So, as a longtime EQ1 vet, and mmorpg lover in general. I can say that the reveal was both exciting and extremely dissapointing to me. Many of the ideas, the emergent gameplay mechanics, the vertically divided world, with subterranean levels, etc, are all fantastic ideas.
The art style made me want to punch a [mod edit]wall. [mod edit] Firiona Vie with a bow? Massive shoulder pads of doom. Fuck. Me.
Outside of that, the game will probably do well, but i actually hope it fails because its the same bullshit stupid "horizontal" progression shit as fucking GW2.
Scaling "raids", lame as fuck.
Items that don't give stats? Why the fuck do i want to get them then?
I just have a strong feeling this game is going to go the way of GW2, people will play the fuck out of it for a couple months and then log in once a week if that. There is just way too much in this game that is "change for the sake of change"

I hear ya..
Its like they made this awesome looking hot fudge sundae, holding it in front of you in all its glory, making you salivate.
and then they squatted and took a big fat dump on it.
Im in the same boat as you.
GW2 does not currently have horizontal progression. One unlocks every ability on their character way before reaching the level cap. The only form of progression from that point on is the grind for higher stats, such as the miniscule stat gain offered from Ascended Gear.
However...

The part that starts with "Progression Advancement" talks about finally adding horizontal progression to GW2 later this year.
I think you just described SOE's mission statement.
They've been doing it for a decade unfortunately.

lets not forget those awesome traits that were so exciting to obtain!
Is true. By level 60 one will also have access to all the trait tiers. And unfortunately several traits are vastly superior to the rest pigeon-holing players into only a few viable builds for their profession of choice.
Hopefully that is going to change. I want to see horizontal progression again, and I want to see it done right.
Guess I'm in the minority on this site as far as liking what I saw.
Most of your assumptions are just that as they really haven't revealed much yet, but I get what you're saying.
Seems everyone hates big shoulder pads and with how much customizing we can do with gear (from the little they said) we should see zero shoulder pads in EQN. In WoW it wasn't even a choice, you had to get whatever tier the devs said you had. At least they are giving us a choice in EQN.
I really like the models myself. Sure they could look a little more mature, but I don't want a TESO clone. Comparing Wildstar to EQN and then to WoW, I don't feel EQN is all that similar or to Disney for that matter.
They were going for something new that will last the next decade at least, no matter what they chose it was going to turn some people off. EQ has always been a game for everyone, TESO/AOC and other bland color template games are for a specific crowd (you guys know who you are).
When I first saw EQ (while still playing MUDs) I thought it looked stupid. Once I fell off the lift in Kelethin, I never looked back.
Give me Iksar at launch and I'm good.
Here's you Iksar.
That is awesome, lmao.

Lmao, thanks My Iksar SK will be awesome
You're not the only one. People who just hate it are just going to complain and complain and complain. They are not going to change the artstyle, believe me. Beside aging better, voxel world destruction looks less ridiculous when using stylized art...
Also liked what I saw from the game. Its the most innovative game I have seen in the last 10 years. I liked the art style but did not like the happy faced characters that they showed. Would like to have seen darker looking characters.
Lets say you come across a pack of orcs and the scaling is set for a minimum of 10 people. Well, you better bring 2 groups.
Now in the past if you showed up with 5 groups you could just zerg it down and win. But now it upscales to 5 groups so you're still being challenged. Bring 10, bring 25, bring 100...still a challenge.
As long as the minimum requirement bar is set high enough, scaling could be awesome!
I hated the look of wow when I first saw it and decided to play eq2 instead.
I ended up playing wow for 4 years and looking at EQ2 now makes me laugh at how bad everything looks. Wow still doesn't look great but it has it's own style that aged much better.
In the end it came down to game play though. Wow was fun to play and EQ2 at launch was a terrible game. The same thing will go for EQN. If it's a good game it wont matter what the graphics look like. It's always going to have those people on forums who wont play it because of how it looks, but most people will just learn to accept it and enjoy the game.
oh come one people, stop the lame "it's aging better" argument for stylized cartoon graphics, SWTOR used the same lame argument and fact is, it just looked cheesy on release, today and will still be cheesy in 10 years.
e.g. Age of Conan isn't "stylized", it's looking great since 2008, got regular engine updates and still looks great today and will in 10 years.

That's how EQ should look like imho
I agree. No matter how much I and everyone else like EQ Next, horizontal progression is a failure. Its been bad in every game its appeared in, and I don't see a reason it won't continue to be.
Horizontal progression is not a progression system, its a lack of one.
Which is more a statement about the poor shape this genre is in rather than a real complement to this title.

First of all. We really do know almost nothing about progression in EQN.
Secondly. It is a sandbox. You can't have ridiculus amount of vertical progression in a sandbox. Because of the simple fact that you want, that all of your world is interesting all of the time. This doesn't work with a huge vertical progression system.
And finally.. i will bet almost any amount, that EQN will have some verticall progression. Just not an insane amount of it.. as i will say it repeatedly you can not have lvl1-5, 5-10 zones in a sandbox game. Your world would be wasted.
So i don't get what everyone expected.
About the art style. I personally never cared much about it. Because both can look rather good, or incredible bad. But i do understand why they have choosen the more stylized art. With this kind of destructable world, and voxel engine, your some constraints on world design, and a more stylized character fit easilier in such a world. And anohter reason is the better expression of emotes.. so that was another constraint. And i think in the long run better expressions are more important as the more realistic art style. (at least for me) And finally, polygon count. All that buzz will be rather heavy on cpu and gpu.. and you really want a lot of characters at any given spot.. so they just started to reduce polycount, whereever it is possible. And stylized characters are a lot favored, because they are not that polygon heavy. There is a reason why in Age of Conan every zone is limited to 100 players. You can't have all.. just because of technicall contraints. I can live with it.
But are those shoulder pads really necessary? Hmm.. no i don't think so. I am not a fan of them either. And don't forget, up to now we have just seen 2 characters and 2 dresses.. i really hope we will have a billion different dresses and unique customize options.. and so everyone can avoid "maybe" those shoulder pads of greater doom.
Thank you for echoing my sentiments. While EQN does have some positives, the negatives run rampant in this game. So much so that its not even worth my time to DL and check out for free. I wont be making an account so they can count me as an active player so they can run to their board members and brag about their lame ass game.
Completely agree...however...
The real innovation comes from the AI and the way the world is constructed (voxels). The problems I have with the game are the actual game play systems, such as, art style, action combat, character progression, etc. The GOOD news is the game play systems are NOT dependent on the game world and AI. So another company (or SOE if they would pull their heads out of their butts) could just copy the world creation system and then implement an art style and class/level/progression/combat system that many other players would want. THEN you have a Holy Grail game!
When the presenter was like "this is Firiona Vie by the way" and pointed to a generic cartoon character, nobody in the audience moved a muscle. Not even a courtesy foot shuffle.
They didn't even have actual models to show of the other races. It was just concept art for the elves and dark elves, which was the same cartoon crap.
The combat animations didn't help. Zing! Teleport! Smash!

Excuse my language but why the fuck would you make the game look like that when most eq1 and 2 fans are in there late 20s to 30s
EQOA had some cartoonlike look .It was played on PS 2.
We've seen one presentation so far. One.
A lot of the people that are making a lot of noise here have always made a lot of noise. Now, its just another topic with a whole lot of extra drama. While entertaining, they certainly are not a source of valued opinion for me. I'd suggest, if I may, that if you are interested in EQN then you formulate your own opinions rather than listening to the peanut gallery.
