LOL that was funny. I always felt bad when they died too lol. I agree also with your comment about RPG. People tend to forget that aspect of the MMO part.

To be fair, I tried to bond, but early on I realized that was going to lead to a lot of heart ache. My horse (named Henry) died trying to defend me. It was a terrible death. At any rate after I started to let Henry into my heart and watching him die. I decided "that's it" I will not have any pets because being around me is going to be to much of a danger to them. Perhaps Bill is a little better at keeping his pets safe than I am.
BTW if anyone still has a pet dog I have a surplus of dog food :-o I would be willing to part with for some linen cloth or alto wine :-)
Mounts felt like a liability to me in the last two games. They died far too easily and they were hard to maneuver accurately during combat thanks to the stupid physics effects. If they make standing still a requirement for casting spells, then horses would be an even greater liability with their wonky physics. Worst of all was the sense of guilt I felt when my horse would die or almost die from even the least dangerous combat situation.
Surely, there's someone who took good care of their horses in those last two TES games.
I think it is a great addition to the game and greatly needed to make more content to progress. I think they are just scared ESO is going to be a successful MMO compared to all the other water downed copy cat crap we have been served for the last 5 years.
I have been following every tidbit of info on ESO and I can't say that it looks like junk or not worth a try when there is so much info out that is great info. Baffles me how some people act, it's like they are manically depressed or something.
Not to get off topic and not to call you out but what is in place that makes you believe that ESO is going to be great that it will retain so many players.
I am not by any means saying ESO will suck, in fact like SWTOR, I believe it will be one of the finest single player games in the MMO universe. But answer me this, why after 6-7 years of this failed "solo" design makes believe this "solo" design will be A, any different, and B, actually work this time? I see the same trappings that have doomed the likes of GW2, SWTOR, Rift, TSW on and on and on. Sure people continue to play but they haven't come close to being labeled successful enough to retain either the majority of their player base let alone their business model.
Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!
Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!
Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

I don't think the inclusion of solo play is the issue, but rather the developers insistence that it be separated from the rest of the game with instancing. Soloing in games like EverQuest was actually a very viable way to play and still socialize with friends AND random players and still feel like you are part of the game world, not walled off from it. Do not underestimate the importance and excitement of run by heals and buffs and rescues or the chance encounters with random strangers out and about in even the farthest reaches of the game's real estate.
I was never crazy about the controls/camera when mounted and so barely used them. I've always explored on foot, and then used fast travel once I had discovered everything in the area. I know they've been in the games, but they're not really something I associate with a core feature of TES.

People like me who refused to use Fast Travel when they added it in Oblivion and to use it in Skyrim took great care of there mounts because we remember Morrowind~

Yes, I'm terrified that one of my favorite IPs might turn into a successful MMO. Because I wouldn't want that now would I? Think of it.. One of my favorite gaming franchises actually turning into a great MMO. The horror!
Then quit complaining and being so negative and you might come across in a different light.
I just read through many of your post in many threads and they are always negative or rude responses, just saying.
I've never complained. I state my opinions and don't praise and hype every game I read about because I've made that mistake in the past several times and it hasn't turned out well. Just because I'm more critical of the games I look at doesn't mean I'm being rude either. It just means I don't buy into games based on the words of 1 person. Once I've tried the game for myself then I usually form my own opinion.
Only way i could realy immerse myself into elder scrolls games like in morrowind was running around in OBLIVION and SKYRIM i never use mounts becouse im constantly exploring and seraching for secrets or other intreresting points on a mount i can't do that very well.
So what if I fed my horse with grass? You know? The green stuff that grows form the ground and is all over the land? Or my horse wont eat this thing? Will it eat only "special magical food"? Like the one produced by crafting guys and costing an arm and a leg? And they will cost a lot. That's cuz in most of the MMO's I've played almost nobody gives a damn about food crafting.
Give me a break. A horse is just a horse and I never actually use it in Oblivion and Skyrim.
If I could attack accurately with a bow, pick flowers and roots for alchemy, and sneak while on horseback, I might consider it.
Unfortunately, I always seem to find myself being the music man to a line of bears, wolves, sabre cats, bandits, and dragons in a trailing line behind me whenever I use a horse.

You mean Skyrim aka "Horse Death Simulator"??
Just watch this guy, hilariously funny showing the endless deaths of horses Skyrim featured, to a point where I simply STOPPEd buying a new horse to replace the dead ones.
(The dying horses come later in the vid... just watch.)

In Skyrim I just stole the closest horse nearby when I needed one up until I got Shadowmere from the Dark Brotherhood, I did grow quite attached to her, and if she died I reloaded the game because... Shadowmere.
In Oblivion I found and used a Unicorn as a mount, and I was very careful with it because I was pretty sure I'd never find another one. The only trouble was if there was anyone with a weapon out near the stables then the thing would attack them till it or they were dead >_>
This opens up for a proper roleplay and a customization. I have always found it weird how many twins, triplets, quadroplets and so on, there have been of horses and how many phoenixes have been caught. Surely, I don't want to get my hopes up too high, but the hopes of actually being more than a nameless hero with the 'phoenixhorseoffirethateveryonehas'.
It's a great addition to the game, and it is what will keep the 'real' nerds in the game. I long for a game that doesn't overfocus on casual-players and a game that understands that DETAIL is what is keeping the game alive.

You and I, we are two different kind of gamers...
A horse is not just a horse. It's a possibility to show how awesome you are and show your own style, but also, a knights mighty steed means something to a roleplayer. Its a delicious detail.
Besides from that, your horse would probably grow better with vitamin-rich food and vegetables instead of grass.
Surely, there's someone who took good care of their horses in those last two TES games.
Maybe, but there really wasn't a point or an incentive to do so. Travel was fairly easy and straight forward, and the only time I found myself using a mount was when I wanted to go to a location that I hadn't gone to yet so couldn't fast travel to. After that I have no clue what happened to my mount.
Also in Skyrim, at points of the game it was practically impossible to not lose your mount because you would be in a dungeon that led to a completely different area outside. So yeah... This is why I am wondering how you were able to take good care of your mounts in the game.
But I do see how it's possible if you're not doing dungeons or going to a place that leads you back to the start. I've been able to keep a mount for a while at least... But not a long time.
Depends on the mods you had installed, a simple whistle always led my horse to where I needed it. Modding was the thing that made the PC versions better than the console versions.
With a few other simple mods I also had quite a cool looking horse so I like the idea of horse progression. You can never have too many features in an mmo it all adds up to more things to do.
What people really want is faster travel,. They may obsess over their mounts, but most really don't care as long as they get to their destination faster.

I agree. I found mounts useless in both oblivion and skyrim.
Only way i could realy immerse myself into elder scrolls games like in morrowind was running around in OBLIVION and SKYRIM i never use mounts becouse im constantly exploring and seraching for secrets or other intreresting points on a mount i can't do that very well.
Also fast travel i dont use much its SUCKS.
I know many who play Skyrim and they all hate horses and don't use them over past few years ive seen most elder scroll fans dont use horses eather.
But true to each his own.
i built a strong bond with the Ethereal horse mod in Skyrim after i parked Shadowmere somewhere in the world and forgot where was it.......
portable mount for the win.

Yeah, I'll talk about mounts over that stuff any day!
