They're never going to shut down Landmark. They're going to use it as a content farm for EQN. That's my guess.
Yes, they'll keep it around to exploit people the way Blizzard exploited the UI modders in WoW. Though, I'd like for SoE to at least give a nod or credit content to the people who designed it instead of just stealing the work like Blizzard did, at least.
Nod, credit, and CASH, maybe?
Smokejumper DID specifically allude to selling player-designed structures through Player Studio'... so I think there will be some I kind of housing/construction.
Doubt we'll be building in the open world, but I kinda EXPECT that we'll be able to build in dedicated housing areas (ala Vanguard perhaps).

Yes, indeed. They will credit the creation/model with your name like in EQ2, then they will sell it on their marketplace for cash. You won't be getting the cash, I'm sure
I am starting to worry we won't be building in EQNext at all, only in Landmark, that's the disturbing impression I'm starting to get. It's starting to sound that way the more I think about it(hope I'm wrong). Which could mean prestige houses like in EQ2, where it's all just instanced. You would buy a house off the marketplace and get a portal instance to it or something.
Which I think would be a shame if players have no real sandbox impact on the world aside from the destruction and public events(rallying cries). But, that's what I'm sort of expecting.

nope. It's obviously a theme park.
Sandbox was just the camouflage word for "let players go create art assets for us to save time and money" in a separate client.
Ok...how is it a themepark? I must have missed that part. Massive open world with procedurally generated content to discover. A destructible, buildable world. The word instance wasn't used once. They didn't even talk about getting loot.
If this is a themepark, what are the rides? Really. I want to know what you consider to be the rides in EQ Next based on what we saw. I think the truth is you were going to call it a Themepark no matter what they showed us.
Just like how GW2 was supposed to be generated content waiting to be discovered?
I'm kind of having doubts what they mean about this Landmark thing too. Obviously you can do all that building in Landmark, and some stuff can make it into EQNext as game assets.
But, as to whether or not we'll be able to actually build houses and cities in EQNext, I'm feeling doubtful. It sounds like city building and all that could be tied up with the public events and just mass public participation. They haven't explained things well at all.
Definitely need to hear more definitive explanations.
I agree at the SOE live presentation they haven't explained it well. But a a dev is quoted in saying you will be able to "earn" land in the Everquest Next and build your house or castle on it. You may be able to pull some of your stuff from EQ Landmark if it is oked by SOE and deemed cohesive with the land of Norrath.

Not sure where the confusion is here. I guess they haven't clarified, but it sounds like the things designed in landmark will be built by players in EQ Next. Maybe as some sort of blueprints? Who knows.

I could live with that.
Yeah I am hoping this is the case, I am actually happier with it this way than allowing people to just directly terraform the gameworld without any moderation, I really support the moderation of content to ensure it fits with the architecture/general gist of the area you are building I think its a great idea and it will keep the world cohesive rather than someone trying to build a deathstar shaped castle.
My hope is that Landmark will be used not only for terraforming but also to build more intricate stuff like decorations and other little things, I think its a great idea, the way I would envision this would be:
Lets say you want to build a table decoration object you want to see in EQN, you go out in landmark and collect the materials ( which are matched 1:1 from landmark to EQN ) you put the materials in whatever form they are needed, if you are doing a wooden table then you go and get some wood treat it in whatever manner and shape it into a table.
Now this is the part that can potentially become very interesting for crafters, the template isnt translated into EQN directly into an object you can just place, but instead into a schematic/recipe with the required materials in the correct format that you used to shape the table in Landmark, so now a crafter can pickup the recipe collect wood, treat into polished wooden planks ( or whatever ) and craft the exact same table from the template.

Dude I know all that. Go back and read the question I'm actually asking.
Two seperate games for now, though they never said they won't allow people to directly load from one to the other later down the road like an instance.
YES. I. KNOW. THAT.
I am asking: WILL THE SECOND GAME BE A SANDBOX?
Seriously, am I not expressing myself clearly enough? Can anyone help me express the question in simpler words maybe?
To put it simple for you. EQN will be a sandbox.
Look like it that way. Have you ever played Minecraft?
Well Everquest Next Landmark is like the creative Server in Minecraft. You just build stuff up. But there is not a lot of world going on. But the developers can take assets from player creations of Landmark and put it into EQN. Also it is somewhat of a pre development tool to look what can work and what not. With questions like:
- how much do i let destroy.
- how fast let i do things destroy
- how do i balance different things concerning destruction. (because destruction is basicly pvp. you have to have mechanismn in place that it works. And i personally don't think of make everything invulnerable)
But in EQN you will also be able to build stuff, be able to destroy stuff all that fuzz. But you will also have wandering mobs, well actually a world full of adventure and explorable stuff. But you can toy as much as with it as you can do with Landmark.. with the difference that landmark is empty.
In in my humble opinion it is a good move from SoE. They are not ready with building up all the world of EQN. But all the tools are already finished, and they give us now those tools to tinker with them around. And to test on us, how to balance different things in the final game. And we can get familar with the kind of world in landmark, before we enter the real filled up world EQN.
Hope that they do not limit EQN housing to and instance, would love to see it more like SWG.
Yes, me too.
They really never said anything like that.
Again Think about minecraft. Creative server and survival server. You can build in both everything you want. But in the survival server you have inhabitants and adventures all over the place. EQN is not ready yet. But all the tools are ready.. so they give us now(or at least this year) Everquest Next Landmark (the Tools), where we can play around until EQN is ready.

Mate you are just too awesome in this post. perfectly phrased the exact situation. an attempt to make players create content for developers while paying the developers instead of getting paid.
Boobs are LIFE, Boobs are LOVE, Boobs are JUSTICE, Boobs are mankind's HOPES and DREAMS. People who complain about boobs have lost their humanity.

This is not a sandbox, sorry. EvE is a sandbox.
And where exactly did they said this? Quote pls. They did not said anything like that. Landmark is Minecraft creative. EQN is minecraft survival server. Thats the difference.
In that dynamic event thing example. (how did they called it?) They have even placed a example of that.. players building up stuff. Small camp -> fortress.

One thing for sure is that Wurm Online whips it when it comes to terraforming, EQNL is not even in the same ball park.
I can't understand how one can mentally fumble like this; EQ Landmark is a mincraft-like pre-game to help SOE speed up development of EQN and engage the players in the design of the world (to make the wait for the game milder, among other reasons).
EQNext will sport THE EXACT SAME creation mechanisms regulated for use in the MMO (meaning some things, although doable might not be allowed to retain a minimum gameplay experience for everybody).

I bet you are wrong,
They won't let you build directly in the EQN game world. Never, ever.
Why?
If you want to build, you need to own territory, if everything is supposed to be destructible, then so is the player created stuff.
All of that implies player conflict, but they didn't talk about player conflict or even player economy AT ALL.
But they created a completely seperate mincraft like building app to get art assets for free (if approved) and keep the creativity off the main game EQN.
Also the final straw was "the world heals back", well so much for terrain destruction.
Smart, interesting concepts, but not a sandbox MMO.

You can own land in EQN to build house (getting land is hard too) and the house editor is what Landmark has. This have already been confirm by dev. They even said that Landmark is like the practice tool for EQN when it comes to building.
The world heals back, because of griefers. Please if you know another way to stop a bunch of morons from destroying the entire game world in a week send a twitter/email to SOE ASAP. And not everything heals, Rallying Calls bring permanent changes.

Players will have housing in EQN, and players will participate in building cities that change the landscape and that can be fought over. Players cannot grief the landscape anymore than they can grief the landscape in Eve. Can players cause stars to go nova in Eve or destroy planets in Eve? They can mine asteroids and build cities that can be fought over.
This is information gleaned from the first day and EQN is already comparable to Eve in the areas of world modification and grief restrictions. I have no idea how long SOE Live lasts, but there are plenty of things left to find out about.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
