I don't understand why so many people talk about Horizons like it's going to be the next big thing.
I think people are just going buck nuts because they said dragon will be a playable race.
Doesn't matter if a game has 50 different playable races if the game sucks. What does this game have, besides playable dragons, that some other mmorpg doesn't already have? I didn't see anything, and the graphics are sub par.

Well besides dragons Horizons also has the inclusion of a subjugated race which you must free before you will be able to use them as a playable character.  There is tons of information on the site at isteria.com, perhaps you should check it out and find out the answers for yourself.

BTW - the graphics look pretty good to me.

  • nalanala Member Posts: 173

I agree...the graphics are not sub par...and who cares if people are going 'buck nuts' over a playable dragon...thats HUGE and never been done before. I also think though that they have some pretty revolutionary crafting abilites with the schoole system that allows you to CHANGE schools- which ahem can't be done in other MMO's

So for me...yeah..its revolutionary because that means...new and they are several new features to Horizons.

Why don't you do some research before you make a post like this.  I tend to think it will be revolutionary, however you do not ever know till its public.  Having said that, there is more than enough info out there to know that it has more than any current online game.  Now the question is how well it will be implemented.

Yeah, right, real great graphics, that is, if you've been playing meridian 59 for the past few years

  • If they can introduce the big battles like they claimed before then this game will definetly be the game for me.  Ive been waiting for a game that can actually make it seem like your in a war and this war vs the undead might just do it.

Play Lineage2.  That game will have real time epic battles.  Castles vs Castles.  Dragons Riders vs Dragon Riders. Wyversn vs Wyverns.  All sorts of stuff.  I believe this game is completely PvP.  Badass right there image

Besides the fact that the elves look like porn stars... the games graphics are one huge step into "Perfect"

I agree that the graphics are totally great...the only thing I didn't like about it, was that other than a few quests and lvling, there was nothing to it.  I know there is going to be alot of PVP but that will be it.  There is no crafting unless your a dwarf.

I tend to agree that the game will do well just like lin 1.  But you will have to either love hard core PVP or love the lvling tredmill.

    IMHO

Why don't you point out something specifically that you think will make this game revolutionary? And don't say something like 'changing schools', big whoop. They have dragons as a playable race, ok, it still has to work, it still has to be balanced, it could easily be badly implemented. I've looked at the horizons site and I don't see any features that haven't been done before or even make me excited about the game. What do they hoot about? Economy, customizable shops and homestead, it's all been done, trade classes done, crafting done. Battle undead? So what, every game has undead, personally I'm sick of killing zombies.

  • Granted nothing is completly revolutionary.  I am just hoping that they take the other mmorpgs weaknesses and improve upon them.  It is rare that devs try to implement new revolutionary ideas due to publishers not agreeing with thier views.  My only wish is that the devs of AE will learn from the others mistakes and take advantage of what works to make the game fun.

  • MeltdownMeltdown Member UncommonPosts: 1,183

Really, not many games come out with something TRUELY revolutionary. But then they don't have to to be a great game. I'm sure all these games have parts taken from those great text based adventures or whatnot so you can say anything isnt revolutionary. But after looking at the website I think it will be worth my time checking out Horizons.

Revolutionary is in the eye of the beholder... every game is different... thats what attracts me to newer games. The thrill of exploring something on your own which makes MMORPGs so addicting, the lack of straight game play, and total freedom.

Again, the subjugated race is a feature that I think will add a new wrinkle to the game.  You listed some of the other features that I'm personally looking forward to.  It is not a completely new gaming idea, but it is a very welcome change from the cookie cutter mmorpgs that are coming out at an ever increasing pace.  Horizons will give you the most unique gaming experience of the current crop of games.

And of course, it all depends on implementation.

  • nalanala Member Posts: 173
I definately think there will be great battles...the whole story line is behind that. Then you have to think, if you have looked at any Horizons info, that the guy in charge- David Bowman, was behind Asheron's Call, which had amazing in game events, so I am expecting more and better for Horizons.

Misconception about Lineage2 dragons.  If you think you will actually get to have one in wyvern form... think again.  It takes a great deal of powergaming to get one and even then you have to be the guild leader of a lvl 4-5 pledge that owns a castle(only a couple of them exist) to advance your stryder to a wyvern.  Seems you need to be the elite of the elites to even have a chance of getting one(think becoming jedi in swg but a lot harder).

But, I do believe stryders will be more available(still requires a lot of work, lvl 3 pledge) and are pretty cool themselves.

As the game stands right now... it kinda feels like AC2 did with none of the sieging stuff being revealed so all we got are PvE vs some bland mops(mobs) and some minor PvP with terrible penalties.

Also the leveling treadmill and money accumulatioon being built for korean powergamers is terrible indeed.  Think killing(genociding might be a better term) mops over and over again for a long time ala EQ just to gain 1 level combined with Shadowbane farming(killing lots and lots of low lvl stuff to get cash).  This is only around lvl 20 too.  Also group xp is often not as rewarding as soloing stuff yourself.  The group xp bonus is on the light side.

Am I disappointed by it? In a way yes... but everything hinges on the sieging part of the game which has yet to be revealed in full.  Also, this game is probably the best looking mmorpg atm with great sound/music and special effects.

I get the same impression from lin2. I got an orc to 17 and the leveling treadmill got a bit too tedious for me. I had the same thought at one time, that the game is clearly made for hardcore players. They offer full PK, but the penalities for doing it are rediculous, (basically the town guards kill you on site and you NEED to have access to the towns as its the only place to upgrade your skills and get new equipment, as the mobs rarely drop). I was psyched about the game for the first few levels, the graphics are great, the spells are stunning, and it runs nice at high resolution, the animations and such for the different races are handled very well. I even appreciated the fact that it was a bit difficult to get that next set of armor or next level, because a game can be too easy as well, but I can only kill the same mob for so many times before I'm bored out of my skull. A game can only get so far on looks...

Hi, sorry it took me so long to answer...I had to find what the info was that I wanted.

    Quote from http://hz.warcry.com/index.php/content/library/developer_diaries/horizons_-_volume_III.php

We have made a commitment to ensure that tradespeople are able to focus on trade skills exclusively and still be able to take part in the elder game of Horizons. To that end, it will be possible for them to make a staple of their items without ever having to pick up a weapon in order to get the resources necessary for it. Continuing with weapon metal as an example, what this means is that there will be various metal veins in the world that will offer the ore required to make weapons via "Weaponcraft." Tradespeople simply need to locate them in order to gather the resources they need.

    end quote

I have never seen a game where you could be just a trades person.

  • This just came to mind, ever play a mmorpg where you actually get to build world structures such as bridges across body of waters?  Houses actually having to be built by players?  The tradeskill part of this game should excel better than any mmorpg out their.  If that isn't your cup of tea, what about invasions?  Darkness falls had this (which was a mud where NPCs would attack just like they are planning to do in horizons), and though i thought Daoc Would have that as well since it was made by the same company it didn't so hopefully Horizons will be the next generation mmorpg i and many others have been waiting for.

  • nalanala Member Posts: 173

You just hit on another aspect of the game that I think is amazing..that yes..the world and its players will have to unite to build these transportation devices such as a bridge in order to even find outher ares of the world...the dependancy upon community and tradeskills in this game is huge..and I think that will make it amazing...

and I am sorry to whoever thinks that being able to switch schools is not amazing..but the fact that i don't have to start a new character if i want to go and dabble and be a mage is VERY enticing...

Those screenshots are not a good view of horizons .Go check out the infight ones.

The graphics are nearly as good as AC2  and atm AC2 is the best fantasy mmrpg .SWG might have better graphics but only slightly.

No matter what its graphics will be amongst the top 3 when it comes out and hats off to them since this game has been in make since 1999.

They took time to redo the whole graphics engine which is exactly what shadowbane should have done then leak a bullshit story about the low graphics helping out in large PvP(I point to planetside for prove this is total bull crap).

Also like someone pointed out there is going to be a lot of dependency on player made items and yes even bridges.

I was skeptical if this would work but one thing my time in SWG shows is a total player based economy can work and is fun.

Now horizons seems to be taking it one step further which is very good.

  • "The graphics are nearly as good as AC2  and atm AC2 is the best fantasy mmrpg "

OMG i hope u mean they have good graphics instead of AC2 is the best mmorpg out.  Cause that is definetly a false statement.

However if u think bout it AC2 might have the best graphics but it also is a very bad gameplay experience.  So whats better good gameplay or eye candy?

    In reply to Kentaro-

Well you have to keep in mind that this is a beta for Korean users at the moment, and most Korean gamers powerlevel day and night. When the game is developed for foreign use, then we can perhaps suggest that the game be less focused upon mindless hack n slash and more on "story" and quests. However, it is very difficult to organize a really fun quest in such a large online game, and most people will want to powerlevel anyway a la Diablo 2.

Also bit about the dragons- well they're fierce and powerful creatures aren't they? Surely you would not want a level 15 character riding around on a ferocious dragon? That takes away from the appeal of owning a dragon; I believe that having dragons reserved for only those qualified, who work hard on this game is best. That way you can relish that moment when you get a dragon. You think to yourself "wow... I've accomplished my life goal of getting a dragon in Lineage 2.." image

As most other MMORPGs, levelling in Lineage 2 is somewhat tedious in the lower levels, but once a character is higher levelled and with great eq, it's pretty fun. Personally, I like powerlevelling, and if I wanted to play a game that focused on quests or storyline, I would play single player rpgs (Magna Carta, BG, ps2 games..). Well I'm sure that they will be adding more content, and the much-anticipated sieging, so there is quite alot more to look forward too.

this game will b the best yet! no game yet (that i know of)has as much community-based gameplay as this one. everyone works together to do cool things like build bridges and cities. i really think there will be epic war-like battles when a whole horde of undead comes and attacks a city. you will even be able to fend off attacks to your own structures. it'll give a kind of "real life" sense because when you are off hunting or doing whatever you still have to worry about your property.the customizability of weapons and armors is unheard of in any other mmorpg to date. 675 million different sword combos alone! this game is really something special. i think we all should get it untill WoW comes out.

I don't think I want to say any more about this game...too many topics are appearing outta nowhere just to have the same people say the same things.  I'll just say I'm excited *wirl a hand in the air, do a little jig, sit down* and call it quits.  This game looks cool, and definately a new experience.  Plus the graphics don't look awful.  They don't need to be STATE OF THE ART to make it a good game.  They look great to me anyway.  Better than other MMORPGs out there now.  So quit bitching about the graphics, they don't make the game.
