Can you point to anything before Aug 2nd 12pm that lead you or others to think EQN would look/feel differently?
yes!!! Lord I wish I could find it..but there were realistic pictures released some 3 months ago?..maybe longer?..that showed "realistic" looking char faces.Ill find the picture I saved to my HD and upload it.
Only thing I can think of is the concept of the human with a red face. That was from 3 years ago I believe. But the concepts of ogre, orc, elves, etc from years back all match to what we have seen. Still haven't seen a clear picture of a male human in action or how much we can customize our look (assuming quite a bit), so maybe the red face guy isn't too far off the mark.
The graphics are fine for a Disney themed game, or cartoonish game, whatever you want to call it. I don't even mind playing those games.
But when you use the Everquest name, people expect you to honor the franchise.
Would you be ok if the third series in the Lord of the Rings was suddenly a cartoon? No you wouldn't, just like people who supported the franchise are disillusioned that it looks nothing like the franchise.
Excellent point! I think it is a huge slap in the face to loyal EQ fans. SOE seems to have a knack with pissing off loyal fans ala SWG. Remember that one ?
It's a slap in the face to give you what you want besides graphics.... Do you want a great sandbox or a shiny looking game with no soul?
I have no respect for gamers that are interested more in graphics than in game features. Unless the graphics look like they are from 1999 (aka EverQuest 1) then I see nothing to complain about.

I know right, they should of kept the same guy that did EQ/EQ2....oh wait.
I'm feeling more and more like I played some weird mutated version of EQ with all the haters and what they expected.
Since when is EQ or any mmorpg for that matter, a "serious" g
ame? Those skeletons that giggled sure made me feel like I was in a serious world...or the countless other sparkly silly looking things in EQ/EQ2.
Expecting a game version of Gladiator or Brave Heart is where many are falling on their faces.
nothing in EQ or EQ2 looks anywhere near as silly as EQN..
I can't believe the gritty, dark, realism in this pic. I feel like I'm almost in a real life movie! If you can't see this art being made into a Saturday morning cartoon, well there isn't any reason to discuss it further.
good for you,you pulled up a game with a graphics engine that was made in 1999...
/lose.
Huh?
"nothing in EQ or EQ2 looks anywhere near as silly as EQN.."
You said it, not me. Regardless of when EQ was made, it is what it is. If you and others can't see the connection between EQ and EQN, I'm sorry.
Many are going on and on how this isn't EQ, I disagree and that's how opinions go. Luckily my opinion is rewarded with EQN.
Reality is, this is what we have. Take it or leave it. No amount of complaining is going to change it drastically into TESO, Black Desert or whatever other style some were expecting that made no sense to begin with, especially after all that was presented for the last few years.

That's the funny part, we essentially already knew the possibility of it looking this way, many a thread on the subject came before this reveal.

EQN graphics are adorable, it's gonna be the cutest MMO out there no doubt about that. No thanks.
Oh! Almost forgot the super, mega, awesome facial expression emote BS. I know in EverQuest I&II players BEGGED for a way to emote with their faces, how funny their boob, fart, and penis jokes were! The years of waiting are over at last! Thank you SOE.
The graphics dont bother me.. Even alot of their ideas do not bother me and even some sound cool. What bothers me is how they are going with the GW2 combat system and no holy trinity. Thats what really bothers me and the fact that the game is nothing like EQ yet they use the EQ name..
i don't mind cartoony graphics, but eq next looks too disney/cartoony for me. everything about the game looks good, the character models on the other hand need to change. they should look a tad more realistic. i saw the elf, the human and the kerran and they are currently no good.
didn't smedley say that we would be able to change the direction they are going? if that is true, then it actually may happen.
I really don't know what the problem is. Why do people want ridiculously next-gen graphics in every new MMO. I actually think the graphics are beautiful. It looks like it came straight of Tangled (a Disney movie) and I really don't see a problem with that. People have been wanting a massive sandbox game for years and here we are finally getting one and people are only focused on... the graphics. The thing is they may not have been able to make a fully destructible environment if they were to make it overly realistic. I don't think people realize the amount of stress that would put on servers or the lag...
I'd prefer a beautiful looking Disney MMO any day then an uber realistic looking MMO that doesn't have the features that EverQuest Next is touting.
No, it is not about the quality of the graphics, it is also not about the graphics being stylized or any other feature in the game. The graphics look great overall and if SOE is able to deliver everything they say EQN actually is more or less the game I have been waiting for all the years and more.
There is only one thing this is all about, (well actually two) that human character and that kerran character. The girl actually looks like a Disney princess. Don't you see how out of place this is. Personally I don't like the art style of Tangled very much but that is not the problem. The problem are the associations I will have every time when I see that kind of character. I always think she will start singing any moment, that SOE want to show us "a whole new world" ant that this world is "shining, shimmering, splendid". I just can't get this out of my head. Disney and Everquest, they just don't belong together! And I think they must have done that on purpose. You can't nail that distinctive Disney style by accident.
And the Kerra, he actually is the worse of this infernal couple. And he doesn't even look like something from Tangled. And Its not the shoulders, those are bad too, but his face is far worse. Shouldn't he look menacing? He's a goddamn lion after all. But instead he has a goofy oversized nose and just looks stupid. They make him growl and roar but it just looks awkward. "Look at me, I'm a lion - drawn by Walt Disney, fear me." He reminds me of some sort football mascot, one of the kind that gets bombarded with empty cans every time it shows up. Just look at the Charrs from GW2 they actually look menacing. It can be done. And again, one does not design something like this by accident. I really thought he was playing it for laughs when Dave Georgeson showed the Kerra the first time, since the concept art he showed before looked kind of good. (Ok, the elves looked like they where drawn by a teenage anime fan.)
SOE told us the characters look like they do because they wanted articulated facial expressions for SOE-mote. (Which is a feature I really love by the way.) But I'm sure visual expressions can also be done without that kind of art style. Just look at the Sims 3, those characters have the most extreme facial expressions possible and they are very stylized, but they don't have that super cute Disney style to them.
Sorry, I just cant stop ranting about this. And don't call me a hater. I'm possibly the biggest fan of EQN, and therefore it bugs if there is something so blatantly wrong with a otherwise excellent game. And the character models are are an important feature, they are the one thing you will look at the most during the whole game.
I reckon Everquest Next's lovely new character and world art, together with the revolutionary new game design elements will probably rescue the Everquest franchise from being as obscure as it is. The current formulas in terms of gameplay and art didn't work, I think the new direction will. Please Sony keep the new Kerran - I loved the emotes on his face - perfect for a scoundrel.
If Sony can deliver on the everchanging world and on complex crafting, then Everquest Next will rescue me from the grind involved in leveling up over and over and rerunning quests.
Good luck and hang tough! Stick to these new graphics, they really work!
I have no problems with graphics that fit the game, artistically and technically. I never complained about WoW's graphics because their characters felt like they belong in the Warcraft universe, it fit their game well. And yes they do have probably the smoothest animation and combat available, which benefited them greatly. Same with Guild Wars 2, I didn't mind the more anime look of their characters because it fit the Guild Wars games, they've always been using that style of graphics. Same with Warhammer Online, their characters looked good because they also fit the Warhammer lore, and I liked the graphics.
My problem with EQN is that this graphical style does NOT fit the Everquest universe. I had wanted to play a cat character, almost had it set in my mind that I would roll one when EQN comes out. I had a Vah Shir bard in EQ1, and a Kerra monk in EQ2. But what did SOE do? They made the new Kerra look like disney's lion king! I'm still going to play the game, but this really upset me by how much they changed the characters.
If you liked what you saw from the demo videos, that's great, I'm glad. But chances are you didn't play EQ1 in the beginning and didn't play EQ2 either. SOE has a way of spitting in their loyal Everquest fanbase in the face by doing stupid things like this. As is right now, there's no way I'll ever roll a Kerra in EQN. I have no doubt by going with the disney character looks that the game may age better, and that it'll attract more younger audience. But this really just does not look Everquest, not in the slightest. All I can say is that the rest of the game better be DAMN good because they about killed it for me with their choice of character graphics. Graphics don't bother me as much, heck I still play Asheron's Call, and still go back to Everquest 1 from time to time. But my criteria is that the graphics need to fit the lore of the game, the history of the game. Right now SOE might as well just call this game "Next" and take Everquest out of it. I'd feel better about it really.
