Is my video card failing?

Four0SixFour0Six Member UncommonPosts: 1,175

As it states, that is my question.

Details:

Recently, last couple of days, I have been getting freeze, followed by lockup, sometimes going to black others keeping frozen graphics. I thought it was lag, but Rift keeps going to a "sent error report" dialog box. After this happened a few times, I patched GW2 and get the same result after maybe 10 minutes of play. I will log into DF in a few and see if I get it there too, had not tried that yet as I figure it is more GFX intensive.

I did update my drivers first thing right away.

Thanks for any constructive input.

    Darkfall is running fine....

SO I assume the other games are probably a settings issue...?

Try lowering the graphic settings of your games to see if you get the same issues at roughly the same time intervals.  If the issues happen exactly the same at no matter the setting then it could be something else other than your card.  Try doing a full virus sweep and so forth, then before you finally decide it's the V-card, I would make a back up of your important data and try re-formatting/re-installing windows if that's your OS.

Do you clean out your PC, ever? If not, get some compressed air, turn off your pc, unplug everything etc.. then spray into the fans, etc. Doing so could help lower temps, if you haven't done it already.

Rift is more CPU intensive than GW2 is. What is the temp of your GPU? Upi should be able to see that with your drivers (in your driver screens). As others have said, could be a dirty fan but more than likely I think your fan on your GPU is dying.

    Thanks for the input.

I do NEED to give the tower a "blow job", will commence with that shortly.

I have had temp issues with it from the first day I got it, but other than that it has been fine. Based on the history of temp issues, and the age of the card I was thinking, "time to replace".

Looking back I should have been more clear that this is a recent development, in my OP. I have run GW2, TSW, Rift, DF:UW in the past 4-6 weeks with little or no issue. I did have some issues wit DF:UW, but I in no way can say if that was AV or my tower XD. It is only after taking a long weekend away, and shutting the machine down completely, did these problems arise.

Thanks again, I'll give 'er a good ol cleanin, and move on from there.

What power supply do you have, and what case?  That sounds characteristic of heat and/or power problems.  Of course, heat and/or power problems can also permanently damage a video card, and cause the symptoms that way, too.

Replaced the PSU before, to fix prior heat issues. My case is junk as far as airflow. I did temp temp check earlier and went flying by 100 Celsius, is less than 10 minutes of GW2. GPU temps that is, my CPU stays well under 55.

I think it is time for a rebuild. New case for sure, as I think this is my issue for years now. I hate spend 2 bills to put a new GPU into the oven, so to speak.

I may try to lobby for a budget to cover a full build, but I may also try to negotiate when it rains.

Thanks again for the input. I think we all can learn from this thread that we need to stay cool.
