... and why is it's rating a selling point? Now, I know that companies themselves use it as a selling point for the younger audiences. Yes, the rating system has turned into an advertising ploy. Tell a 13 year old that a game is rated "M" and the majority become more interested, because.. *gasp* They might hear someone swear! Or see animated boobs! Maybe even lots of blood! Or massive violence, like every other game involving combat!! Woop-dee-doo! It capitalizes, in theory, on the desire to be viewed as older, as "mature".

But I just don't get why people fall for this, and your profile says you're 32.. so if you want some harsh language and the possibility of nudity why wouldn't you just buy yourself a Playboy, some Captain Morgan, a pack of smokes, go vote down a school referendum, rent a car and drive it around, join the Army and lay a bet on "Purple Pixie Pounder" in the 8th race at Saratoga?

How would any of it (the things making a "M" rating necessary) help your immersion in an MMORPG or enhance the quality of gameplay?

Well I guess I ought to reply.

You know some people, like me, apreciate games which are modeled more closely to the genre that they are based on.

As far as the M for mature goes. I'm not a pervert who plays games to see womens busts. I do enjoy adult themes in books and magazines. Not for the perversion of it but for the reality of it, for the emersion and for the story that comes from it.

I can relate my desire for Mature rated games to another medium - music. Some years ago NWA, Tupac, Snoop, Biggy, Dr. Dre, Shug Knight, Death Row records, and others pioneered mature media. As mentioned in their documentaries, they weren't being profane to get ratings. They were profane and rapped about the gruesome stories in their lives. The were profane because the stories they told were profane. They wanted to tell it like it was and not water it down.

    Example documentaries:

    • Welcome to Death Row
    • Straight from the Streets
    • Biggie & Tupac

I also like some of the mature content that is within Heavy Metal Magazine. There are some great science fiction/fantasy stories in there that wouldn't be so great if the adult themes weren't there.

Also, a more classical medium - Books. Ever read Lord of the Flies? Remember the children killing each other, sticking pig heads on spears? Pretty gruesome but yet its a classic and required in many high school reading lists.

Parents should moderate what their children do online and what games they play. If Age of Conan is Mature, it's not because they want to gain ratings. It's because the epic story of Conan is mature.

    *** END ***

Off topic: I don't like you relating me to an unresponsible pansy. I've served in the US Navy(am on a 20% military disability), I vote and I drink responsibly. I love my USA and I respect those around me. Enough said.

That is laughable on so many levels it's not even worth describing.

Best learn to develop some thicker skin if you're going to bandy about your opinions. You're entitled to your opinion, but you sure as hell aren't entitled to regulate anyone else's.

There's good reason to be excited over Age of Conan being a "M" rated titled. The original works by Robert E. Howard were violent and dark, full of vile sorcery and gruesome battles. Conan was a thief, a reaver, a womanizer, a pirate, a brigand, a mercenary... The setting doesn't lend itself well to the bullshit Disneylands that are the current stock of MMos.

There will be blood, and damn right! When I hit someone with a sword, they usually bleed! Why shouldn't they do so in a video game?

If you don't like the idea of a "Mature" setting, then to HELL with you!

Listen Asmodeeus, seven years ago, Ultima Online didn't even have those pathetic "quests" that you refer to or those "professions" of ninja, samurai, necromancer, and paladin. Nor did it have any of the neon crap, or bug mounts. It didn't even have any "combat moves." You turned on attack and jousted with simplistic swings. It was a better game then. if you can't guess why then just uninstall the thing and move along. - Crabby

Partysam, as much as I hate to say it...get used to it. These boards are full of immature fools who like nothing more than to rag on people just because.

See, this is a much better post - with no offense to the original thread starter. It tells us WHY the mature rating is a good thing, and doesn't convey a "OMG OMG an 'M' rating!!" message to it. Was that so hard, really?

But on another note.. who said they didn't like the idea of it? I was just questioning why that would draw someone into a game, or why it was put on display like a kid's first hickey.

Membership status is on a 30-day cycle, so being an "elite" member is a highly temporary thing based on activity in the past 30 days, and post character lengths (yes?).. it's hardly anything to brag about. I didn't even notice until you mentioned it. It's nothing to be worried about.

I don't consider any of this bashing.
