how do you come up with this argument?

"look bad in a few years" when compared with what? new MMO's? most have been stylized and same ol same ol anyways to even compare.

the graphics are acceptable, the art style is awful out of the gate.

If they made them realistic 2 things would happen .

    1.  Oh noes they made a Secret World clone

    2. Five years from now we would be saying how outdated the characters look . Mickey mouse is ageless right .

That being said the Kerran looks stupid lol . But hey no one is forced to play that race .

This just in.... art is subjective!

    The character models are beautiful.

The issue isn't with the graphics level or that it's stylized.

The issue is that they're applying the style in a really lopsided way (oversized stuff and overly cute).

    Favorite MMO: Vanilla WoW

    Excited for: Wildstar, maybe?

I quite liked them. The human female reminded me of Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite

Yes, I suspect that too. My only hope is that there are many options during the character creation, and that you can come up with something better if you play around with the sliders.

However I don't know where this mass market audience is that likes this stuff. Who are those people?

I guess I can somehow live with the models if the rest of the game does what it says.

I loved the models, they must like keep them.  Great job SOE!

Don't see a problem with them. Screenshots of them sort of reminded me of Bioshock Infinite's character models. Don't really have an argument on it as it's all personal preference.

Before now the cards where not over the tables..and people overhiped..now that they beguin to show there hand..well..they just have to justify the hype.

The caracters are bad (now we have the..but otherwise in years they wwould be outdated yada yada)

its not a sandbox (but..but..we have the world boulder to make content for them..err i mean..to expand our inner creators)

its not like eq1 or eq2 (but but..they said it wont be)

sorry folks..Smed played with you again..ever though some of us told you to hold your breath..count till 100 and relax a bit..but noooo....you hear sandbox and hardcore and sudenly cant control your corporal fluids..

They still don't really fit the EQ IP. If this is the general theme of how people look in the game then we wont really feel like we are in Norrath....

Game art needs more than look good, it also needs to fit the game since it's sets the mode of the entire game (together with music and story). It is important to get it just right.

Then again, I would want to see some more models, for all I know the 2 models I seen could just be a human and Kerran noble which kinda are supposed to look a lot less gritty than 2 outlaws.

But I am not really happy so far, I think the art should be closer to the original EQ.

    /signed.

Textures good.  Armor and weapon proportions bad.

I hated the character models, but that won't ruin it for me. (other things might)

I did like the way the sketches looked for the other races, and I liked that it sounded like you'll have quite a bit of freedom to design your outfits. I hope that they give us some options so that we can create a unique look with these crappy looking cartoon characters.

Nicely said sir.  WoW's character models fit the warcraft universe, which is why I never minded them when I played WoW.  EQ1 & EQ2 character models fit the Everquest universe, even with all the clunky animation and outdated engine, people playing those games know they're playing Everquest.  Warhammer Online's characters, while also a bit cartoony, fit the warhammer universe.  Guild Wars 2 characters fit Guild Wars IP.

I think most can agree that these character models don't fit the Everquest universe.  It's sad because Everquest is one of the oldest IPs out there in the MMORPG genre.  Personally they look like disney models, as if SOE hired disney artists to draw them up.  I mean I'm fine with them being creative with how npc/mob models look.  But player characters are personal.

I would like to see more character models, but so far I think they look like an 80's cartoon.  I expected characters that looked more realistic then EQ2.  The environments look great but I have to agree the characters don't look like they belong in the same environment.

I don't get it. This is what people have been going off about for months now? Really? That cat thing resembled a tauren from wow in its combat stance. Artwork is very bad, very very bad. I know its early but combat animations are terrible as well. Nothing from that video is even worth playing for me, yes its just my opinion but I think I'll just have to stay away from this thing until they decide to upgrade from 9 year old graphics and animations.

I agree, get rid of these character models, the human woman isn't bad if it has to be this cartooney style (wish it was otherwise as I'm sick-to-DEATH of WoW-ified "style"), but the kerran... and the kerran's armor! Oh please! No more of this kind of over-sized ridiculous armor...

  • NodboNNodboN Member UncommonPosts: 50

all i know is i want blood, maybe loss of limbs.

and broken armor. or at least scroched from fire or dirty as you play

i can handle the art style. but i want mature hardcore stuff to balance it out

At first I thought the female looked bad but then after I saw the facial animations I thought it was pretty cool actually . The lion king doesn't appeal to me at all but that's subjective .

Yes you are right about the sandbox part .  We get a creation tool but it appears to be only to help create the game world objects.

The game seems confused , it wants to be sandbox but it also wants to be themepark.

The graphics look like they were designed by someone with a 16 bit video card.Flat...childish...lacking detail, in color ,texture ,or shape.

The character movement when fighting reminded me of dime a dozen asian mmog.(all we didn't get was "slam" "pow","boom", "oof"  attached to the characters fighting actions.

The good news for me...I understand what this product is, and is not,and I don't have to waste my time learning any more.

  • trouser03trouser03 Member UncommonPosts: 33
I like it! I kept an open mind not expecting anything too similar to the first 2 games. Remember this is not meant to replace either game. The female looked super cute to me, and the expressions were great. I see a lot of people making the Disney comparison .... well how well have those drawings held up over time? As for the Kerran, I believe he mentioned something along the lines of "this is more the Lion-looking Kerran" meaning there will likely be several different options. There is also a contrast between the models and the world. Some say the models look out of place but I find it visually interesting and the characters pop of the screen.

I couldn't disagree more with the OP..

I love the Characters and am so glad they put the hyper-reality aside..  EQ2 had the ugliest models of its time, fake and plastic.. If I want reality its right outside my door.. reality in these video games just looks creepy...

  • frizzlepicklefrizzlepickle Member Posts: 72

I don't like the art style, not because it's cartoony. But because of the preportions, they just look stupid. I want to look cool when I play a game, not like a toddler's toy knight.

Just thin the armor down, and I'm a happy sailor.

Keep in mind guys they made a big point about open development and they have a "round table" poll thing going on the website already. If we throw a big enough fit we might get what we want.

realism as been put aside for majority of MMO's...

realism doesnt mean EQ2 graphics either.
