  Which was his point.  If you want to "form a bond" and enjoy playing with one group of people (Like I do) then do it.

But the option for multiguilds could also be there for other people.

The point is that there's no reason to limit choices.  If you don't like something, don't use it.  It shouldn't affect YOUR experience if you and your group of friends/family are sticking with one guild and not branching out.

You're going completely against what I am saying. I know no one is forcing us to use anything, I'm just saying I don't see the point of it. The OP started this thread saying he liked this feature and why, others like myself are saying we don't like this feature and why. Its a difference of opinion only, so I don't understand why you and the OP feel as if I we are standing between developers, protesting and blocking game advancement or something.

No one is limiting anything. In the end it all comes down to the developers. The only thing that could happen is if devs base their design choices on the majority's feedback.

If you could do one thing that would destroy the cohesiveness of a guild, this would be it.  If you want to be in more than one guild, roll an alt. one thing that made eq1 special was the close guilds. Everyone remembers what guild thy were in when they played eq1.

EVE Online did it ok with corps and I can see no reason it couldnt be done in a fantasy guild setting.

ie: starting guilds, based on location, race, city, kinda like the starting corps in eve.

so for those with no comittment to a guild, they can stay in a large starting guild, and be able to play with anyone they want,  but for those with  the fortitude, integrity and loyalty, they can enter into the guild  system, with the obvious advantages associated with it.

this is  a solution for those flighty people with no committment , and want to join multiple guilds, because face it, if you need to join more than one guild, your more of a taker than a giver.

And from what i have seen in the past years,  these games  are catering to the takers,  hence the give me everything or ill cry attitudes displayed here and on the boards in general.

I personally like being in one guild.  So do many people.  However, my point was there is zero harm in GW2's multi-guild system, because it's optional.  The difference is one choice can appeal to everyone, while the other choice is exclusionary.

I think it's childish to be against an optional feature that you can choose to use or not use.

Frankly I think EQ will not have a multi-guild system, I'm just saying that it's not detrimental to the game in any way.  If people are dropping in and out of your guild in GW2, they would be dropping in and out of your guild in a single-guild system.  The problem lies with the guild itself not being stimulating or fun enough for the player to want to stick around, or the player is simply a guild hopper.

Either way, it has nothing to do with the UI used, but rather with the people involved.

I think its a good mechanic, it allows players with choice which I know is a big no-no in mmorpgs for whatever reason. But it allows players with the option of always having something to do and people to do it with. If you want to PvP start representing your PvP guild and do some PvP with them and once you want to do something else jump over with your PvE friends. There are also RP guilds for players that want it and lets face it, most RP guilds arent doing tons of RvRvR so if you want to experience more than one aspect of the game with more types of people then yes, I think its a good idea.

EDIT: I dont think EQN will be anything like GW2, so who knows if this feature would even work in EQN?
