The game looks great, and I'm pretty sure the planes are correctly modeled and all that. However, there are 2 big issues that keeps me away of this game.
To begin with, I'm a veteran player of World of Tanks. The concept of having several vehicles (planes or whatever) in the same match is alien to me. But specially, when you buy a new plane, your crew is the same if you are using the same slot in your hangar. The combination of crew, several vehicles per crew, so many configurations for modules and crew skills, is driving me mad. And over the years, my patience with new games is much lesser.
The second issue is, I'm not very fan of planes. I'm curious, but they never caught my attention. Then you'll wonder "WTF is this rookie doing in this game". Well, good question. I'm testing it, because it's said that it, eventually, will include planes, warships and tanks in the same game, with players driving all this different vehicles in the same match. So even if I'm not good with planes, maybe I can get a slight grip of the common elements in the game are (interface, physics, graphics...etc)
Finally, I was checking some videos in youtube with tutorials of War Thunder. How to do evassive maneuvers, how to aim, the types of ammo.... but I'm not sure if this is for me.
So, what do you think, should I try harder to understand the menus, interface, and basics of flying, or better to keep playing WoT or any other game until there are tanks and warships in War Thunder (of course I'm also waiting for World of Warships)?
PS Not to mention World of Warplanes has the worst controls I've ever seen in a game. Playing with mouse and keyboard is not enough excuse to justify it. You can even pass through the ground without crashing.

Just play on arcade use altitude to then dive on enemies, avoid attacking frontally enemy aircraft, don't rush enemies wait for your teammates to reach your position, don't shoot the EA that your teammates are trying to instead go for the EA that his pursuing them.

I too am not a natural when it comes to dog fighting, however this game offers a different approach with bombers, allowing you to focus on ground targets with high altitude or low level mechanics, and you can rely on AI on your turrets or control them yourself, so you do fire on an enemy as they approach you, which is much easier than fighter to fighter.
There are some great tutorials on YT, the previous poster mentions diving which is the first part of the Boom and Zoom tactic, where you use the momentum of the dive to out speed your target and then dive up after 1 burst of fire, and only level off at high altitude which takes a lot of practice as you can rip your wings off, black out, or miss the target with the wrong angle, but its a good way to avoid being attacked by too many fighters, increases the chances of a pilot kill and keep you alive as long as a bomber.
I tried going back to WoT after a week in WT and I see the flaws that are fixed by allowing crew slots rather than plane slots, as it means you can keep and use every single plane you buy, handy for lower tier fights and events. The premium ammo didn't help either, in WT there is no health bar so it's more about types and locations of damage, which is far more tactical, and harder to exploit than in WoT, I can't imagine how bad it is in WoWP.
I've played since closed beta ( i rarely play right now becouse im too busy for other games )
but imo its simple as it is right now ... there are 3 type of planes ... you have to choose between 5 nations each focus on type of plane.. for example if your a "fighter" player then uk is the best imo ( but it REALLY depends on your taste) then here comes the customization... each time you lvl you can unlock some planes.. as for customization of planes.. there really isnt something to think of.. i just upgrade evrytime i unlock something but in terms of "ammo" types its your choise... some piercing ammos are meant for "bombers" and some are meant for "fighters" etc...trust and its MUCH more simplistic when it launched.
The best experience i had with this game was when i got my first dogfight and kill..I screamed so hard becouse of EPICNESS (sorry for my english)
I'd say try it a bit more. It can seem a bit "alien", if you're not used to flight sims, since you're actually moving in all 3D (hope it makes sense). At first I felt the same as you, but after playing for a bit more, it became really satisfying to out maneuver others or pull off some stunt (I am by no means what I would call good at the game tho ).
As far as upgrade go, just get everything that unlocks. For crew skills, I guess that there are guides on what to take over others, but I stuck to what made sense to me.
Feels like the no health bar approach is a lot more enjoyable... sure there are times where you get unlucky or make a bad move and fall pretty fast, but it's also so cool to have your plane full of holes, while nothing so critical as to take you down was hit and you keep on fighting, without a health bar to say you took to many hits so you must be dead.
Also, I too am very curious how tank battles will be in this game, with these mechanics, as opposed to WoT.
Of course, if you still can't get into it, even after some more time, no point in forcing yourself and wait for the tank part, ground forces will need drivers.
