Thoughts on the Quakecon 2013 gameplay footage?

Looked good to me.  Combat was pretty hectic from my viewpoint.  What did you think about what you saw?

Cheers!

I didn't really like it tbh. They've done their best to make it 'look' like an ES game but really it's just like every other MMO, especially in the dungeon.. kill trash, kill boss, get loot, kill more trash, kill another boss, get more loot.

    No adventure...

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Can't put my finger on it but something felt off. It may have been how much he spammed the same thing over and over that got to me, not quite sure. Something just seems off about it.

I wasn't feeling it ... something seems missing or off. I actually fell asleep during some parts of the dungeon run. The audience was dead silent and reaction was pretty weak to most of the "cooler" things.

Not sold on the game yet.

I thought it looked pretty good. First person view is pretty solid for an mmo. Also with the minimal UI it definitely has the Elder Scrolls feel to it.

Combat needs work and there was 0 impact in it.

Felt like multi-player ES to me. I think that was the goal.

As for the length of the demo I did want to see more gameplay but it was obvious they were following a well rehearsed script and weren't deviating from it.

The combat seemed more flexible and natural than traditional MMOs. You can stay focused on the action, not the UI. There is just enough UI but not too much.

    I like it.

Basically this just wasn't feeling it

My main criticism from the start still stands; horrible character animations, i've seen indi game do a better job. If you want a quality feel to your game that is where you start, i for one is not interesting in looking at my char running around with a full diaper, and don't even get be started on the combat animations omg.

i don't know. they really didn't show anything unique to Eso, was very much the basics of all game mechanics.

i also hate scripted shows like this, why not grab a random group of ppl out of the audencie and say start playing. let them run wild and see if the game can diliver a random adventure

but i really wasn't expecting anything ground breaking or new just normal elderscrolls/skyrim with a large group of freinds. Didn't see any skill changing on the fly to suite the situation, or just to use something else flashy.

should of showed world exploring not a dungeon.

    Seriously not impressed.

Its a Shooter with ES elements.

Where was the adventure part? Sure it may be there, then why wasnt that presented?

And the combat was not amazing. It honestly looked like Guild Wars 2 with crappier animations.

  • DenambrenDenambren Member UncommonPosts: 399

Issues with the presentation we saw:

    1) No motion capture used for the animations

    2) All animations are scripted (no physics or dynamic positioning for legs on different terrain)

    3) Animations are far too quick to execute (like getting off horse)

    4) Animations have very few frames of animation (shooting the bow is a great example)

    5) First person perspective was wrong in some way - in melee it seemed like enemies were much shorter than where the camera would have been for the PC's head POV

    6) No visible reaction/animation from enemies being hit by melee or ranged attacks. The only reaction is when they die and execute their scripted death animation.

I think those are six facts that make the game look rather dated, from the current presentation. Especially when you consider how Skyrim is graphically leaps and bounds more advanced than what we saw.

    • Horrible outdated graphics and character animations.
    • Felt more like a co-op multiplayer than an MMO.
    • Focusing on consoles...
    • Just 5+1 skills in the action bar...
    • Combat looked interesting at the start...
    • Just another themepark on the list to skip, the first TES game im going to skip, it just looked horrible :(

But really, where did the rumored $200+ million budget money go? If i wouldn't have seen the TESO name in the title, i would have said that it's an indie game!

In the video trailers, like the 5 minute CG eye candy fest before the presentation, that is where a good chunk went.

Frankly, they should have just made a movie based on that; I'd be more apt to spend money on that, then what was presented so far.

I had mixed feelings when I saw the footage. The world looked great, and the mobs moved pretty good. The skills UI could use a bit of work but I think I will get the hang of it.

The combat with the bow didnt feel right to me. Somehow too quick. Overal combat wasnt bad, nice paced action and nice to see the switch between 1st person and 3rd person.

Defo needs some polishing to do.

You know when you play too much MMO's when your partners pants have become a rare drop.

    So its basically like TES?

I dunno maybe you just really want to hate the game but what you bemoaned here is basically the objective of every RPG both mmo and single player.  How would you know what "adventure" is motivating you based on some combat footage?

People never played TES for good combat, solid animations...they play it for the open world and the story, as well as looting/stealing/shaping the story with actions.

Not sure if ESO will retain this or not.

Every good mmo has people crying about bad combat and poor animations...its really what you use when you got nothing else to go on...and no one has anything else to go on so I understand.

    The loot was lvl 10ish?

How many skills did you use during the lvl 10 WOW-instances?

It's seemed to me for a while that they've been coasting on the concept of a multiplayer Elder Scrolls Game.

    1. Elder Scrolls Online - Fuck Yeah!

    2. ???

Losing my excitement for this game after seeing the gameplay footage. Sigh. Was hoping that this game would be awesome. Guess EQ next deserves the hype.

LOTS of brown and grey colours.

Combat seemed very chaotic and a bit non-responsive. Like hacking into the air.

Also the view distance was just SO disappointing.

This was my feelings exactly. Especially after I saw the hotbar skills at the bottom, I tried to find something to distinguish it from any other MMO and I came up blank. I think even their effort to make it look like Elder Scrolls missed the mark. I wasn't all that excited for the game in the first place, but I STILL ended up disappointed with not much interest or care. lol

I was impressed.  Combat seemed slower and more strategic than GW2 (which I'm comparing it too).  Even though it's not a cut and dried Trinity game, combat didn't look like  a clusterf**k (also a problem in GW2).  1st person looked great.  NPCs, both voiced non-combatants, and the dungeon monsters looked like fully fleshed out characters.

If all this can is also operative in AvA, with responsive, non-lagging engine, moving over from GW2 will be a no-brainer.  (I also like how combos have to be activated manually, instead of just happening like in GW2).

Only real negatives.  3rd person doesn't look as good as 1st person and is still a little clunky.  Player character models could be a bit more detailed.
