I've been giving this some thought because I've recently found myself with too much free time on my hands recently, and rather than doing something productive such as weeding the area outside by my pool, I've decided to devote it to something remarkably more fun.
First and foremost, I decided I didn't really like the name 'guild' for Warhammer 40,000. I find the term too... tired, and not of the right format, because I don't think it particularly suitable for the war torn far future as we're not really craftsmen (or shouldn't be imo). I prefer the term 'Brotherhood', and perhaps by outlining my thoughts you will be able to see why, although I do think I'm arguing semantics haha.
1) A Brotherhood is factional dependent: Perhaps obvious, but a particular Brotherhood can only be 'crewed' by those of the same species/race as the Brotherhood 'captain' (an informal rank that marks respect imo, you are not a Space Marine 'Captain' per say). You can't have Eldar and Space Marines belonging to the same Brotherhood, although Eldar can belong to their own Brotherhood and so on.
2) A Brotherhood is not chapter dependent: Players from the Space Marine chapters such as the Dark Angels and Blood Angels can join together to form a Brotherhood for example. A 'lore' reason could be to form specialist teams to destroy key strategic targets (or seize, whatever) as they form that may otherwise be unaccessible for the Company to strike together for whatever the reason. Another lore example could be something like the Death Watch.
3) Belonging to a Brotherhood could give rewards: As a Brotherhood's 'renown' becomes more famous due to their accomplishments, rewards for individual players could increase at some pace. For example, say a Tactical Marine has killed 100 Ork players, perhaps that Tactical Marine would usually be rewarded 50 Kraken Bolts (which does something suitably amazing), but because he belongs to the Brotherhood 'Death Watch' which has performed admirably, the player receives 75 Kraken Bolts instead.
4) Belonging to a high Renowned Brotherhood could increase voting block for factional governance: Death Watch is awesome. The Brotherhood has performed admirably and has gained the trust of the factions within their species. This means that Death Watch players have a 'heavier' say in who becomes the next factional Captain (which is likely to be a Death Watch officer). Renown can be reset after each campaign. This should be normalized for the amount of players though within the guild.
