Im not sure where it came from but I think its common knowledge that classes can use 10 skills from other classes (at 50), and jobs get 5 skills from their job and 5 from other classes. Maybe someone else can cite a source or correct me if Im wrong.
GLD ---> PLD so having mana isnt too out there of an idea. They could always gear for mana, couldnt they? Ill admit I chose GLD as an example because they duel wield, and didnt consider they are a tank so might not fit. Maybe lancer then? Or pug? One thing I just noticed though is that by the current spreadsheet no class seems to be able to take any real THM damage spells. That might be a thorn that prevents RDM, but they could change things in 4 and there is also the arcanist that we know next to nothing of.
edit: to the question of whether classes can choose from 1 or 2 classes - on the spreadsheet notice most of the jobs have 2 other classes they can choose from. Only BLM and WHM dont seem to. Im guessing that its just missing information on the spreadsheet.
Oh, I see - you and I were looking at exactly the same spreadsheet the whole time, but I misinterpreted what you meant. Yes, people do get 10 slots by level 50 which they can fill by selecting from any of the allowed skills from the 1-2 particular classes that job is tied to (I was generalizing from the perspective of the white/black mages when I said 'maybe 1 class' - I did know that some jobs could draw from 2 other classes - I don't care to assume how future announcements will change the spreadsheet and we don't know much about arcanist yet, which is what I was talking about originally).
I didn't say you wouldn't have mana (even GLD has a mana pool), I was just saying it's probably going to be a relatively small one. It would not be a good idea to gear for mana, because the stat that increases maximum mana generally only comes on gear that has only caster stats and no melee stats on it - not to mention that most of those are only equipable by certain classes. I won't rule out that there is high level paladin gear that includes max mana increases - maybe the AF gear does for example, but if it does, it likely won't have caster stats like INT to make your spells effective. Maybe there is enough high-level generic gear equipable by all classes that happens to have caster and mana stats on it, and you'll just have to live with wearing cloth and not doing much melee damage - I couldn't say.
GLD is perhaps a better bet than LNC or PUG I think (by "dual wield" you meant using sword and shield right?), since the latter two have even less of a natural mana pool, though I haven't tested how that may change if you equip them with many spells (probably not much if at all).
Don't let me discourage you from experimenting, I'm just saying we're probably going to have to wait for an actual red mage job to be added before we get any group/raid viable hybrid quite like the red mage.
