Unlockable Classes??? Jedi??

DaranarDaranar Member UncommonPosts: 392

When I heard there are unlockable quests and that you can combine them, mix and match skills, 10,20,30,40, TONS of classes, etc....I about shit my pants.   Also my mind immediately went to SWG Pre-NGE!   Did SOE learn there lesson and revive many ideas behind SWG?   From the little crafting info available too, it looks like we will see an in depth crafting system that I loved so deeply in SWG.

More Specifically....Unlockable Classes?   It's like a ton of Jedi quests waiting to be unlocked!!   I can only hope just like the Jedi quest, it's not as simple as save a farmer from an orc raid and learn to be a wizard.   One can only hope its, save a farmer from an orc raid and begin a month long quest to unlock powerful wizard skills!   None the less I LOVE THIS IDEA!   It's actual reason to run around exploring other than stupid "achievements" or other gimics games use to make it 'look' like they encourage exploration.

But i know as true 'gamers', all you people want to do is bitch and moan till the cows come home, then bitch and moan some more.   I however am happy they actually listened to us 'minority' and are trying to give us a great sandbox VIRTUAL WORLD instead of some stupid game on rails to 'beat' in the first week.   In everything we can find room to complain, but we can (and should) look at the positive they are giving us players that we have been asking for for a while now.   This looks like the first and only game on the horizon in a long time that is actually looking to move the genre forward and not just milk it for some quick cash before dissolving into oblivion.   Thanks SOE for listening and for the round table, and I look forward to seeing you guys come through!

An example given of a difficult class to unlock required significant faction standing and accomplishing certain goals, before that faction will even offer training for that class.

And because certain classes are polar opposites of each other, if one wanted to collect and fully progress through all classes, it will require a significant time investment.

Yep... ~40 classes at launch with more to be added later.

From what I understand, the devs will have multiple methods of unlocking classes... though there might be some that are really elusive.  Some classes might unlock from simple book and scroll drops off of mobs... some from quests... some from unlocking combo's of other classes... etc.

It looks like there's a fairly elaborate system for building custom classes, that combines ability 'costs' along with gear bonuses to define the loadout.

If you build something effective, tho'... you get to name it.

I think learning their lesson might have been to look back at failed games and realize SWG failed even though it had about as large a built in Star War fan base as there ever will be in a game. It didn't fail post NGW, it just failed. NGW happened for a reason.

What that game had in common with this game is they took a great concept, fantastically creative ideas and features and then chose to go with dumbed down combat which pulled down all the good with the bad.

Well, classes get a whooping 4 abilities which are linked to your weapon. So it is just like TSW with quests to unlock the classes. It is really just going to be a face roll spam button fest like GW2. Unlock all the all the classes, have your guild tell you what abilities you have to have to make the raid team, and spam spam spam.

Combat will be a bunch of jumping beans and explosions with chaos as the leader, just like GW2, death will be meaningless, self heals and hand holding the norm.

8 abilities is too few, I could live with 12, but as a spell caster with 4 spells being cast over and over and over and over and over and over and over and even over again it gets too old too fast.

TSW was fun to solo but when you started raiding, you were forced to play certian builds becuase you only had 4 players and each one had to have certain ablities for each boss. Man that gets old fast.

Now maybe EQnext can pull something out of the hat but I think this 8 ability class system will bite them in the behind, maybe there will be enough other stuff in the game to make up for it.

You know it could be 8 with 2-3 different on the fly swappable hotbar sets right?  Basically its like having 2-3 hotbars stacked on each other with access up to 16-24 active skills during combat, only differences you have to swap between them with a button press instead of having one big block of hotbars in your HUD.

You clearly never played EQ1 lol.   You had 8 spells, IF you were a caster.  And you only used a couple of them in combat anyway, specially if you were a wiz or mage.   I love limited spell/ability slots, it makes you prepare for fights rather than having everything at your disposal.   I don't think having 8 active abilities at a time will ever kill a game lol, i mean there have been many successful games that didn't let you have every ability plastered all over your UI.   It's funny to me how this is a major issue for people in an RPG.

Well GW2 did this with their weapon swapping and its PC exclusive.  Final Fantasy XIV has normal keyboard and mouse controls and gamepad control totally separate but the gamepad controls can still use up to 32 skills in that game.  So dont blame the gamepad.

GW1 is also PC exclusive and limited to 8 active skills

even EQ1 was limited to 8 spell slots at release

EQ1 also had abilities but they were crap like beg and sense heading

The combat system is like GW2. You have 4 skills for whatever weapon you are using. These skills can be changed or enhanced depending on the crafted enhancement to the weapon.

Each class has multiple skills for damage, defense, utility etc. But you can only choose a certain amount depending on the class you are currently specced as.  For instance rogue/wizard get 2 damage slots, 1 defense and a utility. Some classes get 1 damage, 1 defense, 2 utility etc.

You go to your spellbook, find the skills you want to use and slot them into your bars.

Then comes your weapon and armor with further enhance your skills.  It is pretty straightforward but seems to have a lot of customisation.
