help help help help....oh ok, i'll pay for it

I see soooo many folks talking about how great EQ used to be and how they want it to be based on their memories.  Don't get me wrong, palying EQ1 now is not like it was back then, but quite frankly, back then the only difference was we had groups from Orc Hill to the hole.

I don't want to go back to the future, I don't want SOE to generate something that will only let me re-live my memories.  To be honest friends, i'm not entirely convinced it's the MMOs that need to change.  Like the generation that wanted something different and picked Nirvana to be the grunge new wave era.  Think about it, every decade or so we need to recycle what we currently have into what allows us to break out and connect with something unique.  EQ Next turning into EQ 1.5 would be an absolute splat in the pan.  Fry me up an egg sally!

EQ and WoW are like Superman and Batman movies... You can't help but pay to see their remakes because you're hoping for another Michael Keaton or another Christopher Reeve.  Does that mean we are a generation of hit it and quit it gamers???  I think technology is going in that direction.  We don't have to wait for our loot, we can just grab a game that will give us purples by walking into a PvP training area.

We're spoiled, we're saturated and the fact of the matter is, there will never be another michael keaton or christopher reeve.  Maybe batman isn't the vehicle that we're all really looking for or need...  Not saying that Superman N64 is what we deserve for our inability to separate from the past... but...

In the end, people, all you people that play for hours days and childhood memories are the best reason that makes even the worst game successful.  If in 2000 someone asked me to play EQ because no one else was, I would still be playing Major Mud.

SOE did a bastardized version of a Classic server twice  in 2006 and 2011

I was there for both server launches and it was very similar to "the old days" for the first 2 months (minus corpse runs)

In all honesty, do you really want EQ1 or do you want to relive your memories of the fun times?  I could be way off, and if i'm making that assumption I do apologize.

I dont think we have to go back to the old ways but i would like to see better forms of "Risk vs Reward"

I miss the Trains and Gear recovery (post death)  of EQ1 and I'm hoping those mechanics return someday

I don't think any of us are looking for clones of WoW and EQ.

I think a lot of people are sick of candy games that are too easy....Thats all we had been getting for the past few years. Add in F2P and cash shops. I don't think it has anything to do with rose colored glasses or nostalgia !....I'm playing on a perfect copy of a WoW private server and love it, but I would drop it in a second if we would get one good non candy mmo.  But all we get are crap 30 day fun fun games.

I do have to say FF14 RR looks good for the end of August, and will have to see on Wildstar, no release date, no payment model and just a lot of secrets and un knowns.

Uhm.. their movies are horrible?  When a Christopher Reeve movie is shown then I actually stick to it for a few minutes because of the hilarious story and acting on a level where you could replace the people with dolls and no one would even notice.

Having said so I never played EQ and have no interest in EQN. As usual it will all just be hype without much to back it up.

It's not so much rose colored glasses as the challenge we all want.
Why do you think eve has lasted almost 10years as a p2p game?
Why do you think Eq has lasted 10years?
Why has uo lasted over 10years?

Why is it that almost every game made in the last 5years has gone free to play, or failed?
Why has ftp risen as a pricing structure?

Simple, games are made terribly nowdays, every one holds no challenge, get max level in days, quest hubs, quest markers, HAND HOLDING.
    NO CHALLENGE

People pay for excitement and challenges, not a handholding Easy mode play a game and be done in a month.
    Edit:
When I say terrible it has nothing to do with graphics, but the underlining structures within the game.

Yeah this made me laugh. Also, for that analogy wouldn't Adam West be a little more fitting anyway? He was kind of the original movie and TV Batman, and unlike the other movies you're citing, his work was meant to be silly. No one pulls out exploding shark spray unless they know someone else is going to laugh.

Moving further onto the topic on hand, I don't care much for older MMOs I played, I don't see why this topic always comes back in the forums. Some people say that this is killing the industry, some people that it is Free-to-play, some say it's PVE-centric MMOs, etc. All I can really claim is that the industry doesn't really look that dead, and maybe I'm not always satisfied with the releases, but I know more are on the horizon. When we get back to a time where there are only choices like EQ or UO and nothing else, then maybe this question could be more legitimately answered. Until then, it's just how you view the industry, supposedly that they are Christopher Reeve and Michael Keaton...

What the heck you talking about. Keaton Batman was the best batman movie since the Dark Knight series of movies! And that shit was old and done with lesser tech than Dark Knight had.

on topic, MMO inflation. Also I doubt the classic EQ model would do well now days.

I'm not sure if someone's spoiled, but many of us are acutely aware of the possibilities of development at the moment, and we recognize that many recent products are not it and have regressed.

    Favorite MMO: Vanilla WoW
    Currently playing: GW2, EVE
    Excited for: Wildstar, maybe?
