But the "I was so hyped and now I'm holding a loaded .45" always was pure forum drama nonsense anyway. Just as the cries of DOOOOOOM are.

well, if there's ONE thing different about EQN it's the fact that it has been officially described as the biggest sandbox mmorpg created.
And i don't think we've ever heard in the past a triple-A budget company use the words 'sandbox' and 'mmorpg' in the same sentence. I at least can't remember of any.

And here sir, you have it the key point of why I'm hyped to find out what they have to say on August 2nd.

Good point. That fact does make me believe EQ:N is going to be worth playing. If only because it's something different from all the current MMO clones.
People were just as hyped about swtor and that it was being made by Bioware before they released any information for it, look what happened with that lol. At least with EQN I know its a sandbox and thats the only thing keeping the game on my radar.
As I have said before, OP: It's like this every time a game gets announced. Get over it now, or find a new place to hang out.
I don't blame people for being excited. I've been there before, but after years and years of this, I have learned to at least wait until the game is announced and there is some information to look at.
I'll tell you all a (not so) secret about evaluating MMO games before they are released, but after the official marketing push starts. Listen to what the game developer IS NOT saying about the game. This is how many of us know SWTOR (and many other games) were going to suck before they were even close to release.
For example, Bioware barely said a word about space gameplay, or crafting, or PvP, or social features all the way up until the game released. All you heard was "Story, Story, Story", and so the writing was on the wall. I glance over the information they put out there, then I start asking questions and pay attention to the stuff they dance around.
Pretty-much common sense. But it's so true. Play up the strengths. Defer from the weaknesses.
I wish I could remember where I read this but before SWTOR released, one of the people from BW was being interviewed and was asked about a question about features from SWG. And the response was something along the lines of "And look where they are now" Not a valid answer. Poetic justice I guess. But yeah, when they start avoiding direct questions. There is a red flag.
You would think it's common sense, but a lot of people have trouble taking note when a game developer is dancing around particular issues. I see a lot of people on these forums making statements like "It's only beta, I'm sure they will turn Y features on at launch" or "they are probably keeping it secret until launch", etc.
SWG: yes, look where they were. How many years was the game online? It might not have been the biggest game in the world, but it had a core of followers. Would have had more if they didn't NGE it. A lot of people who ignored the game in its last few years didn't know the devs were starting to put pre-NGE features back into the game, because so many people were asking for them back.
This is another reason I hold out some unusual hope for EQN. I think some people at SOE had to learn some lessons from SWG. I think they know now that they had some special features that more of the market is ready for. Evolved versions of those features, of course. They could make a mean hybrid by addressing strengths and weaknesses from SWG.
I feel truly blessed by your wisdom.. By the way, you're the only person on the internet that didn't know that SWTOR's space combat was a tunnel game until after release. When they said it was on rails and they showed you the video, you probably should have been able to clue in on that, eh?
You're secret is really good too, except it does not apply here, since to use your own words, EQN hasn't reached the point of "after the official marketing push starts".
But thanks again for all your wisdom. Next time you pontificate, I suggest backing up your argument with facts, rather than a faulty memory of events.
You probably don't remember this, but imagine going from Ultima Online to Everquest. That's the type of evolutionary step SOE is promising again.

BioWare's first MMO, funded by EA vs EQN made by SoE the longest running successful maker of triple A MMOs. Sandbox or not, I would take that bet =-)
You could very well be right. I personally think, for me, it would take an absolutely terrible game to deter me. I have not been playing anything for 6 months and won't until this comes out. Dulling my senses down so I have nothing to compare it to

Did you forget what happened to SWG, Vanguard and The Agency? They dont exactly have a perfect record in successful mmos.
The nostalgia of EQ1 will forever be a strike against most big EQ fans, because the chance of getting that same new experience feeling back is quite slim. I have no doubt the game is going to be good and I will definitely be saying, take my money. Unfortunately, the perfect game we're all imagining is going to have one hell of a time impressing. Best of luck either way, I'll be there.
The one ray of hope comes from how much Smed is convinced EQN will be totally revolutionary, as this isn't an out of touch or newb group to the extent Bioware, Tanaka or Zenimax where to making mmos or the mmo industry...
...leaving us with only two equally likely (or rather unlikely) options, either he and all of SOE are massively deluded, or they are right. The odds seem even, as I doubt it is mere overestimate of a mediocre product. The problem will be that EQN will have a large number of features a lot of people with have issue with (or how they fit together), as this is not a Kickstarter like SOTA or StarCitizen, made step by step will the public's approval.

I think a lot hinges on how good the combat will be. I expect as it's using the PS2 engine, Forgelight Engine
it could be really solid and a big leap for fantasy sandbox mmorpgs?

Good or bad, I'll still enjoy my next two weeks. And probably the two weeks following those.
I don't have the same anxious anticipation I had in my youth, yet I will still try any game that seems interesting...even this one.
