Alright, this is what got me playing games in the first place.
With all the material that the old FASA has on it , could it work?
I mean with Space combat, mech combat and all the way down to INFANTRY. I think it begs to be done, but was curious about what the MMO community thought.
IMO it would be a great game to compete with the SWG franchise and the current MMO's .
EVE is getting old (still fun) and Planetside is getting boring also why not combine the two?

I would LOVE to see an Battletech Based MMO as I have been a player of the SBG since it was called Battle Droids. Long before certain mech designs were removed for copyright infringment. Problem being is licensing. Last I checked the who shabang there was screwed up. So I don't know if we would ever see a decent Battletech Online game.
There was one in creation a few year back. Battletech Online, but it was scraped. Shame too...it was fun. More of an MMOFPS though.
"What is it I have against Microsoft, you ask? Well, you know how you feel when you wait for an MMO to come out and when it does you feel like you've paid to play it's beta test for another 6-9 months before anything even thinks of working the way it should? Being a network engineer you feel that way about anything Microsoft puts out."
no cus mechwarrior is a second rate mech combat game.
yes i know tis classic.
But Steel batallion and armored core are much better. mech combat games are best played with a controller then with a keyboard.
and steel batallion rocks with Xbox live(i dont have the lvie but i ahve the game and its controller)
steel batallion costs 150 bucs though but it has a nifty 40 or 50 button controller and u actually feel like ur in mech to varying degrees, depending on ur tv/sound.
i felt i was cus i was playing on a projector screen with surround sound.
and armored core is awesome just the best customization ever, i want it to go online and for PC and make its own damn controller.

When people talk about -what would make a good setting- for an mmorpg, I've always thought that Battletech was an obvious choice.
It would especialy make a great pvp game. Lots of planetary raids and politics, rising to power in a House - it could be realy brilliant.
Although those are good games that you mentioned I think you've failed to grasp what the OP is trying to say. I remember playing Mechwarrior on a old Amiga back in 1991 when I was going to school at Devry and being absorbed in the depth it offered. First you have to recruit pilots, then you had to train them and finally outfit your mechs and go to battle. After you fought you were given rank and credits to further train and upgrade/repair your mechs. I would spent hours trying to turn my greenhorns into seasoned vet pilots.
Now imagine if you could live in the shoes of one of those pilots. Or better yet imagine having to start as a noname of any of the factions/clans that litter the mechwarrior universe and building your skills as a fighter, merc, pilot or mechanic. Then imagine saving, stealing, buliding or earning your first mech. Now a whole new world is at your fingertips.
Do you become a ace pilot and fight for a faction, try to become the new leader of your own clan, become a mercenary for hire to the highest bidder, fight in gladiator-type mech battles to win credits to build your ultimate mech or just wander the land salvaging mech parts to trade in for much needed repairs? The ideas are endless. Or maybe I'm off from the OP's views myself. Either or Mechwarrior would make one helluva MMO.

Yeah this isnt a debate as to which mech game is better, or at least that wasnt my impression. As for a mech game Id much rather see it in the battletech world than mechwarrior, but in the big scheme of things if either came out I would almost certainly play it. It would be rather hard to keep the game involing wouldnt it? It would almost surely have a great deal of combat inside the mech, but that would get old quick. In order for it to be a true mmog, it would have to have alot of foot content too. Trully be immersive, instead of just being a 50 mech pvp battle all the time.

all those same things and more can be said about armored core.
but mechwarrior the original ones are the best the new ones are just weak immitations far surpassed by steel battallion and armored core nexus. but those games are much much harder.
armored core 2's Ares is one of the hardest computer AIs i have ever fought. im not sure if it was the AI or the fact that he had a super illegal amount of cheater points. his mech was super overweight for what its legs could support, its generator shoudlnt have supported that much. and his mech was overall very very very broken.
also he was so god damn smart, he is one of the few AIs that i think knows what ahppens last battle and memorizes your fighting style. he was smart all the armored core AI's are exceptional.

Alright,
I have played armored core and steel battallion and both are very good.
To give you a better idea of what I mean, Mechwarrior is in the Battletech universe ... Fasa had a fully developed game (old P&P) of infantry, tanks, mechs, jet fighters, Interplanetary ship combat (dropships), and the intersteller travel and trade. If you was to develop this out into a full game :
Thats (1) game that could encompass the whole universe and hence have something for everyone... tired of being a mech pilot ... try a jet for awhile... or a space ship.
Perhaps this a grand idea, but one game that could have FPS,RTS,MMO,Flight sim all combined
But then again I am a fanboy..... but microsoft owns the rights... wouldn't that kick SONY in the teeth for someone to comeout with that.
This all started due to a discussion with some gamer friends on having 1 game to do everything

I would be checking it, in case the PvE grouping or soloing system is worth it.
