can classic servers actually work long term?

herculeshercules Member UncommonPosts: 4,925

I just got thinking about playing game X if only it was on a classic server like it was in 2000 or whatever year it was.

Then I realised i have done so 3 times and left!

UO - on a place i cannot mention on this site

EQ1- again somewhere i cannot mention on this site

AC2 - brought from dead by turbine

And in all 3 once the nostalgia feeling left i was gone in under 1-2 months.

You see for me its the fact that this games encouraged interaction and was more then about the mechanics of the game and since a lot of the people are not same i knew once i went past "oh wow ,i need to watch my step or corpse run " etc i felt that i would not want to actually play the game mechanics as it was then .

your thought?

I'll say yes but only judging from a game which brought up a 2007 version of itself. But the past is the past and you can't get back how good it used to be even if the exact same conditions was replicated.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

    ok

Assuming your over 20 and have driven cars lets use the analogy

Does driving an X-type Jag still feel awesome, yes, but does it offer the feel of safety and power that it did when it came out, No - Compare classic cars against their current day , upgraded compatriot and in my opinion you will have your answer

Once something has had its heyday / upgraded then it will never feel as good no matter how much nostalgia you have for the game/feel it will still give you that warm cuddly feeling but only for short term until you realise that it doesn't have the same excitement that it did when you were younger

This post is all my opinion, but I welcome debate on anything i have put, however, personal slander / name calling belongs in game where of course you're welcome to call me names im often found lounging about in EvE online.

Long term no.  Unless they start updating them again which well leads back to square one :P.

i think some people can play classic longterm but most wont

DAOC did classic servers in 2005

EQ1 did "progression" classic servers twice (2006 and 2011)

We all need new stuff to keep us interested in games. A EQ done as a classic server is old hat and we done it all before. But bring out a new EQ with the rule set and same mechanics but new graphics and new things to do I believe it would still get a huge surge as new MMOs do but I also believe due to players making a connection with there own toon they wouldn't leave in the droves after a month.
