    ROFLMAO

    1. Old news other threads on this already
    2. .... and no one have every thought a government has made silly decisions before.
    3. The purpose of this decision is not prestige its immigration control and taxation.

I think this is more of a formality as players from other countries (edward from russia comes to mind) join american teams. Until now I assume they couldn't get a work visa.

considering these are also given the same treatment. . . . ..

    pool

    darts

    Frisbee

    table tennis

and several more, im inclined not to care what the government terms a pro sport.

F2P may be the way of the future, but ya know they dont make them like they used toimage

Same with chess as I mentioned in the other thread on this topic earlier today.

So basically it now recognized as a "game" much like many others listed above.

It's still not a "sport" in the traditional sense.

Sport, "Sport refers to the exercise of skill in a physical activity which is often competitve, and carried on for its intrinsic enjoyment, including that of its spectators.[1][2]"

Sports are physical activities.  Nearly all games aren't.

Clearly the government is more likely to leverage an existing thing like an athlete visa than to create some entirely new type of visa just for gaming, so that's why they did this (at least if you opt not to go with the particularly sarcastic responses others have provided, heh.)

Games aren't sports -- and you shouldn't care that they aren't, but simply enjoy that e-sports are a fantastic new form of competition and entertainment. Who the hell cares if they're considered a sport, as long as they're more fun to play and watch than actual sports?

government say what they want, doesnt mean its real. And i dont care what they say. First they were trying to eradicate (or increase tax to) violent games, and now the pvp game with the highest amount of players with violent temper is recognized as a sport for professional athlete. Gotta go to the gym to be fit for some matches...

Yeah well, the US government also thinks that sending hi-tech weapons to cannibalistic 'rebels' with ties to terrorist organizations is a good idea too, so it would be wise to take anything they say or determine with a few billion grains of salt.

E sport...is neither mentally taxing like chess nor it is physically taxing like football, tennis, swimming etc. To refer to e'sport people as athletes is just absurd.

Clearly in agreement here. What's worrisome is that now it's been done. What else will they add to this list and will ESPN start covering it?  image

The issue I have isn't that a video game can be considered a sport. I feel that there are some exceptionally well made games out there that fall into that category of esport.

The problem I have is that there is no regulation or set standard. Any dev can put some sort of pvp system into their game and deem it esport. We don't have a strict criteria or a panel of judges to evaluate a game and determine if it is well made enough to be considered an esport. Which in turn, devalues the term and it becomes little more than just another marketing gimmick.

Legitimize the process first. Then maybe people will respect the term.
