I'm sick of that sentence... play WoW instead. don't play FFXI it sucks, and EQ2 blows, but WoW kicks ass! you ask for people to give you a reason... their reason... "cause it sucks". I've played every Final Fantasy, i've obsessed over them actually. but everytime i ask ANYONE which of the 3 biggies i should play (eq2, wow, ffxi) they all say WoW. soo... i ask you... what the hell is wrong with FFXI?
i'm looking for; easy to solo, good char classes, good skill tree, nice graphics, and CHOCOBO's damnit! will FFXI meet my needs?
thx

I have been playing WOW since beta and although it's a great game it has its problems. I'm actually thinking about coming over to Final Fantasy just for the simple reason that I've been told by friends that lag is not as bad as on WOW. The new Honor System that has been added to WOW has slowed things down and PVP is getting a bit insane. I played EQ for over a year and the game was great but zoning took so long it made that game boring after a while. Since I have a job and a family I can only get on for about an hour a day and if 50% of that time is spent zoning, I can't play it. I'm hoping FF will fix these problems for me
Necrotank
i've heard WoW and EQ2 are both bad for lag... well in comparison to FFxi. and is there any zoning sorta stuff going on in FFXI? or is there just one initial loading screen? eeeeeeeeeeek. QUESTIONS NEED ANSWERS! hehehe.
thx

These questions are easy enough.
There are 15 job classes:
Red Mage: little bit of everything, nukes healing and melee, but specialize in nothing. Theya re mainly used for their MP regening spell, Refresh.
White Mage: Your standard healer.
Black Mage: Your standard Nuker
Warrior: Standard Fighter.
Thief: Use of Sneak Attack to garuntee a critical when behind the mob combined with your Weapon Skills will create your damage. Use Daggers after level 33.
Monk: High damage, especially at higher end of game, use their fists mainly but can use clubs and staves as well, though not usually in PTs.
Advance Jobs- Attainable after completing a quest and geting to level 30.
Paladin: The main tank class. Use healing spells of different kinds, defense abilities, and their natural Vitality to tank. Use swords mainly.
Dark Knight: Damage Dealer and use of small nuke spells. They also have the Absorb spells which will absorb the stats of their enemies and give them a stat boost. Use cythes and Great Swords mostly, also have use of Great Axe.
Ranger: Use bows and arrows and one of THE most damaging classes in the game. Build TP (used for their Weaponskills) very quickly.
Samurai: The Skillchain master. They gain TP EXTREMELY fast and can open and close all sorts of skillchains. Use Great Katana.
Ninja: Another job that the players turned into a tank. Was orginally a debuffer/damage dealer and through the use of their spell, Utsusemi, they were turned into a tank. Utsusemi keeps you from getting hit.
Beastmaster: Use pets to solo. If you dont have much time this is really the job you are looing for. Sub Mage jobs for solo playing, in teh rare occasion they want to PT they can sub Warrior or Ninja if they wish.
Dragoon: Was originally a good Damage Delaer but was weakened due to various updaes. They are not a bad damage dealer and are good for skill chaining with Thieves.
Bard: Use songs to buff/debuff their Party/Enemies. Use songs such as Accuracy Up, ATtack up, Defense up, and MP refresh.
Summoner: Use their Avatars to buff their party members and to attack the enemy. They learn various different skills for their avatars but my Summoner friends complain that they were gimped because of updates that decreased the avatars' attack power.
As far as soloing goes, there isnt much of it unless you go BST (Beastmaster). This game is built around partying with other players and Beastmasters are the only class that can successfully solo up to the level cap ina reasonable amount of time.
Zoning time isnt bad at all. It can take a few seconds at times but it isnt bad AT ALL unless you ahve something running in the background.
There are OF COURSE chocobos but there is a quest you must complete before you can use them. At level 20 you travel to the "capital" of the game and do a quest that involves feeding a chocobo herbs once an hour for 6 hours to heal it because it was abused by its owner. They do not have to be 6 consecutive hours and the area you level at level 20-25 is right outside town so you dont have to travel far.
The graphics are very good as long as you ahve a computer good enough to run them. I have them "overclocked" i guess you can say. There is a way to change the registry files to make the background resolution much clearer and look much better.
If you want to see class skills you can find them here: http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?cat=16
If you go into the job's forums there is an option at the top to see their ablilities, but note that there have been new abilities added that have not be added to their list. The two i can think of off the top of my head are the THF skill Assassin and a SAM skill which allows them to attack again if they miss.

1. easy to solo: FFXI is probably the most group-oriented MMO ever. You pretty much need a group to effectively do anything (except trade skills, farming cash etc). From what Ive heard there is only one class that can solo through all 75 levels. WoW and EQ2 are much more solo friendly.
2. good char classes: I personally like FFXI:s jobs and the system with subjob. Its totally subjective in my opinion. But I think Wow got quite few classes, and EQ2 quite many.
3. Skill tree: The way I understand it, every lvl 50 Black mage (just to use an example) got the same spells/skills. So you wont be able to specialize in other skills and thus be unique.
4. graphics. FFXI got better graphics than WoW in my opinion. Depends what you like, WoW is too cartoonish for my taste.
5. Chocobos: No need to comment.
So all in all, if you really need to Solo and want to have sort of a unique character FFXI might not be for you. You will need to group to get good xp. FFXI offers quite a challenge, WoW is supposed to be "easier".
Oh, FFXI got zones. And less lag than most mmo:s out there.
I've heard other things too... like one of the advantages of WoW as to FFXI is that WoW can have multiple characters where as with FFXI you have to pay extra for extra's. (whew... heh) but i don't see how that's an advantage... if i make ONE character, i'll focus on that ONE character. do you at all feel like you've been ripped off because of this? or are you happy with your 1 character?
sheesh. i'll just keep firing em off. you guys are kickin ass for answering em.
1) what's the role play like? better or worse than WoW/EQ2? (i've heard WoW is lacking...)
2) is it better to have 1 character, or a few?
3) any summons of any kind? like... the original ones you saw over and over and over in the console games?
4) biggs, wedge, jesse, cid... they around? heh (in any form?)
5) which has the best combat system? WoW/FFXI/EQ2 (how's it work?)
hrmmm... think that's it for now...
thx

Which FF Character Are You?
2) At first you only need one character, but eventually you might run out of room in your safe, at which point you create that extra character for $1 more. God thats so expensive! >.>
3) If there are a summoner there are of course avatars. Right now they have Ifrit, Titan, Garuda, Leviathan, Fenrir, Shiva, Carbuncle, Ramuh.
4) Cid is in the city of Bastok but i dont rememebr seeing Wedge or Biggs in the game anywhere...
5) Ive played WoW but ive never played EQ2. WoW has the sme kind of auto-atatck system this has, but instead you really only have to hit one button. You hit 2, you do your ability, you hit 1 you constantly attack... In FFXI you target the monster and attack based on the delay fo your weapon. After you gain 100% TP you can fire off your weaponskill. Then there are buffs and everything you can use while attacking. Also when you are doing ranged attacks you hit your macro or the ranged attack button combination to attack, you dont just hit it once and let it fly.

I love FFXI. Good choice. I also enjoy the some of the ones you mentioned, but prefer FFXI. You might also want to checkout city of City of Heroes and RYL: POTE. You really can't go wrong...hella fun.
Peace!
And FFXI has zoning, but the zones are lag free
i dont know about EQ2, but I know WoW doesnt have zoning.

ffxi sucks.
I played ffxi to level 50. Even did the stupid lvl 50 cap quest too.
Everything in ffxi sucks. The graphics. The gameplay. The quests. The combat system. The community. The music. The characters. The crafting. The auction house. The UI. And Even the install.
everything in this game is VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY LONG!!!!!!!!!!!!
not to mention boring.
This game is full of japanese people who had a huge headstart before north american release and totally took over the economy.
Normally it takes about an hour just to set up a party and to wait for them to show up.
If you only have a few hours or less to play a day then this game is not for you. you will make no progress.
I LOVED ALL THE OTHER Final Fantasy games Except this one.
THIS GAME SUCKS. DO NOT BUY IT.
FFXI is the shiznit over all. Yeah the install and patching takes forever but its well worth it. Sometimes it was hard to find a party but Thats why I started playing WHM first off there was never enough WHM out there and second everyone wants you in there party. So being a Whm 15 to 20 minutes max of wating for a party.
Everything is long in this game thats why I love it. The longer the better I dont want to get to the highest lvl in 6 months ore less that would be gay. Im goign to start playing this game once again in a week or 2 once I save up some money to buy a new mobo ram and procy from newegg.
A few points on both sides that I haven't seen yet:
The quests in WoW have just been awesome. They're well written, engaging, and combine to progressively reveal what has been so far a fascinating storyline, even at the lower levels. Blizzard has put a ton of effort into them, and they just really shine. This makes a real difference in immersing you in Azeroth. You get involved totally in the missions.
FF XI has something that is, as far as I know, largely unique in MMORPGs; the Conquest system. As you go out and kill mobs, you rack up points for your nation (there are three), both at large and for the region you're fighting in. The various nations gain or lose influence over the regions based on those totals. This affects whether there's friendly outposts you can check in at in those regions, and also whether goods from that region get sold in the markets back at the home city. Regions can even be lost to the invading beastmen if too many PCs die there. You get personal Conquest points that you can trade in for exclusive goods from your nation, as well. So PCs, even at the lowest levels, make contributions that combined to influence the course of the game, which I find very neat. WoW's PvP does this to an extent--and the additions of Battlegrounds will do more--but it's only for the higher levels. Even level 1 characters participate in a small way in Conquest.
WoW has a unique "rest" system that helps players who aren't playing constantly. Basically, while you're in an inn in town, or logged out from an inn in town, you get rest; you can continue to accumulate rest for up to a week. Actually, you get rest whenever you're logged out, but if you didn't log out at an inn, you get it a much reduced rate, While you're rested, you get double XP from kills (you also get XPs for completing quests and entering areas for the first time; these don't get the bonus). Each kill you get uses up rest until you feel "normal", at which point the bonus goes away. I like this system and think it helps keep the game worthwhile for those who can't be constantly playing.
I like FF XI's system of chaining skills; it adds a level I don't see in WoW's combat system. (Although I'm still new enough that I haven't had a chance to try it out yet)
I might also note that FF XI has no PvP; higher level characters can test themselves against each other in Ballista, but there's no real PvP where PCs can kill other PCs in the field. Whether or not this is a good thing will depend on the point of view of who you ask.
Overall, WoW is easy. You progress quickly and can have a hell of a lot fun without having to devote your life to it. I haven't had to go out and kill stuff just to get XP and gold once; fulfilling my quests has consistently levelled me enough to take on the next set of quests I get issued. Dying has little penalty associated with it. FF XI is hard. Crafting is VERY hard (too hard, IMHO). Dying results in a significant XP penalty and may even delevel you. I have definitely gone out just to grind mobs. But you do get a sense of accomplishment from your achievements that WoW is hard-pressed to match.
Me? I play both (it's nice having a steady paycheck...). I'm still pretty much a newbie (level 8 hume red mage in FF XI, level 13 night elf hunter and level 6 human paladin in WoW), but I like 'em both. They're decidedly different flavors, but they're both good. I may spend more time with FF XI simply because it takes more time to get something done in FF XI, but I'm not planning on giving up either of them soon.
Since I am in Bastok, I'll have to see about swinging over to Cid's lab in the Metalworks and getting a screenshot for the guy who wanted one (I already ran a mission for him, even if I didn't understand all the sciencey words he used about the acidity tester he gave me to take out to the geisers!)

I know I've seen Wedge somewhere.
A couple of concerns were mentioned about not having a skill tree for each class. While its true that the skill tree can alter playing styles drastically, the lack of the skill tree puts more emphasis on a player's skill at a particular class. In addition, if you mess up in a game that has a skill tree, you're screwed (unless there are 'unlearn' options somewhere).
It's true that there's a huge grind session and that's something that might need to be fixed, but this game has excellent party dynamics to make up for it.
Is anyone else a little annoyed at the cartoonyness of the WoW characters? I mean, tarutaru are cartoony and overcute, but come on.. the craftsmanship of the Hume, Elvaan and Mithra make up for that!

Yes, WoW lets you unlearn talents if you decide you've screwed up your tree; you are then free to use the slot for something else.

For the person who wanted the screenshots of Cid:
The guy in the funny hat is, of course, me.
If you're wondering what Cid's doing in Bastok, here's a few screenshots of the heart of the Metalworks...

Don't knock me for an honest review.
Everyone has an opinion and this is mine.
If you dont like it then go **** yourself.
I think that FFXI is lot more better than WoW ... FFXI have great story (as final fantasy allways have) and ffxi is so addictive i have to play it more and more and i cant never stop playing it Great game! if u dont have it, BUY IT NOW!
Well, I've heard that this game is purely team-based. Like I heard a good quote from a player: "You can't even wipe your ass without a party."
I don't know if that's entirely true. I've levelled up to 10 just about entirely solo. I think being a red mage helped. I think at this point parties would help me level up fast a lot. Most people are telling me that at lvl 10 I should go to the Valkurm Dunes, and there is absolutely no way I could fight mobs on the Dunes without a party. On the other hand, Konschtat Highlands and Palborough Mines look very doable solo to me and I could definitely advance working them. It just wouldn't be as fast. I'm probably going to go to the Dunes more because I want to learn working in a party (there's a lot a stuff to learn about working in a party in FF XI, notably chainskills, which I need to learn to do) than because I want fast experience. A lot of the quests look like you want a party for instead of waiting to be high-level enough to solo them.
Chris Mattern
Of all the mmorpgs I've played I would have to say ffxi is my least favorite. There are many reasons why I dislike this game but the main two would have to be the time it takes to get a good party and the economy.
The Time It Takes To Make A Good Party :
It takes extremely long to make a party good enough to actually make some progress. I personally do not have as much time as some people do playing these type of games but I can at the most invest 4 hours on a work day. When I get home from work I want to have fun and enjoy myself. While playing FFXI I have noticed myself feeling more frustrated then having fun. It actually feels like another job at times. Sometimes it takes 30 min to make a party sometimes it take an hour but, there's nothing promising you that you guys make progress. I've been in many well formed parties (having well balanced members) but have still have made no progress due to newer people not fully understanding the combat system. I partied with some japanese players once and not until then did I realize how this game was ment to be played.
Finding a party as effecient as the japanese is hard thing to find. I played this game for a year and made it to level 64 with many different level subjobs and In all honesty, I've never played a game where there are so many people who don't understand the game at higher levels. I find myself asking "how did these people make it this far?". Then I realize that all these people do is play games all day.
If I had to sum this game up in one word I would say "Frustrating".
The Economy :
Rumors have it that the Japanese had a year or two head start prior to the release in the united states. It makes sense when you party with them. They have better equipment, more experience and to the best of my knowledge they communicate alot better. With the year or two head start they have completely took over the auction house. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Once you get to higher level you realize that many high level farm these monsters that spawn anywhere from 1h to 4h maybe even longer timer. They are called Notorious Monsters. They have a long downtime and have a chance to drop a very valuable item. The problem here is that "rumor" the americans have a 2 second delay on monster spawns. Example: 8 people standing in a general spot for 3 hours.... Since it can be a bit boring at times you start to have a conversation with them when you realize that 4 of them are japanese and can only communicate using the translater. You then see the 4 japanese players do a mad scramble... as you look around you see nothing... you then see the mob spawn but already being attacked a/the japanese. You here people talk about this all the time. You would think that one time would be a coincidence that maybe the japanese players saw it prior to the americans just by chance... but after months of the japanese getting these kills first and having numerous people report that they see nothing until the japaense are attacking makes you wonder.
